Come to think of it this country has treated life far too cheaply. Poorly armored tanks. Poor supply chains resulting in half of all deaths from starvation and disease. Fighter planes built without ejection seats and finally, kamikaze and suicide attacks. That's why this time I'd take pride in a citizen led effort that sacrifices no lives at all! This next battle is not one waged to the death, but a battle to live for the future.
~ Kenji Noda's speech to his men on the day before Operation Wada Tsumi.

Dr. Kenji Noda (野田健二, Noda Kenji), often referred as "Doc", is the tritagonist of the 2023 kaiju drama film Godzilla Minus One. He's a former military naval scientist who, after the end of the war, joined the Shinseimaru minesweeper crew alongside Captain Seiji Akitsu and Shiro Mizushima.

After Godzilla returns years later, mutated into a gigantic monster and threatening to attack Japan, Kenji Noda joins a paramilitary task force and becomes the mastermind of a plan for killing the kaiju, dubbed "Operation Wada Tsumi".

He's portrayed by Hidetaka Yoshioka.

Personality[]

Kenji is a genius and kind scientist who aimed to set things right in the light of his past involvement as former military naval scientist, criticizing how Imperial Japan too focused on honor that one's well-being. As such, he vowed to do everything he could in avoiding such mistake during Operation Wada Tsumi. Coupled with his efforts in helping Koichi moving past his traumas, it shows how much he cares about everyone's well-being.

History[]

Background[]

Kenji used to partake in the development of weapons for the Imperial Japanese Navy over the course of World War II. At that time, he took notes on how much his employers' capabilities in taking the lives of others into account left much to be desired, from questionable aspects of weapons in question to tactics in war itself.

Godzilla Minus One[]

After the war, Kenji was assigned aboard Seiji Akitsu's minesweeper, Shinseimaru, alongside Shiro Mizushima and Koichi Shikishima. The were tasked with disposing of naval mines from such conflict.

Trivia[]

  • With Godzilla: Minus One can be interpreted as loose remake of original 1954 film, it can be inferred that Kenji is the equivalent to Daisuke Serizawa. Both even held important role in defeating Godzilla.
    • At the same tims however, Kenji contrasted Serizawa for following reasons:
      • He simply befriends Noriko Oishi (Emiko Yamane's equivalent) and roots for her to be with Koichi rather than in potential love triangle drama like between Serizawa, Emiko, and Hideo.
      • Kenji survives in the aftermath of the conflict against Godzilla while Daisuke Serizawa didn't.
      • He didn't develop Oxygen Destroyer nor similar weapon of mass destruction to kill Godzilla due to his country was too crippled to provide necessary fund and resources thus had to improvise with freon gas and balloons with which he and his allies subjected Godzilla in explosive decompression. Even if he had everything he needed, it's unlikely he would attempt to such a thing given to his disillusionment over Japanese government's mindset (disregard over life) at the time.
