~ Keyleth after she and Vox Machina defeat Brimscythe. |
Keyleth of the Air Ashari is one of the main protagonists of the adult animated fantasy series The Legend of Vox Machina, based on campaign one of the Dungeons & Dragons podcast web series Critical Role.
She is a member of Vox Machina and a half-elf druid who is currently undergoing her Aramenté, a quest which acts as the Ashari trial of leadership.
She is voiced by Marisha Ray.
Biography[]
Background[]
Keyleth was born in the village of Zephrah, and grew up in the Air Ashari. She learned how to shapeshift into animals at a young age. At one point, her mother left for the Aramente to become the headmaster. But since she did not return, that made Keyleth next in line. Because of this, she had to do copious amounts of training to prove herself worthy.
When she finally became a young adult, her father sent her away from her home and into the world to seek out the other elemental Ashari tribes and establish a connection between them. At some point on her travels, she met the other members of Vox Machina and they became a traveling party.
Season 1[]
Briarwoods arc[]
Keyleth participated in a drinking contest with her friends and lost only after one ale. After accidentally vomiting on one of the other patrons, this sparks a confrontation, which leads to a bar fight, much to Keyleth's dismay. The barkeep breaks up the fight and kicks Vox Machina out when they can't pay for damages.
Understanding the flaws almost everyone in the party has, she questions their compatibility together as a group. But when Scanlan comes finding a wanted poster to slay an unknown beast, she's willing to embark on another journey with them. They go to the council of Tal'dorei, who after some convincing, take Vox Machina to the area where a monster has been attacking. They pass through a humble village. Keyleth speaks with a tree for any leads into finding where the threat was. They eventually move on.
As they get further, they finally find the beast, revealing to be a blue dragon. The party members try their best against the creature, but nothing she or anyone else did could phase it. Keyleth has a brief panic attack in the middle of the battle before coming to her senses and casting a massive lightning bolt on the dragon, only to see it had no effect on the gigantic creature. Eventually, the dragon shoots his lightning breath at a mountain, causing rocks to fall down on Vox Machina before departing. Keyleth however, managed to save the party from being crushed by growing thick vines over everyone. The druid had another small panic attack about the fact that they almost died, but Pike assures Keyleth that she saved them. With the party deciding there was nothing they could do at this point, they decided to depart. They return to the village to see it had been destroyed by the dragon. Heart broken by their failure to save a village they had recently become familiar with, Keyleth and the rest of the party take it upon themselves to slay the dragon.
The party returns to Emon, informing Uriel that while they did survive the fight, the dragon was still at large. Uriel made the decision to bring the fight to the dragon, dismissing Vox Machina from the palace. Vex'ahlia then reveals she felt the presence of someone working with the dragon in the council, meaning one of them was a mole. She believed it to be Fince likely because of his creepy exterior. Keyleth asks what their next move is and Vex carries out tasks for Vax & Pike to go to Gilmore's while the rest of them look for Fince. When Scanlan, finds where Fince was going, he gathers everyone to come and see. The door Fince entered was locked. Keyleth tried to melt the lock with a heat spell, but accidentally set Scanlan's shirt on fire in the process. Vax picked the door lock and found a hidden door to the cellar when they got inside. They eventually find Fince stealing documents from Krieg's cellar. Fince tries to explain himself before Krieg murders him from behind, revealing Krieg was the mole all along. The party gives chase to him, landing themselves in a room filled with magic. Keyleth looks around at the artwork inside, taking not of Krieg's affinity for dragons. Grog suddenly becomes infatuated with a pornographic painting, much to Keyleth's disgust. She throws a book at him, which bounces off his head and into the painting, revealing a hidden portal. Vax flirtatiously congratulates Keyleth, making her bashful.
They go threw it, revealing a huge treasure trove. Most of the becomes ecstatic while Keyleth cautiously looks around, taking note of a few gemstones embedded into a rock. The gemstones reveal green eyes which ominously whispers "Intruders". Krieg shows back up and reveals to have actually been the dragon all along. Another fight ensues and Brimscythe begins to manhandle the party in battle a second time. When they have a moment, the party devises a plan. Scanlan creates an illusion to trick the party. With Brimscythe hoodwinked, the party each play their part in killing the dragon. Keyleth begins the procedure by using her vines to pin down Brimscythe's left wing. Eventually they manage to kill the dragon. They then run as fast as they can as the place began to collapse. They return to the council, who congratulates and thanks Vox Machina for their victory, giving them a deed and key to their new keep as a reward. Keyleth excitedly hugs Vex & Vax over it.
The morning after their first night in the keep, Keyleth happily bids everyone good morning as they are eating breakfast. Lady Allura shows up seeking an audience. She informs them that Sovereign Uriel expects them at his banquet. They eventually make it to the banquet the following night. Begrudgingly leaving their weapons at the main booth. Keyleth and the others disperse as they get inside.
After that, Pike and the others reconnect just in time to see Percy in a state of anger and paranoia, explaining that the Briarwoods, who just showed up to the banquet took everything from him when he was a teenager. Upon learning they would be staying over night, Vax offers to sneak into their room. The party, excluding Vax then attend Uriel's table. Keyleth notices Percy grimace as he sees the Briarwoods.
After Percy has an outburst from a lie about the de Rolos spewed by Delilah, the party takes him away to talk in private. Percy tells them the Briarwoods killed his entire family and conquered Whitestone, surprising the party. After learning who the Briarwoods really were, the party decides to leave and save Vax, as he was in the room they would be staying in.
After Vex sensed Vax was in imminent danger, Grog throws the guy who made them leave their weapons out of his booth under Pike's permission. They collected their weapons and ran out of the building to save Vax, who was just about to be killed by Sylas. Keyleth attacks Delilah whilst taking the form of an eagle. Deliah strikes her down before she can attack though. Keyleth later grows several thick vines to protect herself and her friends. Delilah later calls for their carriage driver. The couple then take off. As Percy gets ready to shoot the driver for his working for the Briarwoods, the party is stopped and seized by Uriel's guards.
Keyleth and the others are taken before Uriel who reprimands them for attacking the Briarwoods and thus, ruining the banquet. Lady Allura calms him down, promising to handle the party accordingly, by putting them under house arrest. They are then confined to their keep where Keyleth occupies herself with her plant magic. Keyleth listens in as Percy explains his past with the Briarwoods. Afterwards, Percy finds a secret opening in the room that leads to a hallway, which leads to a way out, but Jarett catches them and has them separated. Keyleth as locked up with Percy.
Keyleth tries to make small talk with him, but the gunslinger remains unresponsive. Picking up on this, Keyleth decides to relate to him. She informs him of a conflict she has with her own family. She explains she had to prove herself worthy to her family as an Ashari member. Percy tells her he personally thinks she is worthy regardless. While he is sympathetic, he points out the Keyleth's family is at least still alive.
Once Grog escapes from his confinement with Pike, he warns the others about incoming wraiths. Understanding they were under attack, Jarett gives them weapons to fend off the wraiths.
The wraiths gain the upper hand at the start of the battle as they were in darkness and could not by hit by their victims. That comes to a change however, when Keyleth conjures light, with a little encouragement from Percy, rendering the wraiths vulnerable. The party could finally hit and destroy them.
The party begins to leave in the morning but Pike remains behind as she needs to reconnect with the Everlight. She looks to Keyleth, passing the responsibility of being the party's light on to her. They then devise a plan for getting what they need in order to start their journey. Keyleth takes part in breaking into Gilmore's to swipe helpful items, but Gilmore catches her and the other half-elves. However, he chose to be lenient and let them buy what they needed to. Keyleth checks out a finger trap and struggled to release herself, until Vax helped her out. They leave after purchasing their items and find the others have stolen a horse cart.
Scanlan tries to read Delilah's journal, but the language it is written in is not what he is fluent in, mistranslating the word, "Ziggurat". Keyleth corrects him and while she wanted to be of more help, she admitted to falling asleep frequently in ancient abyssal class.
Vex has Percy stop the cart when she feels a disturbing presence. Keyleth mistakes it for a mundane dog, but it turns out to be monstrous canine creatures sent by Delilah. They capture Scanlan as he had Delilah's book. The party chases after them all the way to a cliff. The chase gets to the point where the dog holding Scanlan jumps over the cliff with the gnomes, seemingly killing him. The party mourns for a moment until Scanlan reveals to have saved himself with his magic hand. The party then notices how dangerously close they are to the cliff and they all jump out, losing their carriage and stuff they bought from Gilmore in the process.
When they find a spot to make camp, Keyleth treats Vax's injuries when fighting the canine. The group later talks about what their craziest kill Was. Keyleth explains how she accidentally sent an attacking duergar into a pool of lava, leaving Scanlan and Vax slightly disturbed.
When they finally make it to Whitestone, they see it in the desecrated state that it is. Percy later gains their attention by pointing to seven corpses hung from the Sun Tree, each corpse dressed as a member of Vox Machina, showing them the Briarwoods were anticipating them. hough unsettled by this, the party had to move on as a resistance member called them over to hide with them as a zombie giant was heading their direction. When the resistance member notices Percy's attire, she asks if he's another member of it. The party is later taken to Keeper Yennen, who is amazed to see Percy again and seeing him as a leader now. Yennen takes them into a secret hideout. When Grog sees that there are ale barrels, but finds them empty, he becomes furious.
The party later try to devise plans to rescue Archibald Desnay. after Yennen informed Percy he had been captured. Keyleth's plan was to ask Whitestone's livestock to help them break into the dungeons and free Archie. Since Keyleth's idea was one of the bad ones, Vex devised her own plan. She, Keyleth, and Grog would take the front door of the building the Briarwoods' men were keeping Archie in. Grog tosses a few Briarwoods guards while Keyleth picks up the keys to the prison. After getting in, they pass by a few other prisoners. Vex opts to leave them, but Keyleth beckons her to free them too. Vex reluctantly caves. The party reconnects and they save Archie, only to be stopped in their tracks by Sir Kerrion Stonefell. A fight ensues. Keyeth becomes angry upon watching Stonefell murder one of the resistance members they met early, attacking him in tiger form, only to be stopped a few guards. Eventually though, they win.
They all flee from the prison, returning to Yennen's hideout. As Percy explains the origin story of his pepperbox, Keyleth tried to put life back into the Sun tree, she accidentally starts a fire, prompting Vax to douse it. She gets scolded by Vex for nearly revealing where they were hiding before Vax broke it up. Later, the party run off on a rescue mission for Cassandra, while spying on Professor Anders when they find the building the two are located in. Scanlan suggests he lures the guards away from Anders' house.
Upon seeing a sign that Scanlan's solo mission was a success, the party runs to enter Anders' home. Grog impulsively bursts the door open, where guards were pointing bows at the party. Another fight breaks out and they kill all the guards. Percy runs off to confront Anders. Keyleth eventually catches up to him and sees his sister's throat had been slit. Percy begs for Keyleth's help and she complies by compressing moss, silver and dirt to the wound. She then used her magic to restore Cassandra's consciousness. She soon bolts to life, initially frightening Keyleth, who later recomposes herself and happily embraces Cassandra, grateful that she's alive. She then ran off to help Percy fight the animated armors.
After the armors are dispatched, Anders possessed Grog into attacking Percy, Keyleth, Vex, & Vax. This escalates when Vex tries to kill Anders to break the possession, but Anders possesses her, Keyleth, & Vax in the same manner. When it seems he has the upper hand, Percy eventually manages to shoot Anders' tongue out, restoring his friends' minds before killing Anders. His friends notice smoke rising from him a second time as this happened. After that, they reconnect with Scanlan outside, who warns them of a hoard of zombies heading their way.
They made a run for it to Archibald's hideout. They were not safe there for long however, as zombies burst through the door and attacked. They managed to slay the zombies, but Scanlan got bit. They eventually move out of the hideout, where they find a zombie giant heading their way. Unfortunately, Duke Vedmire showed up with two more giants, ordering them to kill Vox Machina. The party split up, not ready to fight them, before meeting back up at the Sun Tree. When they reconnect, a wave of zombies heads their way and Keyleth manages to freeze them in a wave of ice. Try as they may have, more zombies showed up, making the denizens of Whitestone lose hope. But after a rousing speech from Percy, Grog encouraged everyone to kill everything. The zombies overwhelm them however. Vax confesses his love for Keyleth and she was about to kiss him until she recollected herself and chastised him for the time he chose in telling her this.
When things seemed hopeless, Pike returned, coolly greeting the party, much to Keyleth and the others' amazement. The fight got easier from there. When the zombie hoard finally lets up, Vox Machina, along with Cassandra hunt down the Briarwoods. They go through an underground dungeon on the way, with Keyleth awkwardly complimenting Percy about it on the way. A prisoner calls out to them asking to be freed in exchange for helping them find the Briarwoods, but Percy only turns his pepperbox on the prisoner. He tries to kill her before Cassandra stops him. Percy reveals to the party that the prisoner is Dr. Anna Ripley, a former Briarwood pawn.
After Scanlan pulls Percy over to discuss his escalating violence, Keyleth suggests Pike divine what is driving his actions. She becomes frightened to find out there is some unnatural internal force behind Percy's excessive wrath. She beckons to take him to a temple but Percy refuses, putting their hunt for the Briarwoods as their top priority. After Percy takes Ripley prisoner, Ripley leads the party to the Ziggurat. Eventually, they make it to the crypt of the dungeon, where they realize it was holding corpses that were animated by Delilah's magic. When the fight is over, Ripley leads the party to a room, which is revealed to be a residuem manufacturing room. Suddenly, Cassandra traps the party (Save Vax who managed to escape) in the room, with the Briarwoods revealing themselves to have brainwashed Cassandra. Sylas then possess Vax to set off an acid trap to kill the party.
Keyleth uses her vines to attempt to stop the acid flow, but it fails. When the acid level rises, Scanlan lifts everybody up with his magic hand. After Percy points to a mechanism that controls the flow, he mentions there is a third lever to be pulled at the same time as the two they saw and that it is at the bottom of the acid. Keyleth is outraged at how impossible that sounds, until Grog dives into the acid to reach the third lever. Once all the levers are pulled and the acid is drained, the party set off for the ziggurat.
