At first I hated the V because I didn't choose it. But now it's my choice. I think that matters. I blamed my powers for my problems. But it's not true. The V isn't good or bad. It just depends on the person using it. I wanted to use my powers to do good. To fight for the ones I love. I almost lost Frenchie because I couldn't fight. I can't risk that again.
~ The Female coming to terms with her past and who she is.
I- I got rhythm.
~ The Female's first spoken words.

Kimiko Miyashiro, also known as The Female of the Species or simply The Female, is one of the three tritagonists (alongside Frenchie and Mother's Milk) in the 2019 Amazon Prime TV Series The Boys.

A native of Japan, Kimiko and her brother Kenji were captured by the Shining Light Liberation Army to become soldiers, but she managed to escape before being smuggled into the United States. Injected with Compound V to become a supe terrorist, she is freed from her imprisonment by Frenchie, whom forms a bond with her. Becoming a member of the Boys, the Female learn of her origins while she helps them in their goal of stopping Vought-International and the Seven

She is portrayed by Karen Fukuhara (who also played Katana in Suicide Squad, and also voiced Glimmer in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Kipo Oak in Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, F in Star Wars Visions and Samantha Nishimura in Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft.), and by Momona Tamada as young Female.

Overview[]

The Female is a mute young woman found locked up in the basement of an Asian crime syndicate, years of horrific experimentation have given her super-human abilities. She is freed by The Boys, and eventually joins them in their quest to defeat the Seven.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Kimiko Miyashiro was born on the coast of Japan to unnamed parents, and is the older sister to Kenji Miyashiro. When she was young, Kimiko and Kenji were captured Shining Light Liberation Army, and Kimiko turned mute when witnessing her parents' brutal demise. Taken in to be raised as the army's soldiers to fight in the Philippines, Kimiko watched over her brother while they were imprisoned. At some point, she managed to escape from captivity and was smuggled into the United States by Roberta Cho, and brought her to the triads in New York. The triads proceeded to inject with Compound V into her as it was given to them by A-Train, an compound addict and member of the Seven. The supplying of the compound is later revealed to be a plot by Vought-International to weaponize people to become "supe terrorist", which will force the government to put the Seven and other supes into the military.

Season One[]

Despite suffering from the torture and injection of the compound, Kimiko remained determined to find her brother and return home. One day, she was freed from her imprisonment by Frenchie, a member of the Boys who was finding any information on the compound alongside Mother's Milk and Hughie Campbell. Upon being freed, Kimiko brutally massacred her tormenters before attempting to attack the Boys, but she is stopped as they lock themselves in her cage. Seeing that she is free, Kimiko left the basement to head to the New York penn station to return home. After killing Roberta at her nail salon, the Female silently hides in a electronics store to watch television, but is found by Frenchie, whom attempts to connect with her about his childhood. However, she is frightened when the channel is changed on the tv, and escapes.

At penn station, Kimiko spots the Boys attempting to capture her, but attempts to escape on the train tracks before being attacked by A-Train. Frenchie is able to get A-Train away from the Female, leaving Butcher to knock her unconscious when she attacks his teammate out of fear. She is taken to their hideout and chained up, leaving Frenchie to watch over her as they leave to Believe Expo to get more information about Compound V. A-Train later discovers Frenchie's connection to the Boys, leading to the Seven to task Black Noir to eliminate the Female. Frenchie is informed by Cherie that he is burned and decides to leave the hideout, but frees Kimiko since he doesn't believe she deserves to be locked up.

She attempts her escape, but returns to save Frenchie from Black Noir, resulting in her being heavily injured during the fight. She survives due to her healing factor, and is taken to their second hideout where she meets the others. Frenchie soon believes that Kimiko's past haunts Mother's Milk since they learned that all supes are made from Compound V, and advises that they bring in Mesmer to learn of her past. Milk agrees and brings Mesmer, who reveals that Kimiko was a soldier of the Liberation army before being smuggled into the states, where she was made to become a supe terrorist. When A-Train attempts to harm Hughie and his father, Campbell has Kimiko assist him by injuring the supe before leaving.

Following Naqib's attack, Vought manages to keep the compound a secret due to the CIA's intervention. The Boys are then branded terrorist, and are forced to go on the run from the government. Vought's black ops soldiers then capture Milk, Frenchie and Kimiko, but Butcher abandons his team to get his revenge on Homelander. However, Hughie manages to get himself arrested to rescue his friends, and they escape with Starlight's assistance.

Season Two[]

Still in hiding, the Boys travel to a harbor to find a ship destroyed, and Kimiko thinks its her brother when seeing an origami figure there. Upon Butcher's return, the group are assigned to capture a supe terrorist who has the ability to telekinetic move things. Kimiko reunites with Kenji, but helps the Boys capture him when he refuses to leave the Shining Light since he believes in their cause. When attempting to return to Grace Mallory, they are stopped by the Deep's whale, forcing them to return on land and enter a drain while being chased by the Seven. Kenji is freed from his restraints to attack Homelander, but he is attacked by the Seven's newest member Stormfront.

Kimiko assists her brother in fighting Stormfront, but she is nearly killed by the supe until Kenji intervenes. She the witnesses her brother's death at the hands of Stormfront, but is forced to flee from the scene, reuniting with the Boys with a desire to kill the supe for her actions. Going to one of Stormfront's rally's, Kimiko attempts to kill her, but is stopped by Frenchie before she can go on the stage. Wanting to quench her blood lust, the Female meets with Cherie to be set up with the Albanian Mafia, who hire her as a hitwoman to kill their targets. Frenchie confronts her for her actions, but she rejects him, not wanting his help. She continues to work with the Boys when infiltrating the Sage Grove Center, but rekindles her friendship with Frenchie when she learns of his past connections to Lamplighter.

When Becca Butcher meets with the Boys to help her rescue Ryan from Homelander and Stormfront, Kimiko and others agree to help Billy in his plan. When preparing to leave, Stormfront attacks the group following her ties to the Nazi Party being exposed by Hughie and Starlight. Kimiko, Starlight and Queen Maeve soon attack Stormfront, but the latter escapes when she is cornered during the fight. After Stormfront's defeat, Kimiko continues to teach Frenchie sign language.

Season Three[]

Kimiko remains a member of the Boys, whom work with Hughie to get the directive to stop corrupted supes in exchange they don't kill or harm them. Targeting the supe Termite, Kimiko, Frenchie and Butcher witness him accidently murder his partner, but capture him when he attempts to escape. Following the mission, the Female begins to question whatever or not the Boys are doing good things, and intends on leaving her violent life behind.

Personality[]

The Female could best be described as mute, brutal and unpredictable, due to the years of abuse and imprisonment she was forced to endure.

The Female was at first considered a threat and mistrusted by everyone in The Boys except Frenchie, who is implied to be the first person to treat her with kindness and she begins to form a bond with him. After she flees and Frenchie is attacked by Black Noir in an alley, Kimiko intervenes and saves his life, demonstrating the bond they had developed had become a mutual trust. She also becomes close with Hughie and Annie, as they become surrogate siblings of sorts.

Despite being essentially silent as a character, the Female does develop and participate during stories and demonstrate emotion, occasionally relying on other characters such as Frenchie to fill in gaps or by emphatic artistic references, like her expressions or body language.

She developed an intimate friendship with Frenchie throughout seasons 1 to 3, with the latter half of 3 seeming to enter romantic interest. However, in the debut of season 4, they abruptly halt this path, as both had evidently decided to remain friends. While Kimiko's interest is no longer romantic, she still treasures Frenchie as her dearest friend, thus becomes upset when due to demons from his past, he began to shut her out without explanation. Despite his refusal to see her, she continues to visit the prison he is in, hoping to support him like he did for her; although, another factor is that she feels like she has no proper life to fall back into, so he is her only proper stability. However, the supposed end of her romantic interest was revealed to be a lie, since she believed that Frenchie deserved someone better than her, but when he assures her that no one is better than her, she resumed a romantic attachment and they began dating.

Powers and Abilities[]

A miracle. You are a miracle.
~ Frenchie upon seeing Kimiko heal from her injuries.

Powers[]

  • Compound V: Having been injected with Compound V by the triads, Kimiko has demonstrated numerous powers granted by the substance.
    • Superhuman Strength: Kimiko has demonstrated enhanced strength that surpasses an average human or Olympic athlete, able to snap necks, break legs and rip faces off with incredible ease. She could also fight against supes such as Black Noir or Stormfront, and later restrained Soldier Boy with Starlight's help.
    • Superhuman Speed: Having superior speed than an athlete, the Female can run at great speeds to attack or dodge her opponents attacks. She quickly pushed Black Noir when he was about to attack Frenchie, and later pushed Frenchie out of Soldier Boy's energy blast.
    • Superhuman Agility: Her agility has immensely enhanced, evident in how she pounced on a man.
    • Superhuman Reflexes: Kimiko's reflexes have also been enhanced, allowing her to dodge incoming attacks or react to another person, such as when A-Train arrived at penn station.
    • Superhuman Durability: She can endure great trauma and injuries that could kill an individual, with Mother's Milk telling Lamplighter that setting her ablaze would only piss her off. Even though bullets or stabbing weapons could penetrate her skin, her healing factor factors into her ability to endure any attack.
    • Superhuman Senses: She could senses Vought's black ops soldiers arriving.
    • Regenerative Healing Factor: Kimiko can regenerate from any fatal injury or trauma within seconds, able to survive Black Noir's fatal attacks, Stormfront snapping her neck, and being shot in the head. If disemboweled or suffering a cracked skull, she can physically push the pieces back together to assist her healing. If her limbs are dismembered, they can be reattached and restored; however, if the limb is absent long enough, she regrows a replacement limb, although it takes hours more time than her typical regeneration.

Abilities[]

  • Intimidation: Due to her brutal methods when killing people, she is able to terrify her opponents in combat. During the basement massacre, a triad member killed himself to be spared of her methods.
  • Skilled Combatant: Though not on the level of Billy Butcher or Mother's Milk, Kimiko is a skilled fighter, able to hold her own against others. While she can dodge attacks, she often allows the impact to happen, relying upon her healing factor to survive, so she can reach the opponent faster.
  • Musician: Either from learning during her childhood or during her time with the Boys, Kimiko can play the piano.

Trivia[]

  • She is similar to Wolverine and X-23 from Marvel comics, as both show animalistic behavior and have a accelerated healing factor.
  • In the show, according to Kenji Miyashiro, she is fully mute due to trauma endured after seeing her parents brutally killed in front of her. In the comics, however, she is actually able to talk, but apparently suffers from selective mutism, with there being only one occasion in the comics when she spoke. In Nonetheless, she usually communicates with the others in the group through Frenchie, who is inferred to learned to understand her gestures through their bond.
  • In the show's fourth season, however, it's revealed that she had lied to her brother and that the reason for her mutism was due to the trauma of her training in the Shining Light Army. It's also in this season that Kimiko talks for the first time in the series (the fantasy sequences in Season 3 not withstanding), where she screams "no" as she sees Frenchie being taken away by Cate Dunlap in the finale.
  • She is Japanese and so is her name. Flashbacks show that she's taken to a war torn Philippines to serve in the Shining Light Liberation Army.
  • Her name is comes from a poem of the same name.
