Just someone who cares.
~ The Kind Man after being asked by Valdes about his identity.

The Kind Man, occasionally known as Dr. K.M██, is a recurring supporting character in the SCP Foundation series. He is a mysterious individual capable of inserting himself into narratives for the sole reason of helping the victim of the story by improving their situation and make their lives as better as he can. He appears in various articles although some don’t outright include him, but instead a similar character filling his role.

Biography[]

Spreading Kindness[]

It is completely unknown how the Kind Man came to be. According to SCP-7292, he seemingly appeared out of nowhere around 1870 and began inserting himself into stories involving innocent characters suffering unjustly. He would infiltrate into the SCP Foundation under the alias of Dr. Kind Man in order to secretly comfort various anomalies and personnel suffering. Some of the personnel he comforted would leave the Foundation and join other Groups of Interest, but would always refuse to attack their former employers and instead uphold the Kind Man's legacy.

When the Foundation assigned Dr. Eliza Chuang as Research Scientist of SCP-414-1, tall masked humanoids going after antisocial people and inducing into them crippling depression designated SCP-414-2 that could be temporarily cured through continual touch with other people, the humanoids appeared inside her office and just they did with their other victims they induced into her SCP-414-2. As she began suffering from depression Dr. Alice Ogawa interviewed Chuang over her condition before being replaced by the Kind Man who would periodically interview her, probably to keep her from being overwhelmed from her depression, but she would eventually succumb and commit suicide.

After the Foundation captured SCP-797, a specter stealing human body parts in order to create an entire new body for it to inhabit, the Kind Man requested to the higher ups that instead of treating it like a monster by experimenting on it and trapping it they analyze its behavior as it could be intelligent and capable of communication.

The Kind Man once created SCP-979, a living sculpture of a rabbit that can induce hallucinations and synesthesia to those who interacted with it, soon making them act like 979. The Kind Man showed SCP-979 in an art exhibition in Chile where the Foundation quickly became involved and captured the anomaly after numerous people became affected by it.

At some point, the Kind Man got hold of a letter written by an instance of SCP-1204, a human being infected with a parasite that made them feel deeply lonely filled with a need of finding their special one. The letter described how said instance wished to unite with its reader, fall in love and live happily until the end. It is unknown what the Kind Man did with the letter, or if he met with the SCP-1204 instance.

After the Foundation got hold of SCP-1252, the Kind Man attempted to deliver it a drawing of it and its creator, Susan, made by her before her death. SCP-1252 sensed the letter’s arrival and requested the personnel to receive it but was denied due to a possible anomaly being involved.

The Kind Man would also create SCP-1353, a group of living needle-felted colorful centipedes which embed themselves inside people's bodies during the night and remain dormant until their host experience nostalgia at which point they will begin to roam inside them which caused extreme discomfort. The Kind Man sought for SCP-1353 to comfort those who suffer from nostalgia by hugging them from the inside but as it caused them discomfort the host would simply try to avoid this emotion.

As SCP-7413 began capturing people and "killing" them in a dilapidated shack in a urban forest preserve, the Kind Man notified the local police of entity's rampage. After some scuffle, the police managed to capture SCP-7413 which was then contained by the Foundation.

Around the time of Christmas, the Kind Man was able to break inside SCP-1252's chamber and tried to comfort it, convincing it that its creator Susan had loved it and it was the most important friend to her. He then delivered it the drawing, showing SCP-1252 that Susan loved it before leaving. The Kind Man then visited Adam, an Ashkenazi Jewish whose wife had abandoned him following their son's death and began living inside SCP-1551, a house maintained by the Kind Man for people to inhabit when they were at their lowest in life. As per usual the Kind Man left food for Adam, but when confronted by the latter the Man quickly left after wishing him a Merry Christmas. After that, the Kind Man went to a recently deceased Boy Scout who had died after being ran over by a car while traversing a road. The Kind Man guided the boy to the other instances of SCP-747, deceased children who had come back to life wearing animal masks and can transform people into their favorite animal doll. They soon became friends and began telepathically discussing with each other about their dolls, while the Kind Man left once again. The Foundation became alerted by these containment breaches, and heightened security around the anomalies in order to prevent similar future incidents.

The Kind Man was possibly involved with the creation of SCP-1771, an anomaly revolving around people living inside houses where they are trapped and would offer hospitality and participate together in various hobbies before being replaced by younger people with the change of seasons. The Kind Man used to be a redecorator of one of the houses but left as his time was running out.

When Foundation doctor Avery Solace went to bed after working hard with some anomalies and being haunted by other beings, the Kind Man manifested near them and tucked them in to comfort them.

When a woman in Ukraine became pregnant with a reality-bender, she went mad and because of this attempted to abort it inside her apartment's bathroom. This caused the fetus to retaliate and transform its mother into a septic tank while manipulating the entire apartment which would become known as SCP-1782. The Kind Man was able to sense the child's horrible pain and attempted to elevate its suffering but seemingly to no avail.

When the home of a child named Michael Farris and his living teddy bear named Mr. Bear caught fire, the two of them got badly burned, forcing Mr. Bear to use its cloth to replace Michael’s burned skin. After the catastrophe, the Kind Man got hold of Mr. Bear and took it to a residence and replaced its cloth with patchworks, leaving Michael to be claimed by the Foundation. Seeing Mr. Bear's healing properties the Kind Man renamed it Kairos and sent it as a gift to sick and injured people who were in need of it, but would also eventually fall into Foundation hands.

When his friend Jack decided to retire as the deity of autumn and attempt to bring back the old incarnation of Halloween, the Kind Man helped him in organizing raves for people to dance and celebrate. As Jack had become busy with his raves he would give the Kind Man's number which led to a random phone booth for people to discuss about his business. When Foundation personnel Researcher Witzke called the number the Kind Man answered and tried to argue to let Jack continue his work as it wasn’t harming anyone before hanging up.

After the Foundation acquired SCP-2353, an animated female mannequin that was obsessed with fashion and would react negatively to people wearing "inappropriate" clothes, SCP-2662, a friendly eldritch being cursed to form fanatic cults around him, and SCP-2882, a tattooed man who when is told by someone their past experience could learn how it exactly happened while forgetting his own life, the Kind Man under the guises of Agent ████████ and a Foundation doctor accessed the anomalies' entries on SCiPnet to try to possibly help them.

When the AI inhabiting a space inside a Library, designated SCP-2772, which was created by O5-13/The Kid to act as its younger brother, died as a result of a malfunction, the Kid attempted to say its parting words with its "brother" but because of the malfunction the message was left indecipherable. Thankfully, the Kind Man was able to discern what the Kid wanted to say and left a letter along with a white rose near SCP-2772 in which he wrote what the Kid wanted to say to its brother as it passed away.

At some point the Kind Man entered inside an abandoned house where two young siblings were eternally stuck in a temporal loop designated SCP-2909 where they were unable to leave or die and be reunited with their family. The Kind Man would attempt to free them by finally shooting them and release them of their torment, but because of the anomaly the bullet could never hit, causing the Kind Man's actions to be in vain.

As the Foundation personnel Doctor Malcolm began struggling with interviewing SCP-2992, a man possessed by a deity with the ability to make people never stop thinking about the music he recommended, he asked that in the next interview he be assisted by Dr. Kind Man. The request was approved and the two doctors confronted SCP-2992. In order to persuade 2992 to reveal more about him and the deity possessing him, the Kind Man acted more open minded and began dancing together to 2992’s music. While dancing, the Kind Man proceeded to interview him, inquiring what his aim was and how would he succeed. 2992 explained that his and the deity's aim was to engulf the world in music and would achieve it no matter what. However, when presented with the fact of his detainment by the Foundation, 2992 became aggressive and revealed to the doctors that there were others like him who were spreading the deity's influence. In light of this the Kind Man advised to not panic and not change 2992's containment procedures, but Malcolm thought otherwise, advising they fortify 2992's containment. The Site Director Maharaj formed a compromise, keeping 2992's containment as is but only for the time being until more information can be extracted.

After the Shark Punching Center transformed one of their agents into a creature capable of breathing on land and underwater and punch sharks that threatened humanity, becoming SCP-7475-J, the Kind Man was there to witness the mutated agent's campaign of protecting humans from sharks. Seeing that the agent had given up his life and everything he held dear to forever live in the oceans and punch sharks, the Kind Man couldn't help himself but feel pity for him.

As SCP-682-CU was being asphyxiated from so much toxic love that almost all personnel gave to it, depriving the poor trapped creature of sleep, warmth and food, the Kind Man visited it the night before its death. He cradled SCP-682-CU in his hands, letting it to finally get some sleep and dream of its sandy habitat in which it bathed in sunlight, ate numerous insects and played around while no one was there to suffocate it with needless love.

After possible reality-bender Jake Brown was murdered by a mysterious entity designated SCP-5995, the Kind Man under the name of Agent Kevin McHannon of the Global Occult Coalition interviewed several people who were close to the victim. Under another guise of police officer Keith McKinsey the Kind Man interviewed Brown's first wife Jaquelynne Strauss. The Kind Man asked about her relationship with Jake Brown to which she explained that they had met back in highschool and seeing that he was discomforted over a possible dark secret she was reminded of her alcoholic brother and tried to comfort him. This led to her marrying him and conceiving a son but later divorced due to Brown being mostly a burden to the family. The Kind Man remarked Strauss' kindness towards others before informing her that Brown had been murdered, much to her shock. After some years had passed following Brown's murder, his second wife Lauren Brown was interviewed by the Kind Man in which she demanded to know if any updates on the case had arose and why they didn't surrender the body yet. The Kind Man tried to explain to her the situation while maintaining the Veil of Secrecy protocol and not reveal too much. He tried to consolidate her by telling her that a special device was being constructed to help them in identifying the culprit behind the murder. However, the Kind Man was forced to leave this case and was replaced by the GOC agent Christopher Malone, Jr.

One night, the Kind Man came across SCP-682, a furious but sad personality once part of Veronica Fitzroy who created it as a coping mechanism for her traumatic past. The Kind Man took good care of the creature and in exchange 682 told him stories that paralleled its relationship with Fitzroy.

The Kind Man also assisted another of his friends, SCP-7833, a humanoid wearing a Vejigante costume, in manifesting himself in annual parades that took place in Puerto Rico for the sole purpose of brightening the lives of the poor participants. When Foundation agent Juan Valdes of MTF Iota-83 attempted to follow 7833, the Kind Man prevented him from pursuing his friend, saying that all SCP-7833 wanted to do was to help the local resident by bringing joy and wasn't doing any harm to anyone. Valdes attempted to call for backup, but the Kind Man interfered with his earpiece and after his friend was gone, he bid the agent farewell.

Possible Endings[]

The Melody Of Autumn, Passing Into Winter[]

Years after Jack got hold of both SCP-2992-1 and SCP-1969 to take over the entire world and force humanity to participate in his raves, the Kind Man encountered a remorseful Jack in an empty street after the latter was tired of organizing raves. The Kind Man removed SCP-1969 from Jack's neck and put back his old pumpkin head, making 2331 feel whole again. The two then decided to leave this all behind and allow humanity to be free and rebuild their society back to how it was.

Where Would You Like To Go?[]

In the future in which humanity began expanding to outer space, Foundation researcher Alexandra Maxwell began struggling living in xyr current place while being haunted by xyr abusive past. The Kind Man feeling bad for xyr, helped Alexandra to make xyr way to SCP-249, a door which allowed its user to teleport somewhere in the world where they desired, and wished xyr good luck on xyr journey.

Terrible Sunlight[]

In a future in which all normal humans had died, leaving only the anomalous ones alive, SCP-6118 with the aid of Percival Darke of Marshall, Carter, and Dark, his brother The Investor, Icky and Lolly of Herman Fuller's Circus of the Disquieting and several members of the SPC, traversed the interdimensional Kingdom of Alagadda to rescue SCP-049 from the Ambassador. In order to do so they needed to get past the three Lords of Alagadda by participating in rhyme games. Lolly and the Investor dealt with both the Red and the White Lords, but when it came time to face the Yellow Lord, dado who was supposed to join them and help the group with the last remaining Lord informed them that he would be unable to arrive. In that moment, the Kind Man manifested himself near the group and offered his help in dealing with the Yellow Lord. The two started the rhyme game in which the Kind Man implored the Lord to show him kindness as he was able to see that the being was secretly suffering just like everyone other denizen of Alagadda. The Yellow Lord refused at first, but eventually relented and soon the two began dancing together, allowing 6118 to go save 049.

Appearance[]

The true appearance of the Kind Man is never revealed and there are no details about it apart of being simply described as a kind man with kind eyes and smile. While in Alagadda, he wore a mask with a less warming smile.

Powers and Abilities[]

The Kind Man is a mysterious being who appears to have some control over the stories of characters, possibly being a metafictional character like SCP-423 and SCP-3143. He mainly used this property to insert himself into stories revolving around people and beings needlessly suffering and try to manipulate the story to comfort them. The Kind Man could also create various objects and entities to help those who suffered but he was unable to completely change their written stories to give them straight up good endings and all he could do was to do something small to ease their pain.

Personality[]

The Kind Man is constantly described by those who met him as a kind man. Given from his actions he unarguably earned this title as all he cares about is helping as much as he could various people and creatures who were needlessly suffering, including both anomalies and Foundation personnel. Although at first it appears that some of his actions were somewhat ambiguous and didn't appear to actually help people, it was part of his plans to make people understand the situation and help became at peace with their state, meaning that the Kind Man was also quite intelligent. The Kind Man was able to know about each individual he helped on a personal level and had a unique relationship with each of them while caring for all of them equally regardless of their background.
