King Frederic is one of the three overarching protagonists (alongside Queen Arianna and Lord Demanitus) of Disney's Tangled franchise.

He is the benevolent king of the kingdom of Corona, husband of Queen Arianna and Princess Rapunzel's father, who became extremely sad after her kidnap when she was just a baby, and always wished her to come back, firing hot-air flying lanterns with the seal of Corona, hoping that they would guide Rapunzel home. After she came back, Frederic improved her safety a lot, learning with time, as she went on adventures, that his daughter can take care of herself, and that "there is more on her".

He was voiced by Clancy Brown, who also voiced Mr. Krabs in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise, Santa Claus in Phineas and Ferb's Christmas Vacation and George Stacy in The Spectacular Spider-Man animated series.

Personality[]

He is typically a stoic, but compassionate man. However, after Rapunzel's kidnapping, his compassion was broken, with his grief turning him towards more brutal decisions, such as becoming far harsher on all crime, with even lesser criminal acts like burglary/thievery earning a death sentence. Upon reuniting with his daughter, his old self largely returned, making him a just king once more.

While Rapunzel's return had restored Frederick's kindness, the trauma of losing her made him become overprotective, assigning guards to follow his daughter, and restricting her movements, unwittingly provoking her own trauma from being Gothel's prisoner. His fear made him ignore her complaints, however, after realising how his protection was actually hurting Rapunzel, he was able to lessen his grip to allow her true freedom, believing she is strong enough to explore on her own terms.

Growing up, he lacked an adventurous spirit, preferring to undertake indoor activities like reading and making models. Despite this, he entered a relationship with the outgoing Arianna, whom he adored so much he accompanied her along her spirited endeavours; while it was a struggle for him, the company of Arianna made him enjoy even daring adventures. He is content with being fairly self-restrained, but he occasionally believes he should be more adventurous, so relies on Eugene's aid - showing that he can forgive his past crimes and interact with him as a friend. Similarly, the king was able to trust Eugene's redemption enough to allow him to become head of the royal guards.

Background[]

King Frederic is part of the royal family of Corona, and one day he became king. He fell in love and married with a adventurous woman whose name was Arianna, and she became queen of Corona. Despite severe, Frederic is fair and lovable, and all of his sudits (or most of them) love him for how he makes the kingdom better. One day, Arianna became pregnant, but she became sick. The king then started a quest around the kingdom looking for a mythical flower that came to existence by a sundrop, and could heal anything. WHen the guards found it, the King used the Flower to heal Arianna, ignoring the warnings of Quirin, a former member of the Dark Kingdom, where the Moonstone resides, the antagonizing magical force of the Sundrop Flower, and he warned that if the Flower was eliminated, the Moonstone's powers would consume everything in the form of pointy black rocks. The Queen then was healed, and Rapunzel was born, a baby with long blond hair. One night however, a old woman named Gothel, who constantly used the Flower along with a magical chant to retrieve her youth, kidnaped Rapunzel, and the King became depressively sad, and ordered the guards to track down and arrest every single criminal in the kingdom, including a mere petty thief, who was father of a girl named Caine, who'd vow revenge against him and the royal family of Corona.

Tangled[]

The King started a tradition where the people of the kingdom should light up baloon-lke lanterns with the Corona seal in it and drop them to the sky, at Rapunzel's birthday. to see if they could guide the lost princess home again. For eighteen years, the kingdom continued the tradition and Rapunzel grew up with Gothel, locked in a tower, away from the real world, but always fascinated by the lanterns that always showed up at her birthday Until a thief known as Flynn RIder accepted guiding her to see the lanterns that she always wanted to see. As she got to Corona, she saw a drawing of King Frederic and Queen Arianna holding Rapunzel as a baby, made to celebrate her birthday. After falling in love with Flynn (real name: Eugene Fitzherbert) and discovered Mother Gothel's lies, she battled and eventually killed her along with Eugene's help, just to go to Corona to the arms of her mother and father.

Tangled: Before Ever After[]

The king is extremely happy Rapunzel's back, and increases at an extreme level her protection, ordering a horde of guards to go with her wherever she is to protect her for any potential threats, and also said that she couldn't go beyond Corona's walls, all while he prepared himself for her daughter's upcoming coronation, to become an official princess, that was going to be soon. When Cassandra, Rapunzel's lady-in-waitress and best friend, help her get out to explore the world outside Corona's walls, Rapunzel touched some strange black rocks, that unknowning to her, were connected with the Moonstone, and they awakened the Sundrop powers inside her, which made her hair, that was previously cut to defeat Mother Gothel, grow to the length of 70ft and become blond again. She needed to prevent her father from finding that out, as he wouldn't even let her get out of the castle, or maybe even her bedroom, and would send, Cassandra, who helped her, to an convent.

At the day of the coronation, moments before Rapunzel got the official title of princess, Lady Caine along with her criminal gang, broke into the party, and ordered her minions to lock all royals in a car where they would be send to an unknown place where Rapunzel would never see her father again, while explaining why she wanted revenge on the royals, because of King Frederic's actions of arresting indiscriminately all of the criminals. Rapunzel took down Caine and her minions with the help of Cassandra, Eugene, but revealed her hair to her father in the process, who remembered the rocks from Quirin's warning years ago, but didn't tell nothing to her, but said that she couldn't leave Corona ever, leaving his daughter in tears.
