War is full of uncertainty.
~ Harrow to Callum.
You never gave her that choice!
~ Harrow to Avizandum after the latter gave him mercy.

King Harrow is one of the two overarching protagonists (alongside Zubeia) of Netflix‘s The Dragon Prince franchise.

He was the King of Katolis before he was assinanted off-screen by Runnan. He was Sarai's widow and the father of her 2nd biological child/heir, Prince Ezran, who would later go on to succeed him as king of Katolis. He is also the step-father of Callum.

He was voiced by Luc Roderique.

Biograpahy[]

Around a year before the death of his father and his cornation, Harrow met Sarai who was recently widowed, something that caused Harrow to be reluctant to propose to her until his friend Viren convinced him to. They fell in love and got married making him Callum's step-father.

At least a few months shortly before Harrow's coronation, Sarai became pregnant with Harrow's biological child. However this didn't change the way he loved Callum who loved as if he were also his biological child. Around a year after Ezran's birth, The two Queens of Duren, Annika and Neha arrived at Katolis, to ask King Harrow for a favor.

The Kingdom of Duren as been going through a seven year famine which has gotten worse since it was currently winter. Harrow agreed to give them some of their food despite knowing full will that it would cause his subjects to starve. Even though they worked hard to grow enough food for the winter would have likely led to huge unrest in the country, once the peasants of Katolis found out their king decided to give away the food they worked hard to grow, and now their children would die of starvation.

Viren not wanting their people to suffer, or to see a revolution, convinced Harrow to lead an expedition party into Xadia to kill a Magma Titan in order to loot it's heart. That way, Viren can use it to create a warm climate for Duren.

That way the only living thing that suffers is a sole Magma Titan rather then thousands of people. However Queen Sarai didn't agree with this plan because even though it's better than letting thousands of innocent people go hungry, Viren's strategy involved to use of murder of an innocent sentient creature and Dark Magic, which is notorious of killing the creatures the user poaches for their essence and is a short-cut (Meaning it's not a true power).

Sarai warned Harrow the consequences of being too reliant on Dark Magic. But Harrow having already making up his mind, takes Viren's advice anyways and leads an expedition party consisting of himself, Viren, Amaya, The Queens of Duren and several unnamed soldiers.

Sarai decides to join the expedition party despite her views on Dark Magic because she knew that even if she stayed in the castle with her sons, Harrow would kill the Magma Titan anyway and she wanted to be with her husband. After the expedition, the kingdoms were saved, but Sarai and the queens of Duren died during it because of Avizandum.

Harrow would grow to hate the dragon for the murder of his wife, but understood that he couldn't get revenge on him since it would put the world in war. One day, Viren would give him the chance to get revenge by creating a weapon that would be able to kill Avizandum, while Harrow initially refused, his need for revenge proved to still be deep inside him, so Harrow killed the dragon with the help of Viren, although unlike the latter, Harrow took no joy in the act.

Viren would then discover that Avizandum had an egg which he was protecting, so he suggested that they should destroy it, to which Harrow reluctantly agrees after Viren convinces the former that the hatchlingwould want revenge against humanity for his father's death if it hatched. However, Viren would keep it to study it in his dungeon.

Over the years, Harrow would grow to feel remorse for his actions, since not only caused Moon Shadow assassins to come to kill him out of revenge, but also because he caused a unwinnable war between elves, dragons, and humans. He wrote a letter to Callum to not make the mistakes he did when he grows up.

Before he died, he refused to use Dark Magic and cowardly use it to survive the Moon Shadow elves' attack, dying as a king by staying in his castle as the assassins killed him. Viren would then try to usurp his place, but overall failed to thanks to Amaya, Opeli, and Ezran. Two years after his death, Callum would go to honor his father in a statue made in his memory during a ceremony Ezran made to celebrate Zubeia's appearance in Katolis.

Harrow would also appear in Viren's hallucinations after he used dark magic fro the first time after his revival, where he told Viren that he always saw him as family. Viren told Harrow while crying that what Harrow said was all he ever wanted, as it proved that he mattered. Harrow's hallucination would then tell Viren that he appretiated him because "his soul was his treasure" before turning Viren into a cursed coin.

Personality[]

Harrow was a nice and benevolent king, who loved his family deeply, and would do the best he could to help others. Harrow also had a dark sense of humor, joking that he would have Viren executed if he ever entered in his room while he was sleeping. However, his selflessness was proven to be one of his greatest flaws, as he gave the people of Duren half of Katolis' food suply after he heard that they were passing through a famine, which also caused Katolis to suffer from the famine as well. This would lead to Harrow look for a solution to the famine, and he accepted Viren's suggestion of going to Xadia and kill a magma titan, and when his wife Sarai tried to convince him that it was wrong, Harrow still refused to stop.

After Sarai's death, Harrow would become resentful towards Avizandum for the murder of his wife, and when Viren told him of a way to kill Avizandum, while Harrow initially refused out of fear it could end the peace between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms, Harrow's desire of vengeance proved to be stronger than his morals, although when he actually committed the deed, Harrow was regretful over what he had done.

By the time he reached his final days, Harrow understood that the things he did were horrible, and accepted being killed by the Moonshadow Elves that were sent to assassinate him. He also came to understand how selfish and prideful Viren truly was, and told him that he was no better than anyone else and he wasn't above the law, and that he was a servant of Katolis.

Skills and Abilites[]

Combatant []

Harrow was a skilled fighter when he was still alive. He also a skilled military leader as he led the attack on the Moonshadow Elves domain.

Leadership[]

Due to ruling Katolis for around a decade, Harrow was very experience in ruling his kingdom with benevolence. Although he was not very wise, as he was willing to allow his own people, who worked hard to grow food for the winter to starve so that the neighboring kingdom of Durin had food, even though they did not plan well. While that may seem like a kindness, it would be the peasants of his kingdom that starved, not Harrow himself, and he did not have the right to give away his kingdoms store of food. This mistake is what started the chain of problems that led to a war with Xadia. He was also willing to put his personal revenge ahead of the peace of his kingdom, so while he had a good heart, Harrow was not a very good king.

He was a very good parent, and raised his sons to be much wiser then he was, so parenting could be counted as one of his great skills.
