I know how it can feel in this... circus. Sometimes it all just feels... pointless. But it's not. Not if you have people that care about you. Good memories can do a lot. Hold on to them. And cherish the people around you. You never know when they'll be gone... In this world the worst thing you can do is, make someone think they're not wanted or loved.

The way I see it, relationships are two sided, and sometimes, it doesn't make sense to do all the heavy lifting when the other isn't in the mood. We all go through and deal with things differently, and sometimes, you just need to let people do things their own way. As long as you're still there when they need you. Giving someone space should never be the same as giving up on them... Do you hate yourself?... I hated myself. I couldn't help but hate myself for the things I thought I was responsible for. I thought I'd lost everything. But then... you showed up. And my outlook just... changed. There are always ways to show you care without ruining it for yourself over it. You need to look out for yourself in all this, too.

~ Kinger consoling Ragatha about her insecurities.
He is the first human to be trapped in the Digital Realm (of the main cast, at least) and as a result, tends to act mentally unstable and skittish. Despite this, Kinger is genuinely kind-hearted and is rather compassionate to his fellow humans.
What makes Kinger act mentally unstable in The Amazing Digital Circus?
Kinger acts mentally unstable in The Amazing Digital Circus because he has witnessed many disappearances and abstractions of humans in the Circus. Being the first human trapped there, these events have made him paranoid and skittish, though he remains kind-hearted.

How does Kinger's compassion influence his role in the Digital Realm?
Kinger's compassion shapes his role in the Digital Realm by driving him to support others despite his own challenges. His intelligence helps him understand the mental states of characters like Pomni and Kaufmo, and he shares his knowledge of the Digital Circus with others. This makes him a valuable, supportive presence, even as he grapples with his own instability.

What challenges does Kinger face as the first human in the Digital Realm?
Kinger, the first human in the Digital Realm, struggles with mental instability from prolonged isolation. He is intelligent and knowledgeable about the Digital Circus, yet remains nervous and frantic, often seeking refuge in a pillow fort. Despite these challenges, he is eager to assist others.

Appearance[]
As per his namesake, Kinger takes the form of a tall, anthropomorphic white king chess piece made of wood. He has two round, teal, hyper-realistic eyes that are lopsided and he has white cartoon gloves for hands. Kinger wears a purple robe with a white fur trim that has brown spots.
Personality[]
As a result of being trapped in the Digital Realm for many years, Kinger tends to be extremely frantic and nervous at all times, being on edge even when there's no reason to be scared around and as such constantly hides in his pillow fort. Kinger also seems to be quite mentally unstable as he falsely thinks his pillow fort is impenetrable and seems to be somewhat of an amnesiac, forgetting things rather quickly and screaming in surprise after forgetting people are next to him and realizing they're present.
Despite this, Kinger is very polite, noble and compassionate, being affable to even the Gloink Queen and showing a degree of willingness to help despite his slight incompetence. While he is very forgetful, silly, and absent-minded, Kinger is also rather fairly intelligent as he was able to deduce Pomni and Kaufmo's mental instabilities, and also seems highly familiar with the inner workings of the Digital Circus, being eager to share his knowledge with the other humans. He also is quite wise, comforting Ragatha when she worries over Pomni and assures her that whatever she's going through is natural as a part of adjusting to the Circus (heck, Kinger even shows much potential at being a better therapist than Caine ever could).
Later on, it's revealed that Kinger's insanity stems from him struggling to cope with the abstraction of his wife, Queenie, and that his senile behavior is a result of only being able to remember things in the dark. In this state, he is demonstrated to be incredibly wise and socially intelligent, comforting Pomni and giving her assurance that the most important thing in the Circus is making each other feel needed and loved, making her regain confidence in herself. His intelligence also seems enhanced in this state as he is able to solve puzzles with little to no difficulty, deducing the hints in the Baron's riddle and takes advantage of his body's detachable parts to scout out the area.
Heroic Acts[]
Trying to help freeing Zooble and holding their detachable head once the adventure was over.
Trying to retrieve Gangle's mask that Jax threw (despite stringing Pomni with him accidentally).
Defending Pomni from the Creature by wielding a gun and shooting it.
Comforting Pomni in her stressed state and working with Pomni to leave a maze together by holding their breaths, thus helping her gain her confidence and make it out of the maze together.
Trying to help Pomni with defusing a bomb based on what wire to cut on top of discussing ways to handle the New Zealand and Australia war.
Restoring Ragatha's missing life by using magic and clapping his hands to conjure an artificial butterfly during the gunfight adventure.
Confronting both Pomni and Jax in a dark hallway and almost defeating them until shooting and defeating himself with his ricochet move.
Comforting Ragatha when she felt that her relationship with Pomni and others estranged.
Relationships[]
Kinger is shown to most characters as a crazy old man who always spouts nonsense. However, when his true personality is revealed to those he cares about, their perspective of him completely changes. So, although Kinger doesn't have much close relationships but, the ones he does have are true and unique compared to most of the others'.
Queenie[]
“
She was funny, creative...really into entomology. I used to hate bugs, but...she somehow got me to like them.
„
~ Kinger talks about his wife with Pomni
Kinger and Queenie's last moments together
Queenie was Kinger's wife, who unfortunately abstracted before the series began. Before her transformation, Kinger and Queenie were in a happy relationship. Kinger thought Queenie as funny, creative and beautiful, and she even helped him overcome his distaste over insects. Prior to her imprisonment, she was with Kinger in their pillow fortress. Unlike Kaufmo, she seemed to calm down, recognizing her husband within the dark. This allowed Kinger to touch her lovingly for the last time(without getting Jumbled), before Caine sent her to the cellar. Even after her abstraction, Kinger is deeply impacted by Queenie as that memory of their final moment together is the primary reason that he hadn't abstracted, serving as an anchor that restores his sanity and memory whenever he drifts toward darkness.
I couldn't help but hate myself for the things I was responsible for... but then... you showed up. And my outlook just...changed.
„
~ Kinger reveals that Ragatha helped his mental state when she arrived.
"You wanna talk about it?"
Ragatha is the character that Kinger interacted with the most thus far, and they are on great terms, especially after the events of episode 6. As of "They Get Guns", Kinger revealed that he only remembers Ragatha's arrival to the circus accurately (or at least he only talks about it over the other's backstories). This is because her positive outlook upon their situation allowed Kinger to move on from the hate he had for himself, potentially saving himself from abstraction. They continue to casually interact, until episode 6, when Ragatha becomes Kinger's teammate during the newest adventure. During the adventure, Kinger allows Ragatha a fair chance to play(by conjuring a healing butterfly), and he also emotionally talks with Ragatha after they lose. During this conversation, Kinger revealed Ragatha's significance towards his mental state, and that he doesn't hate her like she thought he did. By the end, Ragatha felt better about herself and became impressed by Kinger's remarkable speaking.
Don't worry about me. (He gets up) As long as you remember it, things will be okay. You're very strong, Pomni. And I know you'll be able to get through this. Just hold onto me. We'll get through it together. You ready?
„
~ Kinger comforting Pomni in her current predicament.
Pomni: "I'm glad you're here with me."
After Jax throws Gangle's comedy mask into the scary door, Kinger went to get it, accidentally tagging Pomni along with him as he was holding her popped out eyes. The moment they get into the scary room, he started to adjust to his sanity due to the dark environment. Initially Pomni being annoyed with him, she later started to feel comfortable at his sudden sane behavior. Later, when they learned that they have been tricked by Baron Mildenhall into killing the Angel so that they can be dragged to Hell, Pomni briefly gets possessed by the souls and Kinger hits her to let her free of them. Pomni started to have a mental breakdown, with the surety that Caine wants her to suffer, Kinger comforts her. Pomni asks Kinger about his sudden sane behavior, and Kinger tells her about his wife and the latter's abstraction, and how this memory let him be sane in dark moments. Kinger also reassures her that being in the circus was not entirely pointless, as long someone has people who care about the others, and cherish happy memories between them. Afterwards, Kinger suggested Pomni they hold their breath to get out of the adventure. Pomni fears he'll go back to being crazy after leaving the adventure and forget their moments, but Kinger reassures her and together they leave the adventure by holding their breath (with Kinger glowing magnificently). After getting out, Kinger went back to his usual self. This moment meant so much to Pomni as she would often reference this event when talking about Kinger's reliability.
—Zooble gets mad at Kinger for not taking her head away from the Glonks.
During the pilot episode, Kinger(Alongside Gangle) would have the responsibility of finding Zooble after they was taken to Gloink Queen. Unfortunately Kinger, due to his mental state would fail in this endeavor because he didn't realize he could bring the head toward him. Although after Kaufmo pushed the head out of the Gloink Queen's stomach, he would remain careful of it before Zooble could reattach it to their body. Also they would make a comment about Kinger abstracting instead of Kaufmo(although Zooble meant it without any offense), but Kinger took it as a compliment, politely thanking Zooble instead of questioning them.

I'm normally not too good with memories. But being surrounded by darkness always… brings me back to a certain time. Right after my wife had… had abstracted… I don't recall the exact string of events, but we both ended up in the fort together. And it was dark. The darkness seemed to calm her down a bit. The harsh, jagged edges smoothed out, and she didn't seem aggravated anymore. She wasn’t the same as before, but she was calm enough to touch one last time… before she got sent to the cellar.

Trivia[]
Based on his 3D model, Kinger is the tallest character in the Digital Circus, standing at nearly twice Pomni's height.
Thanks to being stuck the longest in the Circus, Kinger is also the oldest character at 48 years old.
Kinger asking Zooble if they "saw a game show" in the Gloink Queen's stomach is a reference to the recurring game show "Gastric Giveaway" that appears in numerous animations by the show's creator Gooseworx, often making an appearance in the gullet of a character.
In the scene where the room of each human is shown, a room with a black queen chess piece is shown with her face crossed out. This character, whose name was revealed to be Queenie, was also revealed to be Kinger's romantic partner via Gooseworx's tumblr and that her disappearance may have caused his unstable nature. Furthermore, as the Queen is often used as a last resort to save the King, Queenie may have died saving Kinger from something which led to his cowardly nature.
Despite this, it's noted that Queenie is a black piece while Kinger is a white piece, which are opposing sides in chess. However, this contrasting coloration could just be for the sake of character design and to help better distinguish Queenie from Kinger.
Kinger's skittish personality may be a reference to the playstyle of the king chess piece, as it being captured spells defeat for the player and as such, the king piece must be defended at all costs.
Kinger's tendency to hide in his pillow fort may also represent the move of castling, in which a player protects their unmoved king by swapping its position with an unmoved rook, moving the king two spaces horizontally in the process.
Thanks to numerous details in the show, it's been theorized that Kinger was once a computer programmer who had a hand in making the Digital Circus itself:
Kinger seems obsessed with insect collections, with insects also being called bugs. As Kinger's memory seems deteriorated, this may be a foggy memory of him debugging the Circus when it was still in its development.
It's later revealed that Kinger's obsession with bugs is actually something he got from his wife as she convinced him to like them.
The flooring of the Circus has a chessboard pattern, which may have a connection with Kinger's appearance being a chess piece.
Kinger takes the form of a king chess piece, the most important piece in the game, which could indicate a role of significant importance in his past life. Furthermore, he and Queenie are the only humans not to take the appearance of toys but rather board game pieces, implying a level of sophistication and intelligence.
Because of this, he considers himself to be royal to a degree, such as when he talks to the Gloink Queen.
Kinger also remarks about taking seven years of computer science in the third episode, adding more implications that he was once a programmer.
Finally, Kinger's design is also rather simplistic compared with the other characters. This, along with his tendency to ragdoll and glitch may display that he was added to the game when its rendering capabilities were still rather limited, such as during its development phase.
He is the second major Glitch Productions character to be voiced by someone who works at Nintendo as character voice actor, Sean Chiplock, with the latter having previously voiced Thad in Murder Drones.
Appropriate to his appearance, Kinger can play chess, though his level of skill at the game hasn’t been revealed as of yet.
Out of all the circus members, Kinger is notably targeted by Jax's mischief the least. This is likely on account of Kinger being insane and not understanding anything making it hard for Jax to get a rise out of him.
On that note, Kinger is the only one among the main cast who has yet to get angry or even exasperated once.
As revealed in an ad for plushies of the series’s characters, Kinger has a fantastic singing voice.
Kinger regaining his sanity in the dark is is foreshadowed multiple times before and during episode 3.
When Ragatha is worried that Pomni is having a horrible time on their adventure in episode 2, Kinger comforts her. During this, he has a bucket on his head, and forgets everything he said the moment he takes it off.
Kinger closes his eyes during his eulogy for Kaufmo.
When Kinger gets into the dark part of the Mildenhall Manor, he tells Pomni "I'm starting to think---", but stops halfway through his sentence.
On the topic of merchandise ads, Kinger acknowledges and is put off by the fact that his plushie "looks pregnant" in the eyes of the fans.
As the abstraction-themed socks sold by Glitch are called the "Checkmate Socks" and have Kinger and Queenie's robe colors as their secondary colors, it's possible that this is a foreshadowing that Kinger will inevitably abstract at some point.
