Kinuho Wannai and Maaya Awatsuki are supporting characters in the A Certain Scientifc Railgun series, a spin-off of the A Certain Magical Index franchise.
A pair of Level 3 espers in Tokiwadai's swimming team who hang around with Mitsuko Kongou, the two are never seen apart and are vitually indistinguishable in terms of personality. While they mostly play relatively minor roles, they prove to be steadfast allies to Mikoto Misaka and friends.
Kinuho is voiced by Haruka Tomatsu and Kristi Kang and later Amanda Gish in English, while Maaya is voiced by Yoshino Nanjō in Japanese and Tia Ballard in English.
Appearances[]
They are both teenage girls of the same age who wear the standard Tokiwadai uniform. Kinuho has short wavy light-brown hair & blue eyes and Maaya has dark-bluish hair and eyes. Their bust sizes are large enough for Mikoto Misaka to show envy over.
Personalities[]
They are both kind, caring, and considerate individuals who are forgiving of people's flaws and don't look down on others because of lower esper levels. They are shown to be respectful towards a senpai and hold great admiration for Mitsuko Kongou, easily befriending her even after she had previously lied to them about being able to cook curry.
Kinuho herself can become quite timid whenever she's around men and usually relies on Maaya for emotional support. While generally non-confrontational and easygoing, Kinuho and Maaya can become angered if their friends are harmed or insulted, as seen in the case with Yoshio Baba, who had just beaten up Kongou and called her trash. Although they aren't arrogant in anyway, the duo demonstrate enough confidence in their own abilities to assist Mikoto Misaka whenever she finds herself in trouble.
Biography[]
Their backgrounds aren't fully known, but it can be assumed that they have been together for a while. Kinuho and Maaya are both students of the prestigious Tokiwadai Middle School and are members of the school's swimming team. They are also classmates of Kuroko Shirai.
When Kinuho transferred into Tokiwadai, she was harassed by delinquents and was too afraid to do anything, she was however saved by Mikoto Misaka.

Wannai and Awatsuki are both Level 3 espers with two different abilities:
- Hydro Hand: Wannai's esper power which allows her to manipulate water, with her limit being around 300 liters at once. She's able to control up to 4 water clumps at the same time. If water is too scattered she cannot control it. She cannot reform a clump from lost water and she will need to retrieve more water from another source. Kinuho doesn't need to see water to control it, as shown when she manipulated water that was drained by a robot to destroy its insides or a clump of water that she kept moving underground during her fight with Yoshio Baba and his robots. She has shown to be able to produce a small water sprout, small water bullets, a small stream of water that destroyed the deck of a small wooden bridge and slammed a Type: Great Dane, long clumps/whips of water to bash and destroy several Type: Great Dane (a type of robot dogs) and to block their attacks, and a small sphere of water surrounding an opponent's head.
- Float Dial: Awatsuki's esper power which allows her to manipulate the buoyancy of herself and her surroundings. This enables Maaya to make objects lighter, telekinetically lift heavy things, walk on water without breaking its surface tension, and leap several feet into the air. She can also use it upon being approached by an enemy to make them float harmlessly through the air and alter their trajectory, causing them to miss her. With enough concentration, she can apply her power in an object so that its weight is reduced for a short while, even when she's no longer close to it. Another use is to cause flying objects such as Baba Toshio's Type:Mosquitoes to fall to the ground by bringing the buoyancy around them to zero and stopping them from gaining enough lift.

Trivia[]
- Wannai's Japanese voice actress (Haruka Tomatsu) and Awatsuki's English voice actress (Tia Ballad) both voice Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx.
- They both make several cameo appearances in the mainline Index series, ranging from the manga adaptation to the color illustrations in the light novels.
- According to Railgun editor Kentarou Ogino, Kinuho's bust size is 80 and Maaya's bust size is 85.
