Dad, I know you think I'm crazy, but I feel her. Eywa. I hear her breathing. I hear her heartbeat. She's so close. She's just there. Like a word about to be spoken.
~ Kiri explaining her connection of Eywa to Jake.
Thank you, Great Mother! Thank you...
~ Kiri

Kiri te Suli Kìreysì'ite is a major character in the Avatar franchise, serving as one of the three deuteragonists in the 2022 film Avatar The Way of Water. She is the adoptive daughter of Neytiri and Jake Sully who was born from Dr. Grace Augustine's avatar body. Her birth and link to Eywa are a complete mystery, even to herself.

She is voiced and portrayed by Sigourney Weaver, who played her biological mother in the original film, Ellen Ripley from the Alien franchise, Dana Barrett in the Ghostbusters films, and Ripley 8 in Alien: Resurrection, while her younger self is voiced by Scarlet Hernandez.

History[]

Background[]

Kiri te Suli Kìreysì'ite was born on Pandora in 2155 or 2156 through Grace Augustine's avatar body, which was rendered brain-dead after Grace had passed away. Kiri's biological father, if she had any, remains unknown. Jake and Neytiri adopted the child soon after. Since she and her adoptive brother Neteyam were both born at the same time, they simultaneously received a connection to Eywa in front of the entire Omatikaya Clan.

Growing up in the clan, Kiri had two other siblings, Lo'ak and Tuktirey. She also befriended a human boy, Miles Soccoro, who she grew up closely with and considered him to be another brother.

Avatar: The Way of Water[]

Personality[]

At an early age, Kiri displayed a close connection to Eywa and the wildlife of Pandora. As a child, she easily tamed a banshee by simply asking it to be her friend instead of using the direct approach and easily adapted to life at sea with the Metkayina clan. She is also very curious, wondering why she is different from the other Na'vi, including her mysterious connection with Eywa and the identity of her biological father, if she has any. However, she is close to her adoptive family, showing concern for them when the RDA ship begins sinking. She also feels a close spiritual connection to her biological mother, Grace, despite never meeting her. Like Grace, she has a love for botany and wears her mother's necklace from the previous film. She also watches her mother's video logs and often visited Grace's suspended avatar body in its tank.

Kiri felt like an outsider among her family because she possessed human traits such as five fingers and a pair of eyebrows.

Powers and abilities[]

Even at a young age, Kiri developed a strong attachment to Eywa. When she was a child, Kiri simply walked up to a banshee and asked it to be her friend, which worked. When the family moved to join the Metkayina clan, Kiri adapted to the life at sea faster than her siblings, easily bonding with an Ilu. She later put this to use by directing the creatures of the sea to help rescue her family from drowning when the RDA warship was going down.

Like her mother, Kiri was a talented botanist, as she easily helped her grandmother Mo'at decide which herbs to use to heal her brother's injuries.

Trivia[]

  • During the events of the sequel, Kiri is fourteen years old.
  • To get Kiri's facial expressions right,  Weta assembled photos of Sigourney Weaver as a teenager and watched her early movies to give themselves a feel for how her face moved at a younger age.
