Kiriya Ubuyashiki is a major character in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba franchise.
He is the only son of Kagaya and Amane Ubuyashiki, the younger brother of Hinaki and Nichika, and the older brother of Kunia and Kanata Ubuyashiki.
Following his father's sacrifice to weaken Muzan Kibutsuji, Kiriya becomes the 98th leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, leading them and the Hashira in the final battle against Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki. With the eventual death of Muzan, Kiriya is ultimately the last leader of the Demon Slayer Corps.
He is voiced by Aoi Yūki in the Japanese version and by Christine Marie Cabanos in the English version.
Appearance[]
Kiriya has light, pale skin and large eyes. Just like the rest of his sisters, he has a blunt bob with a fringe, but instead of the white hair of all the female members of the family, he has the black hair of the rest of male members.
Since he was raised as a female for the first years of his life, he weared a purlpe kimono with flowers and a green obi as well as a wisteria hairpin in his head. He also uses lipstick and eyebrow pen. After he assumes the role of leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, he gets rid of his female identity and therefore, he wears a black kimono and his father's inherited haori.
Personality[]
During his first appearance during the Final Selection, Kirya doesn't seem to show any kind of emotion, acting polite, indifferent and centered instead.
After assuming the role of leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, he shows a more emotional face, being evidently saddened by his father, mother and sisters' death, but he doesn't change his centered personality, as he prioritizes the defeat of Muzan Kibutsuji. He also shows to have an excellent memory, since he alongside his sisters, Kuina and Kanata, were able to graph a perfect map of the Infinity Castle.
However, he also shows a vulnerable side of himself, since after his orders end up in multiple Demon Slayers being brutally murdered by Muzan, he breaks under stress and neglects his leadership for a while, feeling guilty and thinking he's not able before being pulling back to himself thanks to Kuina.
Trivia[]
- He, Yushiro and Chachamaru are the only pre-timeskip characters still alive after the timeskip.
- Out of them, he is the only character who is human. This was to demonstrate that after Muzan Kibutsuji's defeat, the curse put on Ubuyashiki Family that killed every male member at a young age disappeared.
- The reason why Kiriya was raised as a girl came from a tradition in Ubuyashiki Family where the heirs of the leadership of the Demon Slayer Corps role were raised as females in their first years of life in order to protect them of the Demons.
- It's also theorized that another reason behind this is to prevent the curse from affecting male members in the family.
