That was fan-tastic!
~ Kitana’s pun.
General Shao’s revolt left Outworld’s armies in tatters. We were vulnerable to enemies both foreign and domestic. That’s why my sister asked me to take command. To stitch her military back together and purge Shao’s loyalists within it. She trusted only me with the task. The soldiers, however, had little faith. They thought me a spoiled dilettante, unprepared and unfit to serve. That I could fight mattered little. All that mattered was that I wasn’t one of them. I finally earned their loyalty by orchestrating an epic victory over Shao and his rebels. Though the general himself escaped, his forces were smashed. For as long as I am able, I will lead the empress’ armies in defense of Outworld. Through strength, we will achieve peace.
~ Kitana narrating her arcade ending.

Princess Kitana is a major character in Mortal Kombat 1. She is a Princess of Outworld. who serves her mother and later serves her sister, Mileena.

She is voiced by Kari Wahlgren, who also voiced Kitana's sister, Mileena, in the same game.

Biography[]

Kitana, born to King Jerrod and Empress Sindel, is the younger twin sister of Mileena, the designated heir to the throne of Outworld. In contrast to her rebellious and tomboyish sister, Kitana embodies a more straight-laced and feminine demeanor, taking her role as princess seriously. The favoritism she receives from certain Outworlders as the preferable heir intensifies the rift between the sisters.

Despite external perceptions, Kitana harbors no interest in claiming the throne, displaying unwavering loyalty to her sister. Frequently admonishing Mileena for actions jeopardizing her rule, Kitana is one of the few aware of her sister's Tarkatan disease, deepening the complexities of their relationship.

As the Mortal Kombat tournament unfolds, Kitana, alongside her sister and Tanya, welcomes Earthrealmers to Outworld. A banquet follows, with Kitana engaging in conversation and flirtation with Johnny Cage. However, her concern for Mileena's health prompts her to replace her in the tournament, causing discontent. A subsequent defeat by Earthrealm's champion, Raiden, ensues, with mutual admiration for their fighting skills.

Journeying to Shang Tsung's laboratory with her sister, Kitana witnesses the events transpiring inside. Amid battles and revelations, she agrees to reveal the incident to Empress Sindel, triggering preparations for war with Earthrealm. The throne room becomes a battleground during Liu Kang's entreaty, as Kitana, Mileena, and Tanya clash with the Earthrealmers. The manifestation of Mileena's disease endangers Sindel, leading to Li Mei's intervention and a subsequent confrontation with Shang Tsung.

The narrative unfolds further as the combined forces of Earthrealm and Outworld travel to the Ying Fortress, exposing the alternate Shang Tsung's role as the mastermind. A fatal wound befalls Empress Sindel at the hands of her dark counterpart, propelling Mileena to ascend as the new Empress. The heroes escape the awakening Dragon Army and strategize in the foothills outside the fortress.

In a multidimensional twist, an alternate Kitana, a Titaness counterpart, joins the narrative. Liu Kang reveals the timeline's divergence due to Kronika's Hourglass, leading to alliances and confrontations across timelines. Assembling the Union of Light, they march to Shang Tsung's timeline, engaging in a second Battle of Armageddon atop an imposing pyramid. The diverse amalgamations of Kitana, including an evil Kitana Kahn, partake in the climactic clash. Kitana is a selectable character in the final chapter, and if selected, she fights her way to the top of the Pyramid, (at one point being rescued by the Titan counterpart), and aids Liu Kang in defeating the Titan Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. Following the resolution, the current Kitana remains in Outworld, appointed as the commander of the army under Mileena's rule. Despite initial doubts about her skills, a decisive victory over General Shao's renegade battalion solidifies Kitana's role in defending Outworld for her people's sake.
