~ Kiyotaka Ishimaru |
Kiyotaka Ishimaru (石丸 清多夏 Ishimaru Kiyotaka) is one of the characters featured in Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc.
His talent is the Ultimate Moral Compass.
Kiyotaka was manipulated into going into the Art Storage Room with a claim of an escape route found in the school by Hifumi, who in turn was manipulated by Celestia Ludenberg, as a part of a murder ploy set up by her. He was bludgeoned in the back of the head by Hifumi with Justice Hammer #4, killing him instantly.
In the game, he is voiced by Kōsuke Toriumi in the Japanese version of the game, and by Sean Chiplock in the English version of the game.
In the anime, he is voiced by Kōsuke Toriumi in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Austin Tindle in the English version of the anime.
Appearance[]
Kiyotaka has short spiky black hair and very large matching eyebrows. He has intense red eyes. In some official art, he is shown to be very muscular.
He wears white uniform with five golden buttons on each sleeve and six on his chest, a red and gold medal on his chest, a red armband with the kanji (風紀 fūki) meaning “Public Morals”, and knee-high black lace-up boots.
The kanji character adorning the lapel of his shirt, 参, actually represents a verb read as 参る mairu which means either "to be defeated", "to be annoyed", "to be madly in love" or "to visit a shrine/grave".
As Kiyondo, his appearance is mostly the same but his hair is pure white and his eyes have a red glowing aura to them.
Personality[]
As the Ultimate Moral Compass, Kiyotaka is righteous and values order and rules above all else. He takes his role as a student very seriously, getting upset when he has no classes to go to during the Killing School Life. He also apparently owns 10 sets of the same uniform just to make sure he never runs out and can wear one every day of the year, even on holidays or days off from school.
Because of his grandfather's tragedy, he prioritizes effort above much else. Being such a hard worker, he believes that one can achieve anything through enough of it. However, he views those who label themselves "geniuses" his enemies, because they don't understand the true value of effort. He also sees people who resort to violence easily as cowards. Described as "enthusiastic to the point of being mad", Kiyotaka believes that every action one commits must have some sort of purpose and he despises the idea of wasting time.
Fitting his talent, Kiyotaka views himself as and acts as a leader, being the one in charge of arranging the morning meetings among the students. However, his extreme dedication to studying and proper conduct to the point where he can barely hold a "normal" conversation with another person renders him difficult to be taken seriously. Very expressive and intense in his manner of speech, he's almost always yelling when he talks. He's quick to burst out the first thing that comes to his mind and try to impose his values and beliefs on others due to his poor skills at social interactions, something he feels greatly ashamed of. It is implied that his occasional insensitivity towards others is due to the lack of social interaction he's experienced in his life.
Nevertheless, Kiyotaka is loyal to and cares deeply for his classmates. He is willing to take pragmatic approaches for the sake of preventing killings among them, such as offering to have everyone reveal their secrets to each other in order to avoid Monokuma's second incentive, starting with himself and naively thinking during the first killer would raise their hand and reveal themself to avoid a class trial from taking place.
In spite of his confident and authoritative exterior, Kiyotaka suffers from low-self esteem and is secretly rather sensitive, sometimes bursting into tears in response to fear or joy. He secretly wishes he could make friends and have someone to talk to, but worries about the notion of being a nuisance to others, as he is stated to overreact to just about everything. He can be naive from time to time and is slow-witted, as he is sometimes slower to figure things out than the other students and is rather easy to trick.
One of his more unique traits is his belief that "when the body is naked, so is the soul", meaning that showing each other their naked bodies helps two men form a mutual trust. Bonds between men mean a lot to Kiyotaka, as shown during one of his Free Time Events where he asks Makoto to bathe with him in an attempt for the two to become closer as friends.
After the death of his first and best friend, Mondo, Kiyotaka is left in a state of shock and is rendered completely speechless and unresponsive. Following his adoption of the personality of Kiyondo, he becomes more aggressive, prone to anger, and extremely protective of Alter Ego, whom he sees as his Bro. He uses more aggressive language that never becoming vulgar however (though it does in the Japanese version). However, he still sees himself as the Ultimate Moral Compass, mentioning himself that he wouldn't perform criminal activities.
