If he was so interested in the Survey Corps, it would’ve been nice if he’d helped us out a bit more.
~ Klaus regarding Grisha Yeager.

Klaus is a minor character of the manga and anime Attack on Titan, he was a soldier of the Survey Corps who classified as a Team Leader, but’s unknown which Squad Leader he used to work under. He fought during the Battle of Shiganshina District to retake Wall Maria, where he would also be in charge of leading the new recruits, he was during that same battle killed by the Beast Titan.

In Japanese, he was voiced by Tōru Nara, who also voiced Koslow in the same anime. In English, he was voiced by Ben Phillips.

Appearance[]

Klaus appeared to be a middle-aged man with short brown hair (blonde in the manga) that bulged in the middle, as well as having brown eyes. He used to wear the standard Survey Corps uniform, but in his civilian clothing, would wear a simple white button-up shirt and wore dark colored pants.

Personality[]

Klaus appeared to be a sincere yet sarcastic man, like when he sardonically noted that Grisha Yeager should’ve helped them out more during the discussion with the other officers. It’s assumed that he was very trustworthy as a soldier, considering that he was Team Leader and was in control of the new recruits, showing his responsibility in the Survey Corps.

Story[]

Background[]

Klaus was presumably one of the senior soldiers of the Survey Corps. Meaning that he partook in multiple expeditions. He would also eventually acquire the title of Team Leader.

Return to Shiganshina arc[]

Klaus was seen being present at the meeting with the remaining high ranking Survey Corps members. This included Erwin Smith, Hange Zoe, Levi Ackerman, Harold, Marlene, Dirk, and himself. As all others had died prior. They discuss the disclosures regarding Grisha Yeager and his presumed knowledge of the outside world, his bond with Keith Shadis and the Reiss family. Klaus cynically noted that if Grisha truly cared for humanity, he should’ve helped out the Survey Corps. Hange then hypothesizes that Grisha probably didn’t do that as he would be discovered by the Reiss Family, who were his main targets anyway. Erwin then states that their main objective is also to reach Grisha Yeager’s basement, to discover what exactly he has hidden there. Erwin leaves the remaining teams in the hands of Klaus, Dirk, Marlene and Harold. Klaus would also be the leader for the new recruits.

Klaus is later seen in the evening, eating the meat that Harold bought from their food savings. He watches the unrest happening together with the other superior officers but appears unbothered by it.

A day later before dawn, Klaus and the rest of the Survey Corps stands on top of the Wall in Trost District, he then notices a cheerful crowd who encourage them to for their expedition. He asks Dirk when the last time was, they ever had support like this. Dirk tells him that he can’t recount one moment, and Erwin then says that this is the first time, before he bravely begins shouting to the crowd. Klaus and everyone else go from Trost District to Wall Maria, to venture towards Shiganshina on horseback.

After reaching Shiganshina, Eren Yeager reaches the outer gate and seals it with his Titan, and Klaus with his team stay near the inner gate waiting for Eren to seal their side, while the recruits take care of the horses. But before they can accomplish the rest of their plan, the Armored and Beast Titan appear, along with a large wave of Pure Titans who transform near the outer gate inside Wall Maria. The Beast Titan launches a large boulder towards them Klause’s team, which directly falls into the inner gate. Intentionally trapping the horses inside Wall Maria. The Beast Titan then slams down its fist, causing numerous of the smaller Titans to begin running towards the horses. Erwin orders Marlene’s and Dirk’s squad to join squad Klaus so they can stop the smaller Titans from killing their only escape route. Klaus tells Erwin’s order to the recruits, claiming that they shall fight of the Titans if they come to close to the horses.

As the older members of Klause’s team begins killing the Titans, the younger recruits transport the horses to a safer location. Klaus and his team would continue eliminating most of the Titans, but out of nowhere, multiple rocks begin flying at high speed to the soldiers, completely destroying some building and kills numerous Survey Corps soldiers. The Beast Titan has started crushing rocks in its hand and then threw it at them at supersonic speed. As it continues throwing numerous volley of rocks, Klaus would be one of the many Survey Corps soldiers who got brutally shredded to pieces.

War for Paradis arc[]

Klaus is seen among the deceased Eldian soldiers remembered by Hange when she tries to convince Jean and Mikasa that their fallen comrades would not be so self-centered to the point of supporting Eren's choice to destroy the world. Hange presumably believes so due to the fact that the members of the old Survey Corps and the most selfless soldiers of the other branches believed in the overall good of humanity and were seen by society as weird and idealistic people.
