Knuckles the Echidna is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Johnny Lightfoot) of the Sonic the Comic comic book series. He is the last known Echidna on Mobius, having resided on Floating Island for as long as he can remember. He was initially deceived by Dr. Robotnik into thinking Sonic the Hedgehog was a villain, but has since cleared up the confusion and allied himself with the hedgehog.

Biography[]

Past[]

Though physically fifteen, Knuckles was actually born no less than eight millenia ago. As a warrior for the Echidna Empire, he fought to protect Mobius from the invading Drakon Empire. During the war, he met the time-travelling Sonic the Hedgehog, but would eventually forget said encounter. Long after the echidnas disappeared, Knuckles was left the only one of his kind on Mobius, having somehow survived to the present day, and guarded the Chaos Emeralds on the Floating Island, waiting for his people to return.

Sonic the Comic[]

Knuckles' first contact with the world below when Dr. Robotnik's Death Egg II crashed onto his island. The doctor lied to the echidna that he was a hero and Sonic and the Freedom Fighters were villains, turning the echidna against them. Knuckles served Robotnik for some time until he discovered that he was going to steal the power of the Chaos Emeralds for himself, and thus helped Sonic defeat the doctor.

Knuckles spent the next several months ridding the Floating Island of Robotnik's forces, and let Sonic use his asssitance a number of times, until a fateful encounter with another echidna, Dr. Zachary. Like Dr. Robotnik, Zachary pretended to be kind and helpful, but was actually plotting to destroy Mobius by crashing the Floating Island into it. Knuckles stopped him and came in possession of the remains of the doctor's Guardian Robot, who turned out to have been created by the Echidnas. The robot helped Knuckles restore the ancient mechanisms of the island, soon joined by Porker Lewis, who quit the Freedom Fighters after a traumatic experience on Miracle Planet and settled on the island.

Knuckles had gone through many more misadventures both on the Floating Island and on Mobius. He was once turned into Robotnik's servant after the latter gained omnipotence, making him fight Sonic again, but had his memories restored and depowered the mad scientist with the Grey Emerald. In the comic's final arc, the Floating Island was attacked by Chaos, forcing Knuckles to eject the Chaos Emerald off of it. As the island fell down, Knuckles intended to go down with it, but was rescued by Amy, later helping the Freedom Fighters gather the Emeralds and defeat Chaos.

Sonic the Comic Online![]

The "unofficially official" webcomic continuation would reveal the cause of Knuckles' presence in the present; it was the consequence of a deal Pochacamac made with the death god Vichama. As long as he would take one soul in exchange for Knuckles', the Floating Island's guardian would be brought back to life with the Guardian Emerald. Due to a malfunction, Knuckles lost the memory of his past life after his latest resurrection. Later, upon returning, Vichama killed Knuckles, but he was resurrected yet again, this time with memories of his latest life intact. To end the death god's omnicidal crusade, Knuckles crushed the Guardian Emerald and made him vulnerable, but also gave up his chance for eternal life.

Knuckles later drained Robotnik's Chaos Tap of its Chaos Energy, removing his trump card in the war, fought a Guardian Robot prototype, helped defeat Super Sonic, and continued his search for Dr. Zachary, only to discover that he had removed the tracking device installed into him earlier.

Alternate timeline[]

When Iblis destroyed most of Mobius, Knuckles continued to live on the Floating Island. As decades went by, he grew cynical and nihilistic. Eventually, Silver arrived to take the remaining Chaos Emeralds needed to power the time machine and took Knuckles with him as the island collapsed. When the Iblis attacked G.U.N.'s hideout, Knuckles went out to confront the beast, recognizing him as his former friend Sonic, vowing to end his villainy, though it's unlikely that he managed to put up much of a fight.

Personality[]

Knuckles is depicted as more intelligent and tech-savvy than his main series counterpart, although he can still be wrathful and get manipulated by villains due to his lack of communication with Mobius. He has a sense of honor, devotedly pursuing his dty of guarding the Chaos Emeralds and offering his assistance to Sonic to make up for fighting him. Though he's always ready to commit to heroics alongside his allies, Knuckles is still a loner at heart and prefers a company as small as possible.

Trivia[]

  • The Fleetway comics depict the crescent-shaped line on Knuckles chest as a metal necklace rather than a dash of white fur like in most continuities.
