Kotallo is one of the four deuteragonists (alongside Varl, Erend Vanguardsman and Zo) of the 2022 video game Horizon Forbidden West. Originally hailing from a splinter Tenakth tribe known as the Sky Tenkath, he serves as one of the Marshals of the Tenakth tribe, who works as Hekarro's second-in-command, before joining as one of Aloy's allies.
Following the attack in the Embassy in Barren Light, Kotallo would lose one of his arms after charging through a Bristleback, and later joins with Aloy after defeating Regalla's rebel Tenakth army from attacking the event known as the Kulrut. He joins with the Nora Huntress on the fight against Regalla and her rebels, as well as the rogue AI HEPHAESTUS and Far Zenith.
He is voiced by Noshir Dalal who also voiced Charles Smith in Red Dead Redemption 2.
Appearance[]
Kotallo is a tall man with a powerful physique. He's dressed in a woven sleeveless grey crop top and a knee-length grey skirt lined with yellow feathers, all of which are embellished with blue and yellow beads and a shoulder guard on his right shoulder.
He also has wooden beads around his neck and arm protectors on both forearms. He wraps the wound with a blue piece of cloth after losing his left arm to a charging Bristleback. His jet black hair is braided and shaved down the sides and back. His tattoos and facial paint as a Marshal are mostly white and blue with triangle motifs. Kotallo has cauliflower ears, which are most likely the consequence of a previous violent altercation.
Personality[]
Kotallo is severe and distant, devoting the majority of his time and energy to his tasks and perfecting his martial skills. In battle, his stoic demeanour is replaced with a roaring rage. This gruff appearance, however, masks an unwavering commitment to peace, sharp wit, and often lyrical insight.
Kotallo, like the rest of his tribe, sets a high importance on honour and strength, and is proud to be Tenakth, going so far in sacrificing one of his arms during Regalla's attack on the Embassy. He is often amused by people's commonalities, despite tribal and cultural differences, and is able to see the best in his allies via this lens.
Kotallo's maiming at Barren Light was a terrible blow to a tribe that valued strength above all else. Many in the tribe had lost faith in him, and he felt he was no longer worthy. He gradually accepts his affliction as a part of himself, and even after developing a prosthesis, he only uses it when absolutely necessary.
Abilities[]
Kotallo is a formidable opponent for both man and machine. During the Rout, he was the one who opened the gates of Barren Light from the east, allowing the invading Tenakth to enter. His fighting style is violent and straightforward, with a preference for close combat over archery. Kotallo has adapted to losing his arm, allowing him to ascend a mountaintop by himself and training against a flock of Sunwings.
Kotallo is a talented Machine Strike player that routinely defeats Erend in the Base outside of battle. He is the first Tenakth to learn to read thanks to his use of the Focus. He also knows enough about Tenakth history to be able to teach it to an outlander.
Trivia[]
- The model for Kotallo in the cinematic when he loses his arm was initially shown with the covering over the stub. In later versions, he is rescued from beneath the Bristleback with a bleeding wound showing.
