Kozuki Sukiyaki, also more commonly known as Tenguyama Hitetsu is a major supporting character in One Piece. Originally the Shogun of Wano, Sukiyaki is captured and imprisoned by Kurozumi Family to seize the title of Shogun, leading to him escaping and waiting for his grandchildren to return from the past. Afterwards, he reveals himself to them and offers his grandson advice to lead Wano, before heading off in seclusion again.

He is the creator of Roronoa Zoro's swords Sandai Kitetsu and Kozuki Oden sword Ame no Habakiri.

He is voiced by Ryuzaburo Otomo in Japanese Subbed and by John Burgmeirer in the Dubbed.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Sukiyaki was a strict, but concerned father for Oden, who disowned him so that Oden can be more responsible due to his future role as Shogun, while also getting irritated for his irresponsible conduct. After learning Oden tamed Kuri, Sukiyaki was immensely proud of him, rescinded the disownment and made him its Daimyo.

After Orochi's coup, Sukiyaki's secret imprisonment and Oden and Toki's deaths at the hands of Kaido and Orochi, Sukiyaki was shown to be very ashamed of not realizing Orochi's true nature until it was too late, and exiled himself out of shame. He initially had reservations in not telling his grandchildren of his survival but ultimately chose to after Wano was liberated and was happy at the acceptance.

Biography[]

81 years ago, Sukiyaki was born during a period of extreme unrest in Wano, due to his parents being heirless for a long time, which the head of Kurozumi family took advantage of by poisoning his rivals. After Sukiyaki was born, the Kurozumi head was exposed, captured, and sentenced to death.

Several years later, Sukiyaki learned the craftsmanship of the Kozuki family and eventually became its head, succeeding to become Wano's Shogun. Eventually, he fathered Oden. Although Sukiyaki was irritated of Oden's activities in his childhood, he nonetheless was extremely proud of his son. He soon reached a breaking point and exiled his son.

After Oden tamed the lawless land of Kuri, Sukiyaki was surprised and retracting his decision of exile, he bestowed the Daimyo position to him. Eventually, Oden came to meet with his father while impressing the people of the Capital with his dignified followers. Sukiyaki expressed pride in him but Oden remarked that it was because of him that he was able to succeed, shocking Sukiyaki with this attitude. This would be the last time, father and son would see each other.

After Oden meets the Whitebeard Pirates and leaves Wano to explore the world, Sukiyaki privately expresses happiness for his son being able to fulfill his ambitions.

Meanwhile, Kurozumi Higurashi and Kurozumi Semimaru, the remnants of Kurozumi Family still at Wano, plotted revenge against the Kozuki Family, and managed to convince Kurozumi Orochi on their side by showing him that he could have been the Shogun.

Sometime during the three years Oden was with the Whitebeard Pirates, the Kurozumi family captured Sukiyaki and imprisoned him deep within Wano, keeping him alive to torment him as Higurashi (as Sukiyaki) convinced the Daimyos of Wano to let Orochi become Shogun if anything happens to him. The Kurozumi family successfully fake Sukiyaki's passing as Orochi becomes the Shogun with backing of Kaido. After Oden returned and discovered the deception, he questioned on what they did to his father but got no answer.

In twenty-year, time span, Sukiyaki eventually escaped but when he did, Oden had returned and was executed while Wano was a barren wasteland. Feeling he failed his country, he took up a new name and hid his identity in shame. Somehow, he came into possession of his son's two swords and kept them until Momonosuke arrived.

He settled in a small village and took in a young girl named Tama who was orphaned after the deaths of her parents.

Wano Country Arc[]

Sometime after, Sukiyaki reveals himself to Nico Robin after finding her exploring the basement. He told her of his imprisonment and escape before stating that he didn't intend to reveal his identity to his grandchildren or Wano, feeling he didn't deserve to announce his survival. He also speculated the Red Scabbards knew the truth.

Sukiyaki then told Robin about the existence of the Ancient Weapon that lied deep within Wano and they were joined by Trafalgar Law who was curious. Sukiyaki informed them to use it, Wano's borders had to be opened and that he was unaware of why his son intended to open Wano, suggesting something from his voyage may explain it.

After the festival, he decided to reveal himself to Momonosuke and Hiyori, telling them that he is their grandfather. Before he could continue, he was happily embraced by the siblings who told him that it was a relief to know that they still had a relative out there after the deaths of their parents. It is also confirmed that the Red Scabbards (save Kin'emon) were aware of his identity but resolved to keep it to themselves until he was ready. Sukiyaki told Momonsuke that he would pass down the knowledge that he is owed as Shogun, since it is the least he could do before he secludes himself again to watch him rule over the country.
