~ Kris begging to the SOUL to stop traumatizing Noelle in a dialogue box in the Weird Route. |
Kris Dreemurr, also known as the Hero of Light, is the main protagonist of the 2018 episodic RPG indie video game Deltarune.
They're a Lightner and one of the three heroes mentioned in the Prophecy, meant to stop The Roaring and banish the Angel's Heaven. However, despite their stoic and quiet nature, Kris is a very different person from the player controlling them, and will not be afraid to temporarily remove the player's control over them to further their own goals.
Appearance[]
Kris is a young human. In their Light World form they have messy brown shoulder-length hair and an olive skin tone; they wear a green long-sleeved sweater with a singular yellow stripe across the torso and sleeves along with brown pants and shoes.
In the Dark World, they're dressed in a dark blue bodysuit with silver armor, silver boots, and a torn pink and blue cape. Their skin and hair are also now blue in color.
Though Kris's sprites usually cover their eyes with the shadow of their hair, a few cutscenes show that their eyes are inexplicably red.
Personality[]
Kris is described by the other residents of Hometown as a quiet, pale, and "creepy" kid who often keeps to themselves, but others say they are nice. It is also suggested that Kris does not like hugs or any kind of physical affection, as their father Asgore apologizes after hugging them in his the flower shop.
Kris is proven to have a mischievous streak, pulling pranks on Toriel and their neighbors on many occasions, such as using bath bombs and covering themselves in ketchup to pretend it's blood. However, these pranks seem to be mostly harmless. Kris is also shown to have a greedy side, often stealing chocolates from Toriel's room and eating the entirety of Toriel's butterscotch pie in the night between Chapters 1 and 2, despite being specifically told not to do that.
Kris seems to deeply miss their older brother, Asriel, as the two were described as inseparable in childhood before Asriel went away to college. As a result of Asriel's disappearance, Kris has difficulty making friends, but is shown to greatly value the friends they make during the adventure, including meeting Ralsei, reconnecting with Noelle, and especially the bond they form with Susie, whom they consider to be their new best friend (as implied at the end of Chapter 2). This can be seen how the two fool around in later chapters, such as pouring juice into each others' mouths in Chapter 4. Kris is shown to deeply value their friendships, as seen from how in Chapter 4, if the player forces Kris to tell Ralsei his feelings are unnatural, they cup their mouth before they can say "of course not", ensuring that they affirm him instead.
Like Chara, Kris seems to dislike humans as shown when they quickly close the book who depict them in the second floor of the library. This is probably do to the fact that they are the only human in a town of monster and feel that they would never be the same as them which also explain why they wear horn when they were little.
From Kris' reactions, it is suggested that Kris does not like being controlled by The SOUL and actively resists their commands at certain points in the story. Kris appears distressed by Spamton's comments about "puppets" and "strings", implying that Kris views the SOUL as a puppet master pulling the strings on them. During the game segments of Chapter 3, Kris will glare at the screen when references to control are brought up, indicating that they are very aware of the SOUL's intentions and despise them for it. Susie will also comment that Kris appears visibly distraught during the Snowgrave Route after The SOUL forces Noelle to kill Berdly. Furthermore, during the Weird Route in Chapter 4, Kris will rip the SOUL out and brutally beat it up while visiting Noelle's house, enraged over it forcing them to torment her. Despite this, they are willing to cooperate with the SOUL, helping them guess their favourite food in one of Tenna's quizzes by coughing when the pointer is brought near to the correct option.
Kris is implied to have some sort of relationship with the Knight, seeing as they are they tend not to cooperate with the SOUL during their battle with the Knight and will even cough to signal to it when its final attack is dodged perfectly, perhaps indicating that Kris is trying to sabotage the SOUL's efforts. They are also the only member of the party whose HP is not reduced to -999 when defeated, with the Knight seemingly knighting Kris before striking them down if it is triumphed over. This is further implied by the ending of Chapter 3 as the bunker's doors slightly open when Kris is alone before the screen cuts to black, indicating that they might be doing something behind the SOUL's back. Additionally, Kris's act of opening a Dark Fountain in their living room at the end of Chapter 2 indicates that their goals could align with the Knight's somehow. Conversely, the mysterious phone caller's remark of Kris owing them something implies that they're working out of obligation to the Knight and not out of malice. This all still waits to be seen in the future, however, and all that is possible currently is speculation.
Trivia[]
- It is suggested that Kris is the Deltarune universe counterpart to both The First Human and Frisk from Undertale.
- They have similar dressing styles to the two, having similar color palettes to Chara and Frisk's sweater design.
- Like Chara, they are a member of the Dreemurr family with a brother-sibling relationship with Asriel.
- Kris seems to have inherited many of Chara's likes and dislikes, such as their affinity for knives and chocolate and their repulsion towards the human race. Chapter 3 later clarifies that, while Kris does like chocolate, it isn't their favorite food unlike Chara.
- Both Kris and Chara have red, intimidating eyes.
- Chara and Kris both have mischievous tendencies, most notably scaring other people by doing scary faces.
- Kris has the same skin complexion as Frisk, as well as wearing similarly blue and pink clothing when in the Dark World.
- Kris is clearly an anagram of "Frisk," sans the F.
- According to Susie, Kris might not speak at all. However, this is clearly debunked through the fact you have the ability to speak through Kris numerous times throughout the game.
- Kris seems to have some disdain for other humans, seeing as they quickly shut a book they find at the library after finding a picture of other humans inside. Then again, it's possible that they act this way thanks to never meeting other humans their whole life, causing them to be unnerved by their appearances.
- As of Chapter 2, it's been speculated by fans that Kris is the Knight that has been creating the Dark Fountains. This was debunked in Chapter 3, as we see Kris come face to face with the Knight, however it is heavily implied that the two might be working together.
- Additionally, it's implied that when Spamton stops talking about the Knight and apologises before insulting Kris in Chapter 2, this was because Kris threatened him to shut up, preventing the SOUL from uncovering more.
- Unlike the previous humans seen in the franchise, Deltarune firmly sets Kris as their own established character with a backstory, personality, and life of their own instead of being a simple audience self-insert.
- Because of this, it's likely that Kris' use of they/them pronouns imply that they're actually non-binary instead of having an ambiguous gender identity. It is at least confirmed in the Forgotten Man's side quest in Chapter 3 that they do not identify as a male or a they're referred to as a "non-man." There's also the possibility that "non-man" means humans which could referred as the fact that Kris doesn't considered themselves as human.
- With the reveal of the full prophecy in Chapter 4, it's been speculated that Kris themselves may not actually be the prophesied human: the first hero is described as "the cage with human soul and parts" instead of merely a human. This implies that the prophesied human was supposed to be the player's vessel, but after this vessel's creation was disrupted, the SOUL was forced to inhabit Kris instead.
- Adding onto the theory that the Weird Route is an attempt to recorrect the game to the original prophecy, this would match up with the SOUL's more controlling behaviour towards Kris in this route, forcing them to submit to their will more and more like the vessel.
