To hell with logic!
~ Kroton's most famous catchphrase.
So beautiful.
~ Kroton on witnessing a breathtaking view.

Kroton (otherwise known as "Kroton the Cyberman" as well as "The Cyberman with a Soul") is a supporting character in Doctor Who Magazine's comics. He was a Cyber-Leader who uncharacteristically retained and regained his emotional capacity and was best known for having his own best selling comic book series of his own adventures in the Doctor Who comics, even joining and aiding the Eighth Doctor and his companion Izzy Sinclair on occasions.

Biography[]

Early Human Life[]
Kroton The Cyberman's Human Appearance

Kroton's actual past Human form with his wife Shallia, before his eventual capture and forced conversion into a Cyberman.

Very little is known about Kroton's early life. What is known is that he once had a very loving family, as well as a wife named Shallia, who was also his childhood friend at some point before they eventually and officially got married. At some unknown point, Kroton himself was captured, and taken away from his family by a hostile, emotionless, warrior race of mechanically-modified beings called the Cybermen, who forcibly converted and turned him into a Cyberman as well. Even Kroton himself over the years had forgotten all of his past, including his real name, and only knew his current life as a Cyberman.

Appearance[]

Kroton is a tall, Mondasian Cyberman, with mostly silver finish as well as a distinctive black marking in the center of his metal face plate indentifying his rank as a Junior Cyber-Leader. Junior Cyber-Leaders are usually known for commanding the individual units of the Cyber-Army. As part of the Major Phalanx, they assisted Leaders, who in turn assisted the commanding Senior Leaders, who answered only to the Cyber-Controller himself.

Personality[]

In his early life, Kroton showed child like innocence to everything around him. he was often bothered and horrified by death, and even tragedy that surrounded him.

Kroton appreciated beauty, which is something most Cybermen refuse to accept. Upon leaving Telos for his mission on Mondaran, he considered out loud if he would ever see the skies of his home planet again. These qualities made the Eight Doctor realize that Kroton was indeed no ordinary Cyberman. He also withstood the impression of the interior of the TARDIS; when the Doctor himself asked Kroton if it struck him as "illogical", Kroton however happily cast away the word, stating, "To hell with logic!".

Unlike most Cybermen, Kroton was a truly merciful, brave, and honorable individual who also had a balanced moral sense of right and wrong, becoming utterly infuriated at the possibility of a Sontaran plan for genocide of innocent natives as well as the Church of the Glorious Dead's atrocities against the alien ambassadors on the planet Paradost.

Abilities[]

  • Expert Strategist: Kroton is very good at coming up with brilliant plans and strategies.
  • Armor: Kroton's armor is unique and lasted longer than standard Cybermen armor. Kroton himself got his armor upgrade one day due to helping out a group of Technosmiths on Baroq VII during his journeys, they thanked him by making some "special adaptions" to his armour; which allowed Kroton to better withstand blaster fire from various guns, including Sontaran lasers, as well as withstanding a powerful electric charge after the Eighth Doctor mistook him for a normal Cyberman and shoved a high-voltage cable into his chest unit; which merely disabled him temporarily. He even stated to the Doctor when revealing the adjustments that "when half the galaxy keeps trying to shoot you on sight, you learn how to protect yourself!"
  • Skilled Combatant: Kroton is a very skilled and expert combatant, especially in hand to hand combat as well.
  • Cyber Gun: Kroton used to own a Cyber Gun, that is until he sadly lost it, and had it replaced with a staff.
  • Staff: Kroton nowadays carries a staff as a suitable replacement for his lost Cyber Gun. This staff was used expertly by Kroton himself during combat, as well as magnetizing it to his back easily, without the use of a strap to hold it in place. Kroton was often seen using it to great effect during his battles with both the warmongering Sontarans, and the Space Pirates, before finally using it during his battle with Sato.

Trivia[]

  • Created in 1979 during the early issues of Doctor Who Magazine, Kroton's story was both originally and initially meant to be a one-off, but his story saw brief continuations over the years. This eventually ended with him becoming a brief companion of the Eighth Doctor, more than twenty years after his creation. The character's creator, Steve Moore, had said that he was not aware of the character's use outside of Ship of Fools, and that he thought latter stories were too far a removed from the initial concept.
  • Scott Gray had intended for Izzy to mention Kroton during her breakdown in Beautiful Freak, but felt it was a little too much continuity to be bringing up in the scene.
  • So far Kroton isn't the only Cyberman companion; the next would be Handles, who appeared in the television story The Time of the Doctor and in short stories in Tales of Trenzalore; athough Handles is not (or no longer) a cyber-conversion victim, but the head of a Cyberman with all Cyberman protocols and organic parts cleansed out. The Twelfth Doctor's companion Bill Potts would also later undergo cyber-conversion in the television story World Enough and Time, and the Fifth Doctor companion Marcipor [nicknamed "Marc"] underwent partial cyber-conversion in the audio story Conversion. The Sixth Doctor's companion Evelyn was converted into a Cyber-Controller in Real Time (webcast). Twelth Doctor companion Danny Pink was also converted into a Cybermen, and he ultimately gave his life to save Earth in order to protect Clara Oswald.
  • Other heroic Cybermen out there, such as Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and Yvonne Hartman.
  • Kroton himself has since become one of the most iconic reoccurring Cybermen characters to appear more than once in the Doctor Who franchise, and he has since gained popularity as well as becoming a fan favorite among Doctor Who fans who are familiar with him.
