Kurenai Yūhi (夕日紅, Yūhi Kurenai) is a supporting character in the Naruto anime/manga series and the Boruto anime/manga series.
She is a jōnin-level kunoichi from Konohagakure. She is also the leader of Team Kurenai, which consists of: Hinata Hyūga, Shino Aburame, Kiba Inuzuka, and Kiba's ninken, Akamaru.
In the English version, she is voiced by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn (except for her first appearance).
In the Japanese version, she is voiced by Rumi Ochiai (as an adult), and by Megumi Han (as a child).
Appearance[]
Kurenai has dark brown hair, crimson-colored eyes and light-colored skin. She has a slender build and is shorter than Asuma Sarutobi, her former lover. Since Boruto, she cut her shoulder-length brown hair to a shorter hair style. In Part I and II, she is seen wearing her jonin flak jacket along with a short dress or standard jonin clothing. By Boruto, she is seen wearing a red dress.
Personality[]
As a mentor, Kurenai generally comes off as pretty serious and strict, but fair and caring. Of all her students, Kurenai is closest with Hinata, acting as a surrogate parent/mother in the absence of Hinata's father and helping Hinata overcome her weaknesses.
History[]
Naruto[]
During the Chūnin Exams, Kurenai watched her students' fights from the sidelines, rarely commenting in a concluding manner. As she watched the fight between her student Hinata and her cousin Neji, she recalled the terrible family relationship Hinata had with her father and also noticed the contrast in her student's skills where she wanted to give up. When Neji flew into an uncontrollable rage at the end of the fight, he almost killed Hinata, but Guy, Hayate, Kakashi and Kurenai stopped him.
A month after the third round of the Chūnin Exams, Kurenai and Kiba train Shino for the tournament finals, with him being the only member of Team 8 to reach the finals. When the finals of the tournament took place, Kurenai sat next to her and watched the participants' fights with Asuma.
She also participates in the failed invasion of Konoha and is shown at the roof of the stadium where Hiruzen Sarutobi is lying dead, due to him using the forbidden technique of the 4th Hokage and is also shown attending his funeral. Later on, Kurenai fights Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki from the Akatsuki, along with her friends Kakashi Hatake, Might Guy, and Asuma Sarutobi.
Naruto Shippuden[]
Kurenai is revealed to be pregnant with Asuma's child. Several months after Asuma's death, Kurenai gave birth to their daughter Mirai Sarutobi, who later becomes a kunoichi by the events of the series epilogue.

- She was originally voiced by Saffron Henderson (who also voices Oxnard) for Naruto Episode 3.
- Her english voice actress, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn is also best known for voicing as Ophanimon/Salamon from Digimon Frontier, Pickmonz, PawnChessmon from Digimon Fusion, Pajiramon from Digimon Tamers, Kanoe from X/1999 and Lady Jaguara from Wolf's Rain.
- She shares the same English voice with Mei Terumī.
- Kurenai's eyes resemble like she has the sharingan. This has caused many fans to think she's secretly an Uchiha. However, this is not true, as she is from the Yuhi Clan. Kurenai's special ability is to trap people in genjutsu, as she tried to put Itachi in in episode 81.
- Although she didn't marry Asuma before he died, she still changed her surname to Sarutobi.
