Hero Overview

Good grief.
~ Saiki Kusuo's famous quote

Kusuo Saiki is the titular main protagonist of the manga and anime series, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K. He usually avoids getting into troublesome situations due to using his kinds of ESP-related abilities either intentionally or not. His trademark appearances contain his green-tinted glasses and two pink antennas located slightly above each ear which have the function of limiting his power. In the beginning, he was always seen alone but as the story progresses he eventually gets along with his schoolmates, especially Nendo, Shun, Hairo, Aren, and Kokomi. Kusuo is one of the main characters of the series and was starred by Yamazaki Kento in the live-action of the series.

He is voiced in Japanese by Hiroshi Kamiya, who voices Levi Ackerman from Attack on Titan, Ranpo Edogawa from Bungo Stray Dogs, Trafalgar D. Water Law from One Piece, and Ataru Moroboshi from Urusei Yatsura (2022), and Haruka Tomatsu (in his female form), who voices Asuna Yuuki from Sword Art Online and Zero Two from DARLING in the FRANXX, and in English by Jerry Jewell who voices Principal Nezu from My Hero Academia, and by Jamie Marchi (in his female form), who voices Mt. Lady from My Hero Academia. In the Netflix English dub, he is voiced by Kyle McCarley, who voices Yushiro from Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and Shigeo "Mob" Kageyama from Mob Psycho 100.

Appearance[]

As a child, Kusuo does not wear any limiter and has striking pink hair that differs from both of his parents. In his current image, he has a limiter on both sides of his head which is never removed unless absolutely necessary or by accident. During his days at school, he wears the standard PK Academy uniform that all male students wear, while on his days off he wears clothes that are sewn by his mother. However, there are times he is forced to buy clothes with Shun and Riki. Kusuo's appearance is not limited to that of a male, as he can also transform into anything (but it takes 2 hours to transform).

In his female form, Kusuo is first known as Kusuko (he later changes it to Kuriko to avoid obviousness from the former's name). The female form features lighter pink hair and lacks a pair of power limiters, although she still wears glasses but is different from his male form.

In his cat form, Kusuo is known as Psi and has white fur. In this form, he still wears his glasses and his power limiters are in the form of a collar around his neck.

Personality[]

As a Psi user, Kusuo is usually emotionless and constrains himself from having many friends, preferring to do whatever it takes to not be associated with others so that he doesn't expose his powers. Due to this, he has never spoken using his voice, instead preferring to project his words via telepathy into the minds of others. Although he didn't have any friends a first year, during his 2nd year, a lot of his classmates like Riki, Shun, Kineshi, Aren, Kokomi, Chiyo, Chisato, Reita, and Mikoto kept on bugging him and somehow changed his perspective. He later thought of himself as a friend of theirs and even outwardly called Shun his friend.

Although he doesn't express much interest in many things due to his powers (e.g. surprise parties, romance, fortune-telling, etc), Kusuo is addicted to the dessert known as coffee jello and can be persuaded to participate in anything his friends are in as long as he receives his coffee jello. His addiction is not just limited to coffee jelly but also to different kinds of sweets. Despite being able to get anything he wants without using any money, Kusuo uses money and saves up money to buy something he wants, like the Coffee Jelly Maker. His kind mom was the sole reason why he didn't abuse his own psychic abilities for nefarious activities. Kusuo also has an interest in television shows, due to electronics (unless he uses his psychometry) being unaffected by his powers, allowing him to enjoy dramas/scenes that prevent the use of his telepathy which leaves him open to spoilers from the thoughts of others.

Powers and Abilities[]

Kusuo is beyond a doubt, one of the most powerful psychics in existence. Without his limiters, he can hear the thoughts of every person on the planet and could exterminate all of humanity and bring further destruction with a single thought if he wanted to.

Kusuo can read people's thoughts 200 meters with his telepathy. However, he cannot read some people's thoughts who are idiots such as Nendou Riki, especially insects. He is capable of telepathically communicating with animals like cats, hamsters, monkeys, etc.

  • Telekinesis/Psychokinesis - Kusuo can use telekinesis to manipulate objects from afar.
  • Mind Control - He is able to influence other people's minds. He is able to do this to the entire planet at once, which is why it is one of his most powerful abilities.
  • Memory Alteration - He is able to remove a certain memory from someone's mind by hitting them with an object. However, when a memory is removed, it is replaced by a false one. Saiki is unaware of what the false memories planted are.
  • Hypnosis - He is able to hypnotize people so people see objects or people as something else. He used this to disguise Reita Toritsuka as himself. He also used this to make a performance's audience believe that the performers on stage were wearing bright & colorful costumes, when in reality they were wearing school tracksuits.
  • Bilocation - Saiki is able create clones of himself to do things for him, however the more clones he creates, the less accurate they are to the original.
  • Elemental Manipulation - He is capable of hydrokinesis, electrokinesis, cryokinesis, and pyrokinesis. He can use pyrokinesis to make people sweat.
  • Size Augmentation - Kusuo can capable of shifting in size. He can shrink to be tiny, or grow to be huge. It takes him 1 hour to return to his normal size.
  • Shape-shifting - Saiki can shape-shift and change his body to almost any animal he desires. It takes him 2 hours to complete the transformation and when he is not in his human form, it is hard for him to control his power.
  • Clairvoyance - He can see events and things from far away. When he uses it, he moves his eyes so that he is cross-eyed. He is also able to magnify objects from far away, so he can see them more clearly.

Appearances in other media[]

Kusuo appears in the anime crossover fighting video game J-Stars Victory VS as one of the playable characters. He also made a cameo in Assassination Classroom Second Season. His power limiters made a cameo in Gintama, which was appeared in Season 2 Episode 1A for a crossover between two series.
