Kyouka Izumi (泉 鏡花 Izumi Kyōka) is one of the two tritagonists (alongside Doppo Kunikida) of the Bungo Stray Dogs franchise.
She is a former assassin of the Port Mafia. After being saved by Atsushi Nakajima from attempting to commit suicide to not kill any more innocent people in a train bombing incident, she eventually redeemed herself and no longer kills people. In the aftermath of the Guild War later in the series, she becomes the newest official member of the Armed Detective Agency.
She was voiced by Sumire Morohoshi (who voices Emma from The Promised Neverland, Palla Palla/Sailor Pallas from Sailor Moon Eternal, and Hitoka Yachi from Haikyuu!!) in the Japanese version and Cherami Leigh (who voices Minako Aino/Sailor Venus from Sailor Moon, Asuna Yuuki Sword Art Online, and Sarada Uchiha from the Boruto series) in the English version. In live-action, she was portrayed by Sakina Kuwae.
Appearance[]
Kyouka Izumi is a 14-year-old young girl who has black hair tied with two low twin tails. She also has blue eyes, and pale skin. She wears two flower pins, a red kimono with patterns that likely resembles a sprout with yellow deatejime a kimono belt that's nearly completely tied up, white stockings, and Japanese sandals.
History[]
Kyouka Izumi once lived a normal life with her parents. Her dad was a former government agent and become a freelancer who worked for the assassinations of several important people. Her mother was also like her, an assassin who wielded the deadly slaughtering ability, Demon Snow.
One night, while she was playing with a ball by herself, her parents were taking out several assassins that snuck into their home to try and kill the entire family, the thugs are easily dispatched by Kyouka's parents who both mercilessly and casually killed them off. One of the assassins however, had the ability to mind-control other people using blood as a medium. The unknown gifted activates their power to control Kyouka's father first, he realizes his body is moving against his will and his gun is aimed right at the young Kyouka in an attempt to kill her. Realizing he's being controlled by the enemy and is mere moments away from shooting his own daughter, Kyouka's father orders his wife to kill him right away while barely resisting the influence. Kyouka's mother obeyed his command and had to cut him down using Demon Snow without hesitation before Kyouka was harmed. Unfortunately, her face is stained with her husband's blood, allowing the attacker to put Kyouka's mother under the exact same manipulation as well. Kyouka's mom discovers that the ability mind control's its targets through blood but it's too late and just like her husband, Kyouka's mother is subjugated to mind control and unwillingly prepares to kill her daughter. As a last resort, Kyouka's mother uses her remaining strength to beg Demon Snow to protect Kyouka no matter the cost, even if it means killing its master, Demon Snow follows this command and strikes down Kyouka's mother afterward.
Before her death, Kyouka's mother transferred her ability onto Kyouka in order to protect her, using a technique she learned from an ability user who can control shadows. However, the attack was sudden, so the transfer of Demon Snow was imperfect, so Kyouka's phone became the source to her being able to control her ability.
Ever since that day, the Port Mafia took her in where she met Akutagawa, she sought out to the latter after hearing rumors that his ability: Rashomon, could cut through anything and begged him with dejected desire in her eyes, to cut down Demon Snow and avenge her parents' deaths then kill her right after. It was presumably this encounter that led to Akutagawa sympathizing with Kyouka, given he had felt a similar experience to her own when he was young. Akutagawa gave meaning to her life by bringing her to the port Mafia where she could put proper use to her ability by killing instead of fulfilling her wishes to die.
A few years later, Kyouka's standing in the street alone where she discovers her target, Osamu Dazai and swiftly captures him under the Port Mafia's orders. Afterward, Kyouka heard Akutagawa say her final mission: to place the bomb on the train. Later on, Kyouka walked around to where the located the train, but she bumped into a boy named Atsushi Nakajima who was carrying Akiko Yosano's shopping bags and ignore him.
Later on, on the train attacked by Motojirō Kajii, she encounters Atsushi once more, Kyouka attacks Atsushi using Demon Snow and introduces her name to Atsushi and that she likes rabbits and tofu and she dislikes dogs and thunder, she also revealed that she killed 35 people which he is shocked to hear.
After the battle concluded, he told Kyouka to surrender and tell him where the bomb was, but she simply responded by saying "My name is Kyouka. I killed thirty-five people." again, Kyoka opens her kimono, which is when Atsushi notices that she didn't have the bomb, but in fact, was the bomb itself as it was seen strapped to her body. She then gives Atsushi the detonator to deactivate the bomb. However, it is quickly revealed to be remote activated. After Akutagawa notices the button was pushed, he congratulates Kyouka and says that her sacrifice will make an example. Finally breaking free from Port Mafia's influence, she ultimately sacrifices herself by approaching the exit of the train while the bomb is still attached to her. Before she jumps, she says: "My name is Kyouka. I have killed 35 people. I don't want to kill anymore!". She jumps off the train with the bomb in order sacrifice her own life without anyone dying along with her. But suddenly, Atsushi jumps off with Kyouka and rips off the bomb to prevent Kyouka from blowing up, saving her life.
Personality[]
Kyouka is cold, quiet, and emotionless, as she is responsible for killing 35 people during her time in the Port Mafia. Prior to her parents' deaths by Demon Snow, she was a normal girl enjoying a peaceful life with them despite their reputations as assassins behind it. Becoming an orphan with an inherited ability from her mother, Kyouka's moral becomes crooked when she stated herself about deserving to die for committing a terrible crime to kill people. Overcoming the darkness thanks to Atsushi's positive influence, however, she is rather strong-willed and selfless to save others to the point that she is worthy to become part of the Armed Detective Agency. Upon her encounter with Atsushi, Kyouka gradually becomes warmer and leaves her assassin past behind her.

- She is named after and based around the Japanese author and novelist Kyōka Izumi (1873-1939). Her ability references to his work, “Demon Pond”.
- Like Kouyou Ozaki, her real-life counterpart is masculine. In other words, he's male.
- In reality, Kyōka was the protege of Kōyō Ozaki who admired the latter throughout his entire life, pursuing a career in literature due to Kōyō's Amorous Confessions of Two Nuns. In 1891, Kyōka was taken in as a houseboy in the Ozaki household, where he cleaned the house and performed errands in return for Kōyō's expertise opinions on his manuscripts.
