Lê Thành, also known as Phan Thành, is the main protagonist of the Vietnamese crime drama series The Arbitrator, based on the Israeli crime drama series of the same name.
He is a psychologist with a passion for science who is determined to find out his true lineage. Eventually he discovers that he is the son of Phan Quân, the chairman of the Phan Thị Group and a powerful crime lord. Because of this, he gradually breaks away from his moral values and evolves into a ruthless criminal himself, with the intention of taking the role as the next leader of Phan Thị from Phan Quân's other son, Phan Hải. Despite this, he never actually stops caring about his loved ones and still tries to protect them from harm as much as possible.
He was portrayed by Hồng Đăng.
Appearance[]
Lê Thành is a young, handsome Asian man in his 20s with black hair. When the series starts, he wears regular clothes, consisting of a plaid T-shirt and black trousers. As the series progresses, he starts to wear a dark-colored businessman suit, symbolizing his personality becoming darker. During the finale, he again wears the same clothes he had in the beginning.
Personality[]
Lê Thành starts out with everything a man of Vietnamese middle class can ever ask for: a happy life with a kind and gentle officer for a father, a saleswoman with an occasional temper for a mother, a beautiful younger sister in the college. Meanwhile, he is free to pursue his career as a psychologist with his passionate research. The only tragic thing about him is that he still misses his former lover, Bích Ngọc.
Then when his father passes away and he is revealed to have been adopted, Lê Thành's world view shatters and he believes himself to be a stranger within his own family, despite them still treating him like an official member. He is determined to find out his biological family, a decision that seals his fate. Upon finding out that his biological father is the ruthless crime lord Phan Quân, Lê Thành is both horrified and fascinated by it and gradually breaks away from his original moral values. The tragedies that later befall him, orchestrated by Phan Quân's wife, Hồ Thu, to kill him so as to retain her and her children's inheritance rights, breaks him so thoroughly that he becomes a ruthless criminal on his own right.
To make matters worse, he then finds out that he is apparently "Boss-eyed" Thế's son rather than Phan Quân's, meaning that once again, he is a stranger within his own family. However this later turns out to be a trick by Thế to manipulate him into helping Thế to destroy the Phan Thị Group, and he really is Phan Quân's son after all. Lê Thành eventually figures out the truth and kills both Thế and "Toothy" Phúc, as well as trying to tell the truth to Phan Quân only to be shot by the latter, dying a tragic death.
Despite his increasingly dark selfish personality, Lê Thành still tries to protect his loved ones whenever he can. He respects Mr. Sạn for saving his life and helps the latter's mentally ill granddaughter, eventually slowly curing her, much to Mr. Sạn's joy. When Mr. Sạn is killed for trying to protect him, Lê Thành insists to avenge him despite Phan Quân's protest. He also wants to marry Bích Ngọc and bring her happiness after knowing how much physical and emotional damage she endures from her family, and he even asks Phan Quân to organize the wedding before he can flee with her, to which Phan Quân agrees.
Upon finding out that he has been tricked by Thế, he kills both the latter and "Toothy" Phúc to avenge Hồ Thu, who he killed due to Thế's manipulation. In his final moments, Lê Thành also tries to reason with Phan Quân and gives the real ADN test to the latter to confirm that they're indeed family.
Biography[]
Lê Thành is a psychologist who lives a happy life with his family. When his father passes away, he learns that he is adopted and is determined to find out his true family. Following his biological mother's diary provided by an acquaitance of his family, he tracks his lineage and finds out that his father is Phan Quân, the head of the Phan Thị Group and a powerful crime lord. Because of this, Lê Thành becomes attracted to the underworld, while Phan Quân's wife, Hồ Thu, orders multiple assassination attempts on him in order to retain her and her children's inheritance rights. While they fail to kill him, they ends up harming people he cares about, much to his sadness.
He later finds out that he's apparently the son of "Boss-eyed" Thế, the leader of the Thiên Long Gang and Phan Quân's business rival, unaware that this is actually a trap set up by Thế via fake ADN test paper to manipulate Lê Thành into helping him to take down the Phan Thị Group. Lê Thành goes with Thế's manipulation for a while and even shoots Hồ Thu dead, but later figures out the truth and kills both Thế and "Toothy" Phúc. He later tries to tell Phan Quân the truth, but the latter kills him in anger, but not before Lê Thành gives him the real ADN test paper. Lê Thành's actions end up causing the Phan Thị Group to collapse.

- In the beginning, Lê Thành smiles very little, yet once he has went through all those traumas, he begins to smile a lot, as if it is his way of coping.
- Hồng Đăng was nominated a VTV Award for Impressive Actor for his role as Lê Thành, but lost it to Hoàng Dũng.
