Lúthien Tinúviel, commonly simply known as Lúthien, is a character in the books The Silmarillion and Beren and Lúthien, as well as the poem The Lay of Leithian by the English writer J. R. R. Tolkien. Daughter of Elu Thingol (Elwë Singollo), ruler of the enchanted elven kingdom of Doriath, and the Maia Melian. The love story of Beren and Lúthien is one of the three great tales of the First Age, along with the stories of the Children of Húrin and the Fall of Gondolin.
Biography[]
Lúthien was born shortly after Melkor's first captivity. From her mother she inherited the extraordinary magical power inherent in the Maiar. Lúthien was the most beautiful among the Children of Ilúvatar (Fëanor was the most beautiful of the Children of Eru, therefore Lúthien was the most beautiful of the daughters of Ilúvatar) and among them, she was the most noble and pure. Lúthien's main exploits were the theft of one of the Silmarils from the Crown of Morgoth, as well as the victory over Sauron in a magical duel on the island of Tol-in-Gaurhoth. Lúthien was the first of the elves to marry a mortal - Beren, the son of Barahir, whom she was able to resurrect from the dead only by renouncing immortality herself; accordingly, Lúthien is the first of the elves who actually died and did not go to the Halls of Mandos (the same fate had her great-great-granddaughter Arwen). There are many songs about the love of Beren and Lúthien, among them “The Song of Beren and Lúthien” and “The Song of Release from Bonds” (so long that in the Third Age, of all those living in Middle-earth, only Lúthien’s great-grandson Elrond remembered it in its entirety). The only son of Lúthien and Beren, Dior inherited the throne of Doriath.
