From now on, Lacus Clyne will be singing the song of peace.
~ Lacus Clyne

Lacus Clyne is the main female protagonist of the anime series Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and its sequel series Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. She has been portrayed as a pop idol and serves as the love interest for Kira Yamato. She is often known for being a strict pacifist, who has been trying to end the conflicts among the various warring factions peacefully. She is the chairperson of the PLANT council and co-leader of her family's faction.

She is voiced by Rie Tanaka in the Japanese version and Chantal Strand in the Ocean dub and Stephanie Sheh in the NYAV Post dub in the English version.

Bio[]

An important political figure, Lacus essentially dropped off the radar following the end of the First Bloody Valentine War to live quietly with Kira in the South Pacific. Forced back into action by an assassination attempt against her, she returns to space in an attempt to consolidate enough power to stop Durandal.

Personality & Character[]

Lacus Clyne, in her first few appearances, originally appears to be naive and a bit of an airhead, but it is only due to her idealistic and pacifistic nature. Beneath the surface as a pop star and a PLANT idol, she is actually a quite deep and philosophical person, as she demonstrates when she delivers speeches throughout the series - mainly about the widening rift between Naturals and Coordinators, the ironies of calling for peace yet doing so with weapons in hand, and the real causes of war as being within the human heart itself. As the leader of the Clyne Faction (and later the Three Ships Alliance and Terminal), Lacus is very charismatic, strong-willed, and determined to see their fight for peace through to the end. Like her father, Siegel Clyne, Lacus wishes to see a world where Naturals and Coordinators would willingly work together and coexist in harmony, disregarding the notion that Coordinators are an evolved species. Being a pacifist, Lacus holds a strong dislike for war, expressing that they are simply started and repeated through a neverending cycle of attack and retaliation.

Story[]

Lacus Clyne is a pop idol among the PLANTs, this is due to both her father, Siegel Clyne, Supreme Council chairmen of PLANT, and the fact her beautiful singing voice is so grand (many suspect that this is partly due to the fact she is a Coordinator). Near the beginning of the series she was engaged to Athrun Zala through an arranged marriage. Though (reporting to the drama CD) the two were in love when they first met, their feelings diminished as time went on and the engagement became more political then ever before.

The pink-haired princess enters the series when she is traveling in a civilian vessel for a memorial ceremony on Junius Seven. The ship is mistaken for a ZAFT military aircraft, and is attacked by the Earth Alliance. Lacus is escorted to a lifepod, and escapes safely. Shortly thereafter, Lacus' escape pod is discovered by Kira in the Strike. He brings the pod back to the Archangel.

The doors to the life pod open and out hops a small, pink, robotic ball. Following after it is Lacus Clyne herself in a bit of dismay that she was saved by Earth forces. Despite being enemies, the girl is cheery and kind to everyone on the ship as they keep her hostage. ZAFT forces discover the Archangel, and a battle breaks out. Before the Earth Alliance can suffer more loss, Natarle Badgiruel opens a channel to the enemy. It is then revealed to ZAFT that Lacus Clyne, the famous idol, is onboard the Archangel.

Kira is distraught and, due to Flay's abusive words, comes direly close to an emotional breakdown; however, Lacus attempts to comfort him. The couple find that they both know Athrun Zala on a personal level, and even that Athrun made Lacus' Haro/Pink-chan (her pink, robotic ball) and Kira's Torii (his flying bird robot). Kira decides to return Lacus to where she belongs with Athrun.

Even before meeting Kira, Lacus had an indirect influence on the war. She spread her opinion throughout PLANT by singing a song of peace, her lyrics filled with the hope of harmony between the nations. After encountering the Archangel, she expresses a larger need to achieve peace by aiding Kira many more times, causing Athrun to question his purpose for taking part in the war, and much more.

Trivia[]

  • Mitsuo Fukuda, the director of Gundam SEED, claimed in a 2003 interview that he drew inspiration from actress Audrey Hepburn for the creation of Lacus' character.[29]
  • Three of her songs - Shizukana Yoruni (In the Quiet Night), Mizu no Akashi, and Fields of Hope, can be found in the various Gundam SEED soundtracks and music albums.
  • Chantal Strand also voiced Feldt Grace from Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
  • English voice actress Chantal Strand who voiced Lacus also voiced Kazumi Yoshida from Shakugan no Shana. Lacus and Flay's English voice actresses, Chantal Strand and Tabitha St. Germain, play a similar love triangle relationship role with Kazumi Yoshida and Shana from Shakugan no Shana.
  • Chantal Strand also voiced Diamond Tiara in My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, which is much stranger considering that Maryke Hendrikse voiced Spitfire, Matt Hill voiced Soarin' and Tabitha St. Germain voiced Rarity. Who in turn, those actors portrayed Lunamaria Hawke, Kira Yamato and Flay Allster.
  • Kira and Lacus were never shown to have kissed each other on the lips in the series. But in the Gundam SEED Character Theater, it was shown that Kira and Lacus kiss each other on the lips. Furthermore, Sunrise released an official image of the couple about to kiss.
  • Kira and Lacus have kissed off-screen in Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, The Song of Truth at 15:19-15:21. The kiss is audible in the background.
  • In Gundam SEED: Rengou vs ZAFT series, it is possible to designate Lacus as a pilot of a mobile suit. However, her statistic points are considered as one of the worst in the game. In Gundam Musou series, it is possible for the player to put Lacus in the ∞ Justice, yet her statistic points are far worse than Athrun Zala's, the default pilot of the mobile suit. Maxed out, however, she has a much greater Shot stat than Athrun and Defense on par with his. In the PS3 version of Gundam Extreme Vs. Full Boost, Lacus can be obtained as free DLC as an alternate pilot for the Infinite Justice with the suit's cost slashed down to 1000, lacking the ability to ride the sub-lifter and having the kick combo removed in lieu of Strike Freedom as an assist.
  • Despite being one of her most popular roles, Rie Tanaka said at her appearance at the 2008 New York Anime Festival that Lacus is the hardest character she played so far.[30]
  • Lacus' exit from her escape pod in episodes 7 and 8 of Gundam SEED is a nod to Lalah Sune's exit from Char's shuttle in episode 34 ("The Glory of Solomon") of Mobile Suit Gundam.
  • In an episode of SEED, Lacus draws a Turn A Gundam-like mustache on her dark-blue Haro.
  • Lacus is the first-ever female leader of the PLANT Supreme Council. Eileen Canaver was only acting Chairwoman until Gilbert Durandal replaced her as permanent Chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council.
  • Lacus makes a cameo appearance as a plush doll in the Sunrise anime Cross Ange: Rondo of Angel and Dragon.
  • In Gundam SEED DESTINY Suit CD Vol. 8's Suit Mini-Drama "Secret Strategy", Lacus walks in on Andrew Waltfeld while he was watching a live broadcast of Meer Campbell's concert and expresses interest in it, seemingly forgetting the favor she wanted to ask at first. Andrew then teaches her a few of Meer's dance moves using a few pieces of media he collected for "intelligence-gathering" purposes, later showing what they practiced to Kira. While flattered that Kira prefers her over the impostor, Lacus' actual intention (that Andrew unknowingly fulfilled) was to get info on Meer's mannerisms for a plan she has in mind.
