Landmine is a supporting character in Generation One of the Transformers franchise. He was based on a figure in the 1988 toyline.
Marvel Comics[]
Landmine first appeared in Issue #40 as a member of Fortress Maximus' crew. He was one of six Autobots who underwent the new Pretender process, being equipped with hardened shells that gave them the appearance of giant humans. Together, and with direction from a computer recording of Optimus Prime, they defended a computer research facility from the Decepticon Pretenders. In the following issue, Landmine was one of the senior Autobots who accompanied Fortress Maximus to his first meeting with Earth Autobot leader Grimlock, being introduced as Pretender Group Leader, and witnessed the subsequent duel for leadership between Grimlock and Blaster.
In the UK annual story "The Chain-Gang", Landmine, Cloudburst and Splashdown went to liberate an oil rig captured by Decepticon Pretenders Skullgrin, Bomb-Burst and Iguanus. While Cloudburst co-opted Bomb-Burst to stop a plane crashing into the oil rig, Landmine and Splashdown defeated Skullgrin and Iguanus, with the Decepticons being taken into custody.
Landmine's most significant appearance was in the storyline that covered Issues #52 and #53. He and Cloudburst were sent by Optimus Prime to negotiate for microchips to repair the Autobots damaged in recent battles. They disguised themselves as humans to visit a station where robots weren't welcome. While Cloudburst felt their mission was the priority, Landmine got into a bar fight trying to defend a robot patron, and then insisted on investigating the fact that Autobot Sky Lynx had disappeared on the station. He sent his Pretender shell with Cloudburst to meet with the Meccanibals, who provided microchips by eating robots and had Sky Lynx next on their menu. Landmine hid outside in robot mode and managed to free Sky Lynx and re-enter his shell without anyone noticing. Landmine and Cloudburst alerted Sky Lynx's human friend Berko but were discovered by Hi-Test and Throttle, partners of the Decepticon Powermasters Dreadwind and Darkwing, who betrayed them to the Mecannibals.
Cloudburst convinced the Mecannibals to let him and Landmine search for minerals to use as seasoning, leaving Berko as a hostage. They made contact with the female tribe on Fermax. When their leader decapitated Cloudburst on learning he was a robot, Landmine put aside his instincts to reason with the tribe and get him restored. They were then attacked by Dreadwind and Darkwing but saved by Sky Lynx, and used them as a hostage to get the Meccanibals to release Berko and restore the robots they had taken the microchips from.
Landmine continued to appear among the active Autobots. In the UK exclusive story "Deathbringer", he was among the Autobots who accompanied Optimus Prime to Earth to confront the Deathbringer robot. Similarly, in the Return of Megatron arc that started in US Issue #56, he was part of the unit that accompanied Optimus Prime to MacDill Air Force Base to confront the Air Strike Patrol. They fought Scorponok's Decepticons until Optimus Prime ordered most of the party back to the Ark on realising the attack was a distraction. Landmine was frustrated when Hot Rod, who was next to him, insisted on staying behind against orders to help Optimus Prime.
Landmine made his last appearance in Issue #66, where he was the first casualty of the battle with Decepticon leader Thunderwing, taking a full blast to the chest from the Matrix and being killed instantly.
