Heroine Overview

It was thousands of years ago. I was only meant to visit (earth) for a short time, but I got caught in a middle of a war. It was awful! I tried to run but--I was picked up by a Homeworld soldier and confused for a Crystal Gem and used as a tool. They asked me, "Show us your base!", "Where is your leader?" I didn't know. I couldn't say I'm not one of them. I was left behind. And there I stayed. Freedom in my sight, but out of reach for ages, until I was found.
~ Lapis tells Steven about her unfair imprisonment by the Homeworld Gems
I couldn't stay away. If they're gonna punish me like a Crystal Gem, I might as well be one.
~ Lapis in "Reunited" officially joining the Crystal Gems
I'm gonna use my tears to make a watercolor painting of you.
~ Lapis in "The Future"

Lapis Lazuli is a major character in Steven Universe. She serves a the secondary antagonist of the Season 1, a minor character in Season 2 and one of the pentagonists of Season 3 and onward.

She is a former Homeworld Gem and a former agent of Blue Diamond until rescued by the Crystal Gems in Gem Drill after unfusing from being Malachite during a battle with them fused as Alexandrite in "Super Watermelon Island". She lived on the barn with Peridot and is now an ally to the Crystal Gems and Steven. She eventually left Earth and took the barn with her in "Raising the Barn". However in the Season 5 half-hour special, "Reunited", Lapis returns to Earth to aid Steven and the Crystal Gems in fighting against Yellow and Blue Diamond and officially calling herself a Crystal Gem. Unfortunately, it ends with Lapis getting poofed by Yellow Diamond. She eventually reappears in the Season 5 half-hour finale special, "Change Your Mind" to help Steven and Connie along with Peridot and Bismuth. She currently lives with Peridot and Bismuth in Steven Universe: The Movie.

She is voiced by Jennifer Paz.

Lapis Lazuli is a Gem who utilizes powerful aquakinetic abilities. She was once poofed by Bismuth, and trapped in a mirror after being mistaken with a Crystal Gem during the war, and used as a tool for around 5,000 years. She was accidently dropped at the Galaxy Warp while Gems were fleeing Earth from the Corrupting Light, and got stepped on, cracking her gem. Around the 1980's, she was discovered by Pearl, who was visiting the Galaxy Warp, and the latter placed the mirror in her gem. Fortunately she was set free by Steven, who was given the mirror by Pearl after she released it. Her release was the focus of "Mirror Gem" and "Ocean Gem". It was revealed that she used to be Blue Diamond's court. She initally resented Garnet, Amethyst, and Pearl for forgetting she was trapped in a mirror and for being the reason why Homeworld mistook her for a Crystal Gem, but after her liberation in "Super Watermelon Island", she has gradually grown to tolerate them for the time being. She loves and respects Steven and has become fiercely protective of him after freeing her. While at first fearful of the prospect of being caught up in another war, after forming bonds with the others and coming to see the Earth as her home, she officially joined the Crystal Gems.

While she is kind, assured, rapturous, thoughtful and enthusiastic with Steven Universe, Lapis Lazuli is a cunning, vindictive, unscrupulous, distrustful and manipulative towards the Crystal Gems, believing they care more about the Earth than their own kind, likely due to them being unaware for so many years about her captivity.

Even more in "Same Old World" where it is revealed when Lapis went to visit Earth she was mistaken for a Crystal Gem and caught as a prisoner by her own kind.

When confronted with an enemy more powerful than herself, she displays a defeatist and worried approach. She believes that putting up a struggle can only make the situation worse. In "The Message", she delivers a frantic message to Steven about the approaching invasion, begging him to submit to the Homeworld should they cross paths. In "Jail Break", she gives similar advice when Steven stumbled across her, mentioning Homeworld might go easy on them if they follow orders. However, Lapis can and will immediately become aggressive, obstreperous, impatient and hostile, if she deems it necessary.

While she is by no means truly evil or outright malicious, she expresses an overwhelming desire to return home, going as far as to use one of the Earth's oceans to create a giant water construct for the purpose of using it as a lift in order to get closer. In doing so, she shows that she can be rather inconsiderate and indifferent, as she does not care about the human race or the Earth, with the exception of Steven. Overall, Lapis is a passionate Gem who does not hesitate to fight anyone who stands against her, but is completely grateful, solicitous and appreciative to Steven for releasing her and then healing her gem despite being pained at her hand. Lapis is also portrayed as being a loyal and praiseworthy martyr to Steven and willing to suffer if it means protecting him from Jasper or any danger in addition to Malachite.

However, she is also shown to be very stubborn, anxious, hesitant and indecisive in cooperating or accepting help from others unless she has no other choice, seen in both "Jail Break", when she refuses to be set free by Steven, and "Chille Tid", where she is reluctant to give the Crystal Gems her location for them to find her and aid in the situation.

Lapis possesses standard Gem abilities, bubbling, shapeshifting, fusion, regeneration, agelessness, and superhuman strength/durability. She is mentally strong, as she is able to overtake Jasper when they are fused.

  • When fused with Jasper, they formed Malachite.

Unique Abilities

  • Hydrokinesis: Lapis appears to have immense power over water and liquid material, demonstrated by her ability to divide a path through the sea and form the entire ocean into a space elevator, and when she juggled a glass of orange juice.
    • Flight: When Lapis' gemstone was healed, it was shown that Lapis can fly using water-wings that extend from her gemstone. These particular water constructs can propel her at high velocities as an evasive maneuver or as a method of transportation. Her wings have the capability to get Lapis all the way to Homeworld in less than a year, possibly even a month. She can not summon her wings with a cracked gem, unlike her other abilities.
    • Water Generation: In addition to manipulating existing liquid, Lapis can generate a certain amount of water from her gem. However, it is unknown whether the water is somehow stored within her gemstone, or if, as an extension of her hydrokinesis, she simply condensed the water molecules in the air into a liquid form.
    • Water Constructs: Lapis is capable of forming water into various constructs that she can control. She has shown to form hands out of water that she can use to smite enemies or use as a platform. She is also able to form chains to entangle or trap enemies with.
    • Water-Walking: Lapis can walk on water, an ability she shares with Pearl, Opal, and Lion.
    • Hydromimicry: Lapis can use her control over water to create flawless, powerful water clones of her enemies. The clones appear to possess the same fighting styles as the originals, as demonstrated by water Garnet's strength and water Amethyst's constant shape-shifting. They also have the ability to regenerate when damaged and even split to create new clones, making them effectively invincible against most attacks. The only thing that has been shown damaging them was a sound wave from Steven's shield.
    • Matter State Manipulation: Lapis is able to change the state of matter of water using her hydrokinetic abilities, causing it to turn into ice. This is first shown when her Crystal Gem water clones create matching weapons of ice.
    • Water Bubbles: Lapis is able to form water bubbles that can contain objects, similar to standard Gem Bubbles, but instead hold liquid.
  • Memory Projection: As shown in "Same Old World", Lapis is able to project any of her memories onto a mirror-like surface, an ability she was still able to use while trapped in the mirror. While she uses this ability, her eyes lose their pupils and become silvery and reflective, similar to how they looked when her gemstone was cracked.
  • Pathokinesis Resistance: Unlike other Gems, due to the variety of traumatic and stressful experiences she has been through, Lapis is shown to be left virtually unaffected by Blue Diamond's incapacitating emotional waves, claiming "I've felt worse."

I'm Lapis... Lapis Lazuli. Are you really a Crystal Gem?
~ Lapis to Steven.
I am Lapis Lazuli, and you can't keep me trapped here anymore!
~ Lapis to the Crystal Gems.
I just want to go home.
~ Lapis to Steven before she was healed.
Wait! You have healing powers?
~ Lapis asking Steven.
Lapis: Thank you, Steven! Steven: No prob, Bob. Lapis: It's Lapis.
~ Steven to called her Bob. before she fly away.
It wasn't relevant to their mission!
~ Lapis to Jasper.
I'm done being everyone's prisoner... Now you're my prisoner, and I'm never letting you go!
~ Lapis to Jasper.
Just let me do this for you!
~ Lapis to Steven.
I'm not Lapis anymore. We're Malachite now.
~ Lapis refused to Jasper.
I guess I can see why you like it.
~ Lapis to Steven.
Yeah. I'm kinda taking a break from water right now. But thanks... for the lake.
~ Lapis to Peridot.
Don't worry, Steven. It's not your fault.
~ Lapis to Steven.
You really weren't kidding.
~ Lapis to Peridot.
Steven, who is this?
~ Lapis to Steven.
Lapis: What are you doing? Greg: Catching the fish!
~ Lapis asks Greg what he's doing.
I was terrible to you. I liked taking everything out on you. I needed you. I-I hated you. It was bad!
~ Lapis to Jasper.
What we had wasn't healthy. I never want to feel like I felt with you! Never again! So just go!
~ Lapis tells Jasper to go.
Even if she wants to be here, she doesn't know what she's getting into. Life on earth is really confusing. It took me a long time to get used to it. I'm still getting used to it.
~ Lapis to Steven.
It's so good to see you. I'm glad you're okay.
~ Lapis tells Steven on the phone.
Good-bye, Steven. Good luck.
~ Lapis hugs Steven and tells him good-bye.
I am not getting caught in the middle of another war.
~ Lapis refuses to stay on earth with Peridot and Steven.
I want to, but I just can't. Not after the way I left. What would Peridot say? What if the Diamonds show up? What if something bad happens?
~ Lapis told Steven she want to come back after she left the earth.
Are you kidding? The moon sucks. There's nothing here. Maybe I'm tired of running away. Maybe I'd rather be with everyone and be in danger than be safe and alone.
~ Lapis told Steven she was tired running away and she rather be everyone in danger safe and alone.
As far from earth as I can. I'm leaving. You should be used to that by now.
~ Lapis told Steven she was leaving.
I've felt worse.
~ Lapis as she resists Blue Diamond's Pathokinesis.
What else have you got? I've only just begun to fight!
~ Lapis before she gets poofed by Yellow Diamond.
That felt great.
~ Lapis as she and Peridot are finally regenerated.
That wasn't strength! That was weakness. Restraint takes strength. PATIENCE takes strength! ... Ugh. I don't have the strength to deal with you.
~ Lapis replying to Mean Lapis.
This is working? You hear us? Steven!
~ Lapis to Steven as she is trying to restore Steven to normal.
I’m gonna use my tears to make a watercolor painting of you.
~ Lapis as she bids farewell to Steven after Steven gives her a watercolor set as a gift.

  • She is the first non-fused gem to be discovered, and not previously established in earlier episodes although Peridot officially joins the Crystal Gems first.
  • Her appearance is a little similar to Pearl's.
  • Lapis has not been shown to summon a physical weapon, aside from her water wings.
    • It is possible that she doesn't have the need to summon a weapon or does not have one at all, as the only weapon she really needs is her ability to control water, namely her wings that are summoned from her gem as they were actual weapons.
  • In mythology, Lapis Lazulis are associated with gods, power, spirit, vision, royalty, honor, wisdom, and truth.
  • Lapis enjoys sleeping.
  • Unlike the other gems, Lapis Lazuli is callus towards Earth and "Same Old World" reveals why she is.
  • Her appearance hinted that the gems may not be from Earth.
    • This was confirmed by Pearl in "Space Race".
  • Even though she no longer aligns with Homeworld, Lapis still wears a diamond on her outfit.
    • This is due to stars being symbols of the Crystal Gems, and Lapis is not a Crystal Gem. Diamonds are the symbols of Homeworld Gems, and Lapis has not reformed since she broke off her ties to Homeworld.
    • She officially becomes a Crystal Gem, as of "Reunited".
  • Like Rose Quartz she goes barefoot until Change your Mind.
