Laris was a female Romulan featured in the first season of Star Trek: Picard. Her name meant "New Day" in the Romulan language. She was possibly a descendant of the Aegis Supervisor Tallinn, who had been stationed on Earth in the early 21st century.

Like Tallinn, she was portrayed by the Irish actress Orla Brady, who also played Lydia in Into the Badlands and Countess Vera Rosakoff in Agatha Christie's Poirot.

Overview[]

Unlike her husband Zhaban, Laris was not a northerner and had a smooth forehead, making her largely indistinguishable from Vulcans.

Biography[]

In keeping with Romulan custom, Laris was promised to Zhaban as a child and the two were later married. Like Zhaban, she became a member of the Tal Shiar. Laris's mother-in-law was her Tal Shiar handler who once drunkenly told her about the Zhat Vash, a secretive group within the Tal Shiar dedicated to the extermination of artificial life. During her time with the Tal Shiar she not only received advanced combat training, but was also trained in forensics and was an expert in forensics.

In the 2380s she and Zhaban worked in cover roles as vineyard workers on Yuvat Beta. When Admiral Jean-Luc Picard and Commander Raffi Musiker were captured by the Romulan Governor Shiana of Yuyat Beta, both she and Zhaban defected to the Federation, rescuing Picard and Musiker. After Picard left Starfleet and Romulus was destroyed, both she and Zhaban relocated to Earth where they went to work for Picard at his Chateau as housekeepers, estate managers, and bodyguards.

After the death of Dajh Asha, Laris and Picard later traveled to Boston to investigate her apartment and found evidence that Zhat Vash were behind the raid on Asha's apartment, which the original forensic investigators had not found.

Later, when Zhat Vash operatives assaulted Picard's home in an attempt to kill Picard, Laris and Zhaban put their advanced combat training to good use in defending Picard from the team, managing to capture one of the Romulans in the process. Zhaban was stopped from killing the unconscious Romulan by Laris and Picard. When the Romulan woke up the three tried to interrogate the Romulan but he stubbornly remained silent, leading Laris to label him as a "stubborn northerner" like her husband. The Zhat Vash agent still refused to answer and then committed suicide.

When Picard left to find and save Soji Asha from the Zhat Vash, Laris and Zhaban remained behind on Earth to continue running Chateau Picard. The pair continued working for Picard after he returned to Earth in a new synthetic body that did not have the brain abnormality that killed Picard's original body. Her husband passed away in 2400, leaving her and Picard behind, who both greatly missed his presence. At that point the friendship was at the cusp of developing into something deeper, but Picard was called away by Starfleet to help investigate a spatial anomaly.

Laris continued to live with Picard throughout the first decade of the 25th century. By 2411 she and Picard were planning to relocate to Chaltok IV as she was planning to take a job as a security consultant and Picard was planning to spend his time sitting on the beach watching the world go by. After Picard received a distress call from Beverly Crusher he played it for Laris, who felt Crusher was in serious trouble and told Picard to go help his friend.

Alternate Timelines[]

In a timeline where Earth became a dictatorship called the Confederation of Earth after Q changed human history, Laris and her husband Zhaban both died on Romulus, fighting to free the Romulan people from being enslaved by the humans.
