Leanne Battersby is a fictional character and central protagonist of the ITV British soap opera Coronation Street.

She was introduced in 1997 as a member of the Battersby family who were initially troublesome up to the point of causing problems for the neighbours. However, as time went on, Leanne mellowed into a more respectful individual and became involved in several major issue storylines.

The character is portrayed by Jane Danson.

Biography[]

Leanne Battersby first came to Weatherfield in 1997 along with her father Les, his wife Janice, and their stepdaughter Toyah.

Upon arrival, Leanne and her family annoyed the neighbours by playing loud music and stealing. Janice attempted to help her daughter sort her life out by getting her a job at Underworld but Leanne got the sack after setting the fire alarm off while cleaning in the toilets. Leanne dated Nick Tilsley though his family opposed it as they wanted him to be with someone more respectable. Ultimately the relationship ended when Leanne got pregnant and Nick convinced her to get an abortion.

Leanne became friends with Zoe Tattersall and tried to help her after she sold her baby to The Mallets.

Leanne became addicted to drugs and got in debt to Jez Quigley who then tormented her. She was blackmailed into helping steal from the rovers but backed out and was landed in hospital. Leanne felt guilty about stealing money from Mike Baldwin to fund her habit and returned it to him. Ultimately Leanne left to escape from Jez.

In 2004 Les found Leanne working in a lap dancing club and made her quit. She then moved back in with Janice. Leanne later dated Jamie Baldwin but had an affair with his father Danny who she then plotted with to take Underworld by taking advantage of Mike's dementia. When Danny finished things with Leanne because of his love for his wife Frankie she took revenge by blackmailing him with Mike's latest version of the will and then gave it to his half brother Adam Barlow.

Leanne then left but returned in 2007, working as an escort. Shen then dated Liam Connor while having his brother Paul as a client at the same time. Leanne went into business with Paul's wife Carla to open a restaurant which led to Leanne being exposed when one of her clients told Carla the truth which cost her the business arrangement. When Paul was dumped by Carla he blamed Leanne and kidnapped her. Things got even worse for her when Liam learned of her profession and ended things.

Leanne went ahead with opening the business herself and began seeing bookmaker Dan Mason despite her employee Paul Clayton having feelings for her. Leanne took advantage of Paul, promising him a relationship as a reward if he burnt down the restaurant for the insurance. When Paul realised he was used he informed the police but Leanne and Dan covered for each other. Paul then fled the country to escape the law.

Leanne's good side came out more during her relationship with Peter Barlow as she supported him throughout his alcoholism and became a mother figure to his son Simon. Their relationship survived Leanne's affair with Nick but did not survive Peter's dalliance with Carla which then led to Leanne getting back with Nick. By that point, Leanne also reconnected with her half sister Eva Price and her biological mother Stella.

Leanne and Nick were set to get married again but Peter tried to convince her to take him back. She came to take him up on the offer but found Carla in his bed and then chose to marry Nick after all but Eva who had feelings for Nick revealed that she had tried to get back with Peter. This then resulted in Nick getting drunk and sleeping with Kylie Platt who was married to his half brother David.

David later gave Nick brain damage while trying to stop him from revealing the hate campaign he'd been behind. Leanne stood by Nick but he finished the relationship out of fear he'd hurt her and Simon. Leanne then got another boyfriend Kal Nazir but he died when the two of them saved Amy Barlow from a fire. With all of the events in his life taking a toll on him Simon began to torment and physically abuse Leanne which she refused to tell anyone about out of loyalty to her stepson. When Leanne finally brought herself to report Simon his behaviour did end up improving.

Leanne slept with Steve McDonald who got her pregnant. Things got complicated when Leanne got back together with Nick and became friends with Steve's wife Michelle Connor who was also pregnant with his child. This ultimately resulted in Leanne giving birth to Steve's son Oliver and Nick leaving after realising that he didn't like the person he was becoming thanks to his feuds with Peter and Steve.

Michelle and Leanne were somewhat reconciled when Leanne and Steve saved her from her ex Will who'd been stalking her. Leanne later got back together with Nick and reluctantly supported his attempts to pin the blame on David for stealing money from their grandmother Audrey Roberts. Nick came clean but still got a lenient punishment.

When Oliver became sick Leanne and Steve were devastated and eventually consented to having him taken off life support. Leanne initially resented Nick's newly discovered son Sam Blakeman but ultimately accepted Sam and started treating him as one of her own children.
