Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan (born Leia Amidala Skywalker; later Leia Skywalker Organa Solo; and commonly referred to as simply Princess Leia) is one of the main characters of the Star Wars franchise. She is the benevolent, courageous and headstrong Princess of Alderaan and one of the major leaders of the Rebel Alliance.
She is the daughter of Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, the younger twin sister of Luke Skywalker, the wife of Han Solo and mother of Ben Solo.
In the Legends timeline, she is the mother of Jaina, Jacen and Anakin Solo, the sister-in-law of Mara Jade Skywalker, the aunt of Ben Skywalker, the grandmother of Allana Djo Solo and an ancestor of Roan Fel, Marasiah Fel and Ania Solo.
She was portrayed by the late Carrie Fisher (who also voiced Angela in Family Guy), in both the original trilogy and the sequel trilogy, Vivien Lyra Blair as a child in the Kenobi series and Aidan Barton (who also voiced baby Luke in the same film) as an infant Leia in Revenge of the Sith. For Rogue One, Leia was portrayed by Ingvild Deila, with Fisher's features digitally superimposed over Deila, and for The Rise of Skywalker, Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd provided motion capture. She was also voiced by Julie Dolan in Star Wars Rebels, who also voiced baby Prince James in Sofia the First.
Personality[]
In contrast with most fictional princesses, Leia was far from a shrinking violet or a damsel in distress. She was strong-willed, intelligent, hot-headed, feisty, sassy, and most of all, brave. She was fearless and prepared to risk it all for the sake of restoring freedom to the galaxy. When she was held prisoner, she was not afraid, to the point of even mocking her captors. Even in the face of some of the most feared men in the galaxy such as Grand Moff Tarkin and Darth Vader, she showed no fear and remained steadfast in her mission. The only person to have ever made Leia feel fear was the Emperor himself.
Leia was also a highly skilled soldier and general who preferred to fight in the heat of battle alongside her soldiers. When cornered by stormtroopers she preferred to fight back as opposed to surrender. The moment she was freed by Luke and his allies, she immediately grabbed a blaster and started gunning down enemies. This bravery and fearlessness should not, however, be mistaken for recklessness, as Leia was also an extremely intelligent and calculating individual. She managed to aid the Rebel cause for years before being caught. Moments after she rescued, she deduced that the best way to escape was through the garbage shoot. She helped plan both the Battle of Hoth and the evacuation of Echo Base, as well as personally fighting in the Battle of Endor.
While she was brave, battle hardened and hot headed, she was also very compassionate, kind, loving, caring, and understanding. She deeply loving and affectionate her friends and allies, especially her brother Luke Skywalker and her husband Han Solo. Though she initially disliked Chewbacca, the two later developed a deep friendship. She also shows her kind side again on Endor befriending Wickett and the other Ewoks. She often gave her close friends and family hugs and kisses as a means of emotional support and a way to wish them luck. As a mother, in both timelines, she deeply loved her children and when Ben/Jacen fell to the dark side she was heartbroken.
In essence, Leia was a great hero, leader and role model; a defining example of what all heroes should strive to be, male or female. These traits make her one of, if not the greatest heroine in cinema.
Powers and Abilities[]
Powers[]
- Force Powers: As the daughter of the Chosen One, Leia had a strong connection to the force before she gained her potential under Luke's tutelage. She was able to sense Luke's presence on Bespin, that he wasn't on the Death Star II when it was destroyed, and later admitted to Skywalker that she always sensed that she was related to him. When becoming Luke's apprentice, Leia became skilled with the force, being able to use it to survive being killed in the vacuum of space, and preserve her conscious after death.
Abilities[]
- Leadership: Leia shows herself to be a capable leader, having led the Rebel Alliance and the Resistance against the Galactic Empire and the First Order.
- Indomitable Will: Leia demonstrated immense willpower, being able to resist the serum given to her during Darth Vader's interrogation. Despite witnessing the destruction of her homeworld, Leia turned her anguish into determination to stop the Galactic Empire.
- Master Strategist: She is a capable strategist, being able to plan infiltration missions or trick her enemies.
- Master Politician: Leia was renowned for her diplomatic skills, capable of gaining the trust of many due to her charisma and leadership skills.
- Marksmanship: Leia is a capable marksman, being able to use a blaster and other weaponry with prophecy.
- Piloting skills: Receiving flight training at an early age, Leia proved herself to be a skilled pilot, such as being able to fly the Millennium Falcon when escaping from Hoth.
- Lightsaber Combatant: Though not on par with her brother, Leia was skilled with a lightsaber to that point that she could best him during training. In her legends counterpart, Leia was a capable duelist, handing herself against Darth Vader, Beldorion and Tahiri Veila.
- Combat Skill: As a teenager, Leia learned to shoot a Drearian Defense Conglomerate Defender sports blaster pistol, often wielded by aristocrats of her social status. Once she turned sixteen, Leia was allowed to receive martial training with a personal instructor – her family had deemed it necessary for her to learn the basics of self-defense, given her royal status and the risk of kidnapping. She really enjoyed this workout, which not only made her feel physically strong, but also allowed her to release the tension of her etiquette lessons. Thanks to her instructor, Leia learned to keep her mind clear and focused on the moment. On one occasion, Leia was fighting one of her family's servants out of town, instead of in language class, when her father came to pick her up.

Trivia[]
- Like her father and brother, Leia was sometimes short-tempered, hot-headed, headstrong, emotionally insecure, and impatient; albeit to a lesser existence. She also inherited her mother's fearlessness and stubbornness. Despite this, Leia was one of the most big hearted and compassionate characters of the Star Wars franchise. And, like her mother and brother, was able to see the good in others. As she saw the heart in Rey despite knowing about her true lineage, holding faith in the good inside of her son Ben Solo, saving her brother from the dark side in Dark Empire, showing compassion for Boba Fett despite the latter attempting to kill her husband numerous times, and believing Mara Jade had good in her during the Heir to the Empire trilogy.
- After Fisher's death on December 27, 2016, Star Wars Episode VIII director Rian Johnson confirmed that Fisher had shot all of her scenes and Leia would appear in Episode VIII. While Fisher's daughter and brother both granted Lucasfilm permission to use Fisher's likeness in future films, the producers had already ruled out using CGI to recreate Fisher for future films.
- Originally, with VII being Han's film and VIII being Luke's film IX was originally going to focus heavily on Leia, and she would serve as Rey's Jedi Master in the film. Fisher's death forced producers to change the story. It was revealed that, with her family's blessing, unused footage that Carrie filmed in The Force Awakens and Last Jedi would be used in The Rise of Skywalker, so that even though Carrie died in 2016, her character would still be alive in the trilogy and Leia's story could be wrapped up properly.
- In "Legends", Leia was reluctant to forgive Anakin, but after learning his backstory as a slave, Leia forgave him and named her second son after him.
