My cause is to keep this town from turning into a living hell for the folks who live here. Whole world has problems, mister, and I'm here, doing what I can.
~ Marshal Leigh Johnson
Agreed. That man is a stone-cold killer.
~ Leigh Johnson's response after John Marston said that it is important to stop Bill Williamson.

He was voiced by Anthony De Longis

Biography[]

Background[]

Born in 1860, Leigh Johnson initially never had interest in police work but was then later appointed as the district marshal of the town of Armadillo in 1897. Additionally, he would marry a woman named Priscilla Johnson, who died on April 23, 1903. In 1907, both Marshal Leigh Johnson and the majority of the town's citizens were temporarily absent due to a cholera outbreak. Despite Marshal Johnson's efforts and work to prevent Armadillo from turning into "a living hell," he barely receives any appreciation from the residents and is even suspected of engaging in actions like corruption. He is in charge of Jonah and Eli, two of his most loyal deputies, and an Unnamed Deputy who appears only in the mission "The Assault on Fort Mercer."

In October 1911, Johnson had become quite pessimistic as a result of the rising violence in New Austin. His attitude was worsened by the Southwestern Railroad Company's recent actions, which were burning down communities and threatening Leigh that they'll reduce his salary if he does not turn a blind eye. At some point before November 1914, Marshal Leigh Johnson had taken down some infamous outlaws throughout New Austin during his career. He participated in putting down the Two Crows Boys, One-Lung Lester Riley, and Wildcat Willie.

Red Dead Redemption[]

While Jonah and John Marston were arguing in his office, he showed up, calmed the two, and ordered Jonah to leave. He and John later then had a conversation about Bill Williamson until he talked about some people who are always in the Armadillo Saloon, who get drunk and proceed to threaten the whole town. John Marston then helps Marshal Johnson to take care of who these people are at the saloon and says they can talk more about Bill later. Leigh then says that the two individuals causing this mess are outlaws who are led by Walton. They then realize that the gang leader, Walton, was in the saloon. Marshal Johnson and Marston then tailed Walton down until they arrived at his gang's hideout, where they were attacked by his gang upon arriving. Fortunately, they were able to finish the gangsters off and capture Walton.

Marshal Johnson is seen again in his office testing out a telephone and isn't very skilled with it until he and John are interrupted by Eli, who informs them that he witnessed some rustling done by the Bollard Twins and Mexicans. He, his deputies, and John then ride their horses and arrive at the canyon and are attacked by the Bollard Gang, who were waiting for them. Johnson and his group successfully wiped out the Bollard Gang and rescued the ranch hands who were held hostage.

He was seen again preparing guns until John Marston arrived and requested him to ride with them and investigate areas near Ridgewood Farm where people were killed and the women raped by some bandits. They were able to figure out that the bandits actually went into Ridgewood Farm and upon arrival, they noticed that the place looked empty until they checked the barn out only to see a man who was hanged and were told by a woman that the bandits were in the house where her family was being held hostage. They were able to finish off the bandits and save the hostages. Johnson and his group go to a nearby shed with more hostages and are told the bandits went to the south. The hostages complained about him, saying that he was supposed to protect them and accusing him of just being part of a government payroll, although he's seen to feel sympathetic to the women. They then went south and realized it was bandits from the Williamson Gang. They got attacked by the Gang and they took cover in an abandoned shack nearby. Marshal and his group were able to defend themselves and take out the bandits who were attacking them. They then encounter Norman Deek, who is badly injured and crawling on the ground. Marshal Johnson kicks his head and takes him to jail.

While Leigh, John, and Drew MacFarlane were discussing the whereabouts of his daughter, Bonnie MacFarlane, Johnson gets called out by a bandit from the Williamson gang outside and warns the three that if they don't get Norman Deek back, they will torture and rape Bonnie to death. Marshal Johnson had to release Norman and bring him to Tumbleweed together with John and his deputies for Bonnie's safety, only to find out that they were set up. They then eliminated the outlaws and were able to save Bonnie from getting hanged.

Before attacking Fort Mercer, Marshal Johnson, his deputies, West Dickens, and Irish meet John on a nearby hill and were preparing. After the attack has started, Marshal and his deputies arrive and inform John that the remaining bandits were able to escape from the other side. They were able to eliminate the fleeing bandits and regrouped until Eli told them to let Nigel West Dickens in and Leigh ordered Jonah to let Dickens inside. Nigel then informs them that reinforcements are coming to attack them. After John finishes off the bandits, Marshal Leigh Johnson apologizes to John for not being able to find Bill and gives a farewell to his journey to Mexico, never to be encountered again.

Epilogue[]

Leigh Johnson retires as the marshal of Armadillo in 1914 after 17 years of service. He plans on leaving the town as far as possible after being interviewed by a journalist.

Undead Nightmares[]

Leigh Johnson was seen trying to calm a zombie in his jail cell to prevent it from biting the criminal until it bit him and Johnson had no choice but to kill the two. He orders John to find his two deputies, Jonah and Eli, who were supposed to guard the town and look for survivors but went missing. When John returned and informed the marshal that his deputies were infected and had to be killed, he let John keep Jonah's sawed-off shotgun and accept the fates of his two loyal deputies.

Personality[]

Marshal Leigh Johnson is calm yet strict and is a no-nonsense, straight-to-the-point person and is barely worried about getting aggressive at any time. He maintains a strong moral compass and exhibits a deep sense of duty; however, he wouldn't mind doing questionable actions during missions at times. In a conversation with John, while he doesn't protect the whole of New Austin, he deeply cares about the people of Armadillo, as he does not want them to suffer so it's his job to protect the town. He is also shown to be an expert shooter at all of the missions he's in and is even implied to be as fast as John. He is also shown to be polite and confident despite having a rough background and is even theorized to be a former outlaw.
