Lian-Chu is the main protagonist of the Dragon Hunters series. He is a sword-wielding, muscle-bound warrior who actually deals out the dragon slaying. In contrast to Gwizdo, he is more kindhearted and honorable. He is also an avid knitter. In the 2008 cartoon he was voiced by Forest Whitaker who voiced of Ernest from Ernest & Celestine.
Appearance[]
Lian-Chu is a phenomenally tall and brutal young man with the physique of a powerful warrior. He can be recognized by his enormous biceps, short legs, small and narrow eyes, long black ponytail, narrow dangling moustashe and a big chin. His genotype is seemingly close to Southeast Asian. In his behavior, he is distinguished by equanimity and economy of movement which covers great strength and dexterity. He usually wears tight-fitting combat clothing in dark cherry shades with a fur-skin vest and a chest disk.
Biography[]
Lian-Chu was Born in Ke-Chan on the south island Vertlombrick. In his early childhood, he became an orphan when a huge Dragon destroyed his whole village. In the mother Hubbard's farm he showed himself as a nice and diligent boy who enjoyed the respect of other children for his natural strength. However, from these times only the lonely Gwizdo became his friend for years. In the comics, it is known that in adolescence Lian-Chu had a coach, with whom he had metin the forest - Grolok, the mighty wandering dragon hunter, who passed on his skills and combat knowledge to the boy before leaving for the last hunt.
At first, when Lian-Chu starts fighting dragons for a reward, farmers don't take him seriously because of his soft temper despite his size, but his fighting skills and dexterous way of moving already can be considered unique. Thanks to his acquaintance with little Zoe, he successfully kills the dragon who burned his village. During the early period of his career, he also avenges for Grolok to the mighty and legendary dragon, Red Bucaramanga. Finally, he practices as a mentor towards Zoe, patiently teaching her dragon fighting skills.
Year after year, Lian-Chu defeats one dragon after another with grace and ease. However, his ambitions remain quite modest. According to the recent events, both Gwizdo and Lian-Chu are highly competent dragon hunters who got professional license not long ago. Perpetually flat broke, they are forced to continually stay at the Snoring Dragon Inn until they can get another dragon-hunting contract to pay their rent.
Personality[]
Lian-Chu sincerely likes to protect the weak since his childhood. His cool-headed and warm-hearted personality makes contrast to Gwizdo's troublesome temper and cowardice. With all of that they're still the best of friends. It is important to mention that Grolok's lessons made Lian-Chu a strong, responsible and disciplined warrior while constant work on the farm under the guidance of Mother Hubbard instilled in him a persistent habit of working in his spare time (not counting his time for eating, sleeping and meditation).
According to the full-length movie, in his early to mid twenties Lian-Chu is seen as a very shy and a bit clumsy guy, whose mind can be called semi-childish. But closer to the culmination, he gains the confidence and a sense of dignity, thanks to Zoe's enthusiasm and Gwizdo's later support.
In both of the first comics, Lian-Chu actively gets acquainted with the dark sides of human nature when his team enters the territories of initially hostile tribes. At some point, he is forced to kill an entire army of people infected with dragon spores and finally gives way to tears. All events indicate that the misadventures of his team have become for him an even more serious argument than for Gwizdo for deciding to settle in the Snoring Dragon Inn for years.
As it is seen in the cartoon series, Lian-Chu still combines courage and naivety the bizarre way. Usually he relies on Gwizdo's intelligence among the people, to not be cheated. Despite their long friendship the big guy hasn't learned to read for three decades and can count only to 10. Fortunately, his housework in the tavern is always appreciated. Lian-Chu is very kind and attentive to his pet combat assistant, Hector as well as stays protective to the people, especially children. He doesn't hesitate to ask questions to his friends if he feels that he doesn't understand something in everyday life. At the same time, his vigilance towards dragon threats can be considered impeccable, although the big guy often gives the false impression of excessive relaxation when others are scared. In his early to mid thirties, Lian-Chu already can be called a rare genius in his flexible intuitive approach to fighting dragons of all stripes and properties.
Trivia[]
- In the original TV cartoon version of Dragon Hunters, Lian-Chu looks more like what would it be if Warner Bros. animated him, but in the 3D/CGI film version, he looks more like a typical DreamWorks character due to the film's realistic settings. In fact, Futurikon produced both versions in France and Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. Discovery's subsidiary, aired the series in the US.
