Lieutenant Dan (real name Dan Taylor) is a supporting character in the 1994 dramedy film Forrest Gump. He is a former military man. Throughout the film, Forrest tries to help Dan find peace with God.
He is portrayed by Gary Sinise.
Dan was first met by Gump in an army camp in Vietnam. There, he tells Forrest and his friend Bubba about basic rules. Later, he was saved by Forrest, much to his chagrin. After a while, Dan got mad at Forrest because he believed Forrest ruined his "destiny".
Eventually, the two became friends and Forrest took care of Dan, who had lost his legs in battle. Later, Dan became Forrest's first mate and co-worker in the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. Later, Dan baptized himself and later invested in Apple, making both Forrest and Dan rich. A few years later, Dan went to go to Forrest's wedding, where he met Forrest's wife Jenny and Forrest met Dan's fiancée Susan.
Dan is first shown as a grumpy and suicidal lieutenant. When Forrest saved him, he became an angry, hopeless, depressed man who really needed Forrest's help. He later became a cocky albeit peaceful man when he became Forrest's first mate.
- For his performance, Gary Sinise was given an Oscar nomination.
- The work to remove Dan's legs helped the film win an Oscar for best visual effects.
