~ Lillie to Silvally and overcoming her fear in the process. |
Lillie (Japanese: リーリエ Lilie) is one of the supporting characters who appeared in the anime, Pokémon the Series. She first meets Ash Ketchum in Alola, and she becomes a traveling companion with the rest of his classmates. She once had no issue with touching Pokémon when she was younger at the time, she was playing with a Clefairy (which later evolved into Clefable by her mother, Lusamine against her wishes). It wasn't until Nihilego appeared through an Ultra Wormhole and abducts her until she was saved by Silvally. She hardly remembers the events, yet she took up an aversion to touching any kind of Pokémon she comes across. She will often either freeze in fear, flee, or scream in terror if she came in contact with one.
She was voiced by Kei Shindo in the Japanese version, and by Laurie Hymes (who also voices the titular character in MAVKA: The Forest Song), in the English version.
Personality[]
Lillie is a polite, sweet and humble girl from a wealthy upbringing, who shows her concern for others. She was traumatized when she was a child when a Nihilego tried to kidnap her, thankfully Silvally saved her right on cue. As a result, she became scared of any Pokémon who approaches her personal space. Should she be in close proximity with a Pokémon, she wears a suit full of diving gear to avoid making contact with them. When her classmates point out her fear, she denies it by saying she avoids Pokémon by her own free will until she finally concedes to her inability. In spite of this, she enjoys studying about Pokémon from a researcher's perspective while being at a safe distance. In "Getting to Know You", her Alolan Vulpix, named Snowy hatched out of her Pokémon egg and she became comfortable with touching her own Pokémon, Ash's Pikachu, and eventually a Stoutland ride Pokémon.
Despite her progress, her memory resurfaces and assumes that Silvally attacked her when that was not the case, and she regresses to the point that she cannot touch Snowy. She finally remembers that Silvally was the one who saved her as a child and manages to overcome her fear and is determined more than ever to make contact with as much Pokémon as she possibly can.
While Lillie lacks athletic prowess, she makes up for it with her intellect and knowledge. She looks up to Ash Ketchum due to his upbeat personality, and love for Pokémon as she sees him as her role model. This is evident throughout her battles against her butler Hobbes, and when she assisted a wild Alolan Sandshrew in a battle against a wild Tyranitar who was trespassing its home.
She has changed greatly during her time in the Pokémon school with her classmates, but her tendency to bring up information she learned in books remains. She is now courageous, optimistic, upbeat and she is not afraid to speak her mind even if it meant standing up to or defending her family and friends.
