~ Majora's Mask Prologue. |
“ | A sword wields no strength unless the hand that holds it has courage. You may be destined to become the hero of legend...but your current power would disgrace the proud green of the hero's tunic you wear. You must use your courage to seek power...and find it you must. Only then will you become the hero for whom this world despairs. | „ |
~ Young Link as The Hero's Shade to The Hero of Twilight. |
Link, also known as the Hero of Time and Young Link, is the main protagonist of the 1998 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and its 2000 sequel The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, as well as the overarching protagonist of their 2006 sequel The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
He was originally believed a Kokiri but is in truth a Hylian orphan from the Hyrulean Civil War that was later taken in and raised by the Kokiri. He eventually sets out on a journey to stop the evil forces of Ganondorf and save Hyrule and its princess, Zelda, being the chronological first incarnation of Link to do so. Upon his final battle with Ganon, he is either defeated by the Demon King or succeeds in defeating him, at which point he returns to his past to warn Hyrule of the potential future that would occur and to relive his lost time.
In both instances, however, he was never present to save Hyrule and his heroic deeds would be forgotten. Lamenting in regret, he would continue to live on as a spirit known as the Hero's Shade, where he would dedicate the rest of his life passing his skills onto his descendant.
He is voiced by Fujiko Takimoto (who also voiced Toon Link and Link from The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past/Four Swords and in The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap) on the Game Boy Advance, the Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube and Nintendo 3DS respectively while his adult form and his Fierce Deity form are voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama who also voices his mainstream counterpart from Soul Calibur II GameCube version and voiced the anti-hero BlackWarGreymon in the Japanese version of Digimon Adventure 02.
Appearance[]
Young Link's physical characteristics fluctuate from game to game, though he usually has blonde hair, blue eyes, and a medium build. Like all Hyruleans, he has elf-like ears. He typically wears a green tunic and hat.
Other Media[]
Super Smash Bros. Series[]
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
Young Link is a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee where he is unlocked by either completing Classic Mode or Adventure Mode with 10 different characters, or by completing 500 VS. Mode matches. Once the player has fulfilled these requirements, they will face Young Link on the Great Bay stage. Victory means unlocking him.
His fighting style is a modified duplicate of Link's. His reach is shorter than adult Link's, but his arrows can set opponents on fire and momentarily stun them. Additionally, Young Link has more control over his boomerang than Link. His Hookshot is also shorter but can still grapple on to edges. His Spin Attack is faster than Link's, hits multiple times and draws in opponents close to it. Young Link uses a Deku Shield; however, it does not burn when it comes in contact with fire. Like Link, his shield can block projectiles when standing still. Unlike Link, Young Link can do wall jumps.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
After being replaced by Toon Link in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Smash 4, Young Link once again returns as an unlockable character in this game. He can be unlocked either by completing Classic Mode after unlocking Simon Belmont, by playing a certain number of Vs. matches or through Adventure Mode: World of Light, where he can be found in the World of Darkness section.
For his newly added Final Smash, Young Link is given the Triforce Slash which originally belonged to Link himself in Brawl and SSB4 before having it replaced by Breath of the Wild's Ancient Arrows in Ultimate.
Hyrule Warriors[]
Young Link appears as a DLC character in Hyrule Warriors Legends. However, he is instead added as an unlockable character in Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition where he can be unlocked in Adventure Mode by successfully completing the battle on G-9.
Young Link is a dark type warrior who uses Masks primarily as his move set gimmick while also wielding Majora's Mask's rendition of the Kokiri sword.
Soul Calibur II GameCube version[]
Link appears as an adult and serves as a playable character, as well as an guest character in the exclusive GameCube version of Soul Calibur II with Nobuyuki Hiyama reprising his role of Link the Hero of Time in the GameCube version of Soul Calibur II. This Link is the same from Ocarina of Time who appears as an adult, he grabs the Master Sword, his Hylian Shield and his Ocarina of Time to go on a mission to rescue Siegfrield from Soul Edge's corruption after being sent by Princess Zelda. After rescuing Siegfrield and defeating Raphael Sorel, Link fought against Inferno and Soul Edge and destroy them, leaving Soul Edge lying down planted on the ground, Link later appears in Weapon Master when he must imprison Soul Edge in a frozen prison once and for all to protect both Hyrule and the world.
Mask Transformations[]
Deku Link[]
As Deku Link, Young Link can fire bubbles at balloons or enemies from afar and can perform a spin attack to harm his foes or stun them for a certain period of time. He can also use Deku Flowers to achieve flight for a short time and drop Deku Nuts upon anything below him.
Goron Link[]
As Goron Link, Young Link assumes Darmani III's role by rolling to attack the enemies with spike attacks. He can also participate in Goron Race organized by Goron Elder's son.
Zora Link[]
As Zora Link, Young Link assumes Mikau's role after Mikau (in spirit form) encourages him to help Lulu to regain her voice again. He can attack enemies with the Double Cutters, swim freely through the water, and damage enemies with an electric barrier.
Giant Link[]
As Giant Link, Young Link grows into a titan and can use his sword to attack Twinmold in the Nintendo 64 version of Majora's Mask. However, in the Nintendo 3DS remake, Giant Link can destroy Twinmold and his baby insectoid monsters with his bare hands instead. Giant Link is used only in the Stone Tower Temple boss fight (as seen in both consoles).
Fierce Deity Link[]
As Fierce Deity Link, Young Link takes the shape of his adult self, but his size is much taller than normal. This form can only be used during boss fights, though certain glitches allow Link to take on this form anywhere in Termina.
Quotes[]
“ | You have at last mastered all of the hidden skills. Although I accepted life as the hero, I could not convey the lessons of that life to those who came after. At last, I have eased those regrets. You who have marched through countless foes, each mightier then the last... You who now gaze to the future with vision unclouded... Surely you can restore Hyrule to its stature of yore as the chosen land of the gods... Farewell! Go and do not falter, my child! | „ |
~ Link's last words before he finally rests in peace knowing his descendant is ready to succeed him. |
