Link, also known as the Hero of Winds and Toon Link, is the titular main protagonist of the 2002 action-adventure game The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and the main protagonist of its 2007 sequel The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.
He is a ten-year-old boy living on Outset Island in the middle of the Great Sea, centuries after the gods flooded Hyrule. After his younger sister, Aryll, is abducted by a giant bird, Link teams up with a pirate named Tetra and a talking boat known as the King of Red Lions to sail the Great Sea and rescue her. However, he soon becomes embroiled in the legacy of the Hero of Time, leading him on a fated quest to face the dreaded warlord Ganondorf.
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl and in Super Smash Bros. 4, he serves as a replacement for Young Link in Super Smash Bros. Melee. However, he appeared in the Hyrule Warriors franchise as one of the playable characters.
He is voiced by Sachi Matsumoto, who previously voiced the Skull Kid.
Appearance[]
Toon Link is stated to be incredibly misshapen, with blocky body parts and a bloated head. It's from this appearance that Toon derived his name.
Aside from this distortion, Toon Link looks identical to other versions of Link, with pale skin and medium length blonde hair. He's even been dressed in a green tunic and cap just like the other incarnations of Link.

Super Smash Bros. series[]
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
Toon Link was first introduced as a playable newcomer character his Super Smash Bros. debut, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and is a semi-clone character of returning veteran Link. He replaced Young Link, a character from Melee who was cut in Brawl. Sachi Matsumoto reprises her role as Toon Link in all regions of the game, albeit using a combination of re-recorded voice clips and ones that were leftover from the recording sessions for The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.
Toon Link is an unlockable playable character and must be unlocked before the player can use him. There are three different methods in unlocking him: the first method is to clear Classic Mode with any character on any difficulty after completing the story mode, The Subspace Emissary. The second is to play 400 Brawl matches, making Toon Link the second-to-last character unlocked through Brawl matches after Jigglypuff and before Wolf. The third and final method is to find Toon Link in The Forest stage after completing The Subspace Emissary. It can be found by entering a secret door close to the beginning of the level. Note that this method will not show the challenger approaching screen, as that is replaced by a cutscene of Toon Link challenging the player.
He is an optional character in The Subspace Emissary, along with Jigglypuff and Wolf, who can only be unlocked after the mode has been completed. Upon defeating Toon Link on Pirate Ship, he will be introduced as a new addition to the player's team. He does not have an actual role in the overall plot.
Toon Link has six alternate costume choices besides his default costume. His red, blue, and purple alts are based on Red, Blue, and Purple Link from The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords and The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, respectively. His brown alt is based on Link's debut appearance from the original game, while his black alt is based on Dark Link and the Dark Interlopers from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.
Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U[]
Toon Link serves as a returning character in Smash 4. He was announced in a Director's Room Miiverse post on September 26, 2013, which also commemorated The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD being released in Japan on the same day. He appears as a starter playable character in both versions. Being ranked 23rd out of 54th on the tier list, this places him in the C tier. This is a slight drop from his mid-tier placement in Brawl, where he was ranked 13th out of 38th. However, due to the SSB4 tier list structure, Toon Link is actually rendered as a high-tier character.
All of Toon Link's alternate costumes from Brawl return in Smash 4, in addition to him receiving two new alts for a total of eight alts. His first new alt gives him a gray tunic which resembles Link's tunic with the Blue Ring equipped in the original The Legend of Zelda. His second is based on Link's appearance in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and its sequel The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Ultimate, Toon Link returns as a veteran character, classified as Fighter #43. Instead of being playable by default like he was in Smash 4, he is unlockable, as with his Brawl counterpart. Toon Link was absent from the World of Light opening cutscene, although he was vaporized and imprisoned by Galeem. In World of Light, he is found in the Forest Hill sub-area of The Light Realm. To awaken him, the player must activate a nearby switch which extends the bridge and defeat the spirit of Zelda (Breath of the Wild) that's in front of him.
In Classic Mode, Toon Link is the last character unlocked in his original incarnation's unlock tree after Richter. In Smash, he is the 44th character unlocked after Bayonetta and before Rosalina & Luma.
Toon Link's Classic Mode campaign is called "The Teamwork of Courage", where he fights along with two CPU Toon Link teammates in every battle, likely referencing The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. Toon Link fights characters from different universes in each stage. If playing Classic Mode in Co-op, one CPU Toon Link will still appear. The boss of this route is Ganon, as with every other playable Legend of Zelda character in Ultimate, besides Ganondorf himself. Clearing Classic Mode as Toon Link will have Hyrule Main Theme accompany the credits.
All of Toon Link's alternate costumes return from SSB4 and remain unchanged.
