Hero Overview

But then, when all hope had died, and the hour of doom seemed at hand... a young boy clothed in green appeared as if from nowhere. Wielding the blade of evil's bane, he sealed the dark one away and gave the land light.
~ The prologue of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker on Link.
Whether skyward bound, adrift in time, or steeped in the glowing embers of twilight, the sacred blade is forever bound to the soul of the Hero.
~ Princess Zelda describing Link and his past adventures.

Link is the main protagonist of The Legend of Zelda franchise.

He is the legendary Hero of Hyrule who is chosen to defend the land from evil in all it's many forms, as well as the protector and love interest of Princess Zelda.

Through his many incarnations, he has been portrayed as a silent and courageous adventurer who battles monsters, explores dungeons, helps others, and routinely saves Hyrule from the evil forces of his arch-nemesis, the evil Demon King Ganon. Link’s heroism isn't limited to Hyrule, however; he travels across the world, through time, and between dimensions to protect and aid anyone he can.

He was originally voiced by Nobuyuki Hiyama in Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask and their remakes, Super Smash Bros. 64 and Melee and Soul Calibur II, who would later voice Erdrick in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, marking his first role in the series after 18 years. Link was then voiced by Akira Sasanuma in Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and SSB4, Takashi Ōhara in Skyward Sword and Mario Kart 8/Deluxe, Mitsuki Saiga in A Link Between Worlds, Tri Force Heroes and the Link's Awakening remake, who also voiced the Luminary in Dragon Quest XI and Ultimate and Yuki Kaji, who also voiced Link in Hyrule Warriors and Eight in Ultimate.

Mario Kart[]

Link appears in Mario Kart 8 as a downloadable playable character, he is the same Link from Skyward Sword, he has his vehicle called the Master Cycle, which also appeared as a downloadable vehicle.

Link returns once again in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this time as an unlockable character which he wears his Breath of the Wild outfit in the Nintendo Switch remake version.

Super Smash Bros. series[]

Link has appeared in every Super Smash Bros game to date as a playable fighter in said series. Link is also available from the start in all games.

Super Smash Bros.[]

Link appears as one of the eight starting characters along with Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran, Yoshi, Kirby, Fox McCloud, and Pikachu. He appears in his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time design. He uses his Master Sword for many of his attacks, as well as his projectiles.

Super Smash Bros. Melee[]

Link returns in the GameCube installment. Being available from the start again, he retains his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time design, albeit upgraded due the GameCube's graphics, his shield now has the ability to block projectiles from other characters. additionally Zelda, her alter-ego Sheik, series villain Ganondorf and his younger self, Young Link appear as playable characters representing the The Legend of Zelda series, In the games event mode he teams up with Zelda to face Ganondorf, in another event match the player as his younger self faces his older self in a one-on-one fight, additionally the player as Marth a fellow sword fighter in the game fights him in a duel.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]

Link returns in the Wii installment as a playable character. Unlike the previous two installments, he appears in his The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess design. Like every other character in the game, Link features a Final Smash in which he traps his opponents in his Triforce symbol force fields, slashing them with his sword several times before dealing with a final blow that almost guarantees a KO. Young Link does not return as a playable character and is instead replaced by his The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks incarnations known as Toon Link.

Link was represented by several stickers: Epona & Link give a boost on hand and foot attacks by 9 to him, Zelda, Ganondorf and Toon Link, Link from The Legend of Zelda give a boost on indirect attacks by 17 to any fighter, Link from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past give a boost on electric resistance by 31 to him, Zelda, Ganondorf and Toon Link, Link from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess give a boost on slash resistance by 27 to him, Zelda, Ganondorf and Toon Link, Midna & Wolf Link give a boost on foot attacks by 26 to him, Zelda, Ganondorf and Toon Link.

In the game's adventure mode, he pulls out the Master Sword while walking through the forest and equips it not long before walking past Yoshi, whom is sleeping on a tree stump. Seconds later, he notices the Halberd appear and drop shadow bugs, which causes Primids to appear. Link and Yoshi then team up and the duo fight their way through the forest before losing the Halberd. Nonetheless, the duo continue chasing it.

Much later, depending on which princess the players saves, if Peach is saved from Petey Piranha early on, Link will attack a shadow clone of Princess Peach and destroy her gun, whom was attempting to turn Mario and Pit into trophies, and with Yoshi, fights and defeats her. However, Mario will notice this and mistake Link and Yoshi for defeating the real Peach, so he gets mad and attacks him. He, along with Pit will then fight him and Yoshi, requiring you to defeat them. If Zelda was saved earlier, an alternate, but similar scenario will play out where a shadow clone of Zelda is created and and tries to turn Link and Yoshi into trophies, but before she can, Mario and Pit stop her, with Pit destroying the gun with an arrow and them subsequently defeating her. Upon seeing this, Link will become similarly enraged and attack them over thinking they killed Zelda, kicking off a battle and requiring them to defeat him and Yoshi. Afterwards, King Dedede appears and snatches the trophies of the fallen duo, but Kirby appears and frees them and Link/Pit sabotage his cart. From that point onwards, the five of them form an alliance and chase Dedede.

The group traverses through an underground cave and find King Dedede's castle empty (due to Bowser and his Koopa Troopas breaking into his castle earlier and knocking him out, as well as stealing the Peach/Zelda trophy). They then find a hole and go through it. After emerging from the hole, the group ambushes Bowser, with Mario attempting to attack him, but he uses the trophy as a shield. Pit then fires an arrow at Bowser, but he barely dodges it (causing the trophy to lose Dedede's badge in the process) before escaping in his Koopa Clown Car, frustrating the heroes.

Later, the five of them chase after the Ancient Minister, attempting to prevent him from using another subspace bomb, with him and Mario running at him as he shoots lasers at them before being taken away by the R.O.B's. The group is forced to escape the area in order to not be sucked into Subspace.

Much later, the five of them assist a group consisting of Marth, Ike, Lucas, the Ice Climbers, and the Pokémon Trainer fight off the forces of the Subspace Army. After the army is defeated, the two groups form an alliance and witness the Halberd (now controlled by Meta Knight) and the Falcon Flyer (consisting of Captain Falcon, Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Samus Aran, Pikachu, Olimar and ROB) land in front of them. All of them then join forces for the final battle against the Subspace Army and board the Halberd and enter Subspace, but Halberd is destroyed by a large gunship commanded by Ganondorf and Bowser. However, it was only used as a distraction as the heroes emerge from the wreckage in smaller ships, enraging the villains, who continue to fire their cannon at them, but the ships manage to dodge all the lasers. While they're distracted, Kirby flies directly through the cannon's weak spot from above on the Dragoon, causing it to be destroyed, forcing the two villains to retreat in defeat as the ships manage to get into Subspace.

The group, now consisting of nearly the entire games roster, prepares to make their last stand against Tabuu, whom was behind all of the events the heroes endured and the main antagonist of the story, as well as who had just defeated both Ganondorf, who had just betrayed Bowser and turned into a trophy, and Master Hand, whom he was serving the whole time. However, when they arrive, Tabuu uses his off waves to turn everyone, including Link, into trophies as soon as they approach him. With everyone seemingly defeated, including Link, Tabuu creates a Maze consisting of worlds the characters traveled through earlier. However, Ness and Luigi are revived by Dedede's badges, and they, in turn, revive Dedede, and they set out to rescue everyone, including Link. If Link and Zelda are rescued, then a cut scene will play where the Hylian Heroes stumble upon Ganondorf's trophy and agree to revive him. Ganondorf is surprised to see Link and Zelda right in front of him, but Link points out the real enemy is Tabuu. Ganondorf, enraged he had been manipulated by him, reluctantly agrees to help his two greatest enemies (and the other heroes) face Tabuu.

After Link and the others reach the end of the Great Maze, Tabuu prepares to use his off-wings again on the heroes, but this time, Sonic the Hedgehog appears and destroys his wings, severely weakening him enough to be defeated by the heroes. Link and the rest of characters are last seen on the edge of a cliff as the world returns to normal.

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U[]

Link returns in the Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Super Smash Bros. for Wii U installment and is largely unchanged from Super Smash Bros. Brawl retaining his The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess design albeit with much brighter colors. Toon Link also returns from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, while Young Link remains absent.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]

Link, along with every playable character in the Super Smash Bros. series to date, returns in the Nintendo Switch installment. Instead of his usual green outfit, it is replaced by his "Champion's Tunic" from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, although his signature green outfit does return as an alternate skin. In addition to these changes, Link is noticeably differently from his previous playable incarnations, including his play style. Additionally, Young Link makes his long-awaited comeback after being absent from the previous two smash games in addition to Toon Link. As such, there are now three different incarnations of Link to choose from. His Final Smash from the previous two games, Triforce Slash, is replaced by an Ancient Bow and arrow to reflect his appearance in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

Link was represented by various spirits: Master Cycle is a legend primary grab type that increases the user's speed. Only can be summoned using cores of Match Ryder, City Tripper, Exitebike and a attack core. Link himself is a fighter spirit that can be obtained by clearing the classic mode with him. Link from the first The Legend of Zelda is a legend primary neutral type that increases the user's power sword attacks. His battle is on the hazardless Find Mii stage against Young Link who have increased powers on melee weapons and attacks, his FS meter charges quickly. Wolf Link & Midna is a legend primary grab type that increases the user's power on dash attacks. Their spirit can be obtained by enhancing the Midna's spirit. Wall-Merged Link is a advanced primary neutral type. His battle is on the Flat Zone X against Mr. Game & Watch with Young Link appearing after the said Mr. Game & Watch were defeated. At 99, the spirit can be enhanced to Link from A Link Between Worlds, an ace spirit with the ability of increasing the user's power on sword attacks. Link from Link's Awakening is a ace primary neutral type, first appearing in the "Return to Koholint" event, his ability makes the user weak to water. His battle is on the Tortimer Island stage against Toon Link with Chain Chomp as a hostile assist trophy.

In the game's Adventure Mode, World of Light, he, along with many of the characters in the game, are present on top of a cliff when Galeem unleashed his beams of light on the fighters. With his shield, he managed to avoid three beams before losing to the fourth one. He, along with the rest of the fighters (excluding Kirby), are captured. Link's puppet can be found in the light realm.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf[]

Wolf Link makes a cameo in Animal Crossing: New Leaf in the Welcome amiibo update alongside Epona, Ganon and Medli. The outfit can be unlocked with the use of the Link, Wolf Link or Princess Zelda amiibo. The villager's Wolf Link personality is smug with high self-esteem, yet strongly values his friends. His birthday is also on the date of the Japanese release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Appearance[]

Link's physical characteristics fluctuate from game to game, though he usually has light-colored hair (ranging from brown to blond to orange), blue eyes, and a medium build. Like all Hyruleans, he has elf-like ears. He typically wears a green tunic and hat. In Breath of the Wild, he is often shown wearing a blue Champion's Tunic and Hylian Trousers. In the manga adaptation of Ocarina of Time and Breath of the Wild, he has his hair pulled back into a knot.

Personality[]

All incarnations of Link share a number of characteristics, such as a sense of bravery and selflessness. Since Link does not have extensive dialogue, clues to his personality come from his actions and other characters' comments about him.

He is protective of Zelda, willing to give his own life for her, and also often helps the everyday people he encounters. He is willing to defeat every monster and villain he encounters if it ensures he saves Hyrule, showing he puts the Kingdom before himself.

He is implied to be somewhat sleepy or lazy since at the beginning of almost every game, he oversleeps, which is a running gag in the series.

Powers and abilities[]

  • Strong durability: Link has shown that he is extremely durable, as he is able to survive deadly situations like being hit by powerful sword blows and getting caught in large explosions.
  • Noble Bloodline: Throughout the ages, whenever Hyrule is threatened by evil forces, a different incarnation of Link will be born to protect it, thanks to the Spirit of the Hero. However, Link has no memory of his previous lives, and each version of Link has their own quirks and attributes.
    • Balanced Heart: Several versions of Link possess a balanced heart that allows him to use the complete Triforce with it splitting apart.
  • Incredible strength: Link appears to have immense strength. In Twilight Princess, he is able to beat the Gorons in sumo wrestling (albeit while wearing Iron Boots), and later proves able to master Ganondorf himself in a sword lock. In Skyward Sword, Link can wield Koloktos' massive sword, and eventually becomes powerful enough to beat Demon King Demise in a duel.
  • Athleticism: Link has shown incredible signs of athletic abilities as seen as he's able perform multiple somersaults. He is also able to quickly attack an enemy while using a backflip when dodging. He's also able to perform a mid-air somersault. He has also show amazing displays of of athletic abilities while swimming. In Breath of the Wild Link's abilities can be further enchanced.
  • Magic: Link can use different magic spells effectively to help him in his quest.
  • Sword fighting: Something all Links have in common is their incredible swordsmanship, unmatched by anyone. They are able to defeat highly skilled swordsmen like Ganondorf in combination with their strength and agility. Link's skill can extend even to large and cumbersome swords. In Breath of the Wild, if he focuses, he's able to see as if time slowed down.
    • Spear fighting: Link has shown incredible combat skills with a spear along with his abilities his sword fighting combat skills. In Breath of the Wild if he focuses, he's able to see as if time slowed down.
    • Hidden Skills: At some point Link the Hero of Time learned these skills then later after becoming the Hero's Spirit he would later soon pass these skills on to his descendant Link the Hero of Twilight.
  • Archery Skills: Something all Links have in common is their incredible archery skills. In Breath of the Wild, if he focuses, he's able to see as if time slowed down while in mid-air when aiming at a target.

Wolf Link[]

In The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Whenever Link enters an area shrouded in Twilight, he transforms from his normal Hylian form into a sacred beast. As a wolf, Link is unable to use items and has lower defenses but gains enhanced senses and the ability to talk to animals. In this form, Midna can ride on his back to assist him in combat and open certain doors. Interestingly, Midna is visible in Wolf Link's shadow even when she is not riding on his back. After obtaining the Master Sword, Link can assume his wolf form voluntarily by touching the Shadow Crystal created by Zant's magic. Link is then able to change between his wolf and Hylian forms at any time as long as no other people can see him transform.

Quotes[]

SHAAAAAAK!
~ Link's war cry in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee.

Trivia[]

  • His tunic and hat are based off Peter Pan.
    • Both characters would ultimately be featured in a video game that also features Sora.
  • According to Shigeru Miyamoto, Link's name comes from the fact that, during development of The Legend of Zelda, he was the link between the past and the future, which was the original setting for the game. Miyamoto has also stated that Link is named after the fact that he connects people together.
  • According to Eiji Aonuma, Link is named after that fact that he links the player to the game.
  • Miyamoto said, in Twilight Princess, Link is 5'8 feet tall
  • Link's lack of dialogue influences multiple other games, such as how The New Kid in South Park: The Stick of Truth and South Park; The Fractured but Whole can't speak as a homage. Byleth in Fire Emblem: Three Houses also doesn't have much dialogue.
