Heroine Overview

I didn't live my life as I did and trained all those years to be replaced by some teenager.
~ Lisa Lisa

Elizabeth Joestar, better known as Lisa Lisa, is a minor character in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part I: Phantom Blood and the tritagonist of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Part II: Battle Tendency.

Lisa Lisa is a Ripple master and mentor to Caesar Zeppeli and Joseph Joestar. Later, it is revealed that she is Joseph's mother, who was rescued from the shipwreck by Erina Pendleton as a baby and adopted by the Hamon master Straizo. Lisa Lisa also appears as the main protagonist of the non-canon spin-off novel, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Rey Infinito.

She was voiced by the late Atsuko Tanaka in Japanese and Wendee Lee in English.

Biography[]

Phantom Blood[]

Lisa Lisa was a baby who was present in the ship which Dio attacked. Due to her mother's death and at Jonathan's request, Erina took her and escaped the ship. She was later given to Straizo to be raised and taught hamon. A few years later Erina's son, George II Joestar. The 2 were married afterward and Lisa Lisa gave birth to a son. Unfortunately, George II was murdered by a zombie disguised as his superior. Lisa Lisa decided to kill the zombie, making her a fugitive. She was hidden away by Speedwagon and was separated from her family.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Battle Tendency[]

Lisa Lisa's first appearance in the part was when Joseph and Caesar decided to rent a gondola to go to Air Suplena Island. At that time she was wearing a mask and upon seeing Joseph, she immediately attacked him. This ended with her placing a mask on Joseph's mouth which forced him to properly breath as long as the mask stays on. She then lead him and Caesar into a tower with oil on the base before pushing them in. The tower itself is a test known as the "Hell Climb Pillar" which Hamon users must climb with Hamon. She continues to monitor her students until they finally climb up. She then introduces them to her colleagues, thus beginning the Hamon lessons.

After Joseph defeats Esidisi, she decides to take a bath thinking her maid, Suzi Q would keep the Red Stone of Aja somewhere safe. Unfortunately, Esidisi's brain was still alive and was controlling Suzi, having used her body to send the red stone off to Swiss. She joins the group to Swiss after Esidisi's brain was destroyed.

In Swiss, she discovered the pillar men's hideout and was planning a route of attack. She was unable to stop Caesar from going on his own and decided to catch up with him later. Upon arriving, Caesar has been killed and despite her attempts to suppress her emotion, she was unable to do so. She and Joseph proceeded to go deeper into the hideout, killing a zombie guard to get pass while doing so. The 2 were able to convince the remaining pillar men to fight them on even ground before she sent Joseph to get the Red Stone of Aja.

Before Joseph's fight against Wamuu, she decided to explain a part of her backstory to her student. She then watched him fight, often making comments regarding it. Eventually she got the chance to fight Kars, and was then stabbed in the back and defeated with ease. Her unconscious body was used by Kars as a pawn until he was defeated.

Lisa Lisa was one of the characters who arrived at Joseph's funeral and was there to witness his return. In the ending, it is revealed that she retired from her job and married a Hollywood screenwriter. She also told Joseph that she is his mother.

Personality[]

Lisa Lisa is like any Ripple master, a dignified and courageous woman, facing the Pillar Men without fear, and confidently confronts any challenge she encounters, especially in regards to fighting someone. Lisa Lisa takes some pride in her fighting ability and tells Joseph that she doesn't need a youngster like him to win. Lisa Lisa is constantly portrayed as a brave woman, being able to bluff Kars into sparing her and Joseph when they are surrounded by vampires without letting any emotion transpire and in the past, immediately killed the zombie who murdered her husband George II, forcing her to hide in Europe.

As the master of Caesar and Joseph, she skillfully employs harsh and apparently life-threatening training for her students and is severe to Joseph, whose antics she doesn't tolerate during his training. Being the de facto leader of the Ripple Users, she is an authoritative leader and reminds everyone that their emotions are secondary to their goal of defeating the Pillar Men. After Caesar's death, Lisa Lisa tries to maintain an insensitive facade, telling Joseph to immediately focus on the fight. However, Joseph points out her loss of composure, upon which she breaks down in tears, illustrating her deep feelings for Caesar as a student and comrade.

Otherwise, Lisa Lisa behaves like a normal and elegant woman. She managed to reknit another life after her battle against the Pillar Men threat, notably marrying again and coming to live in the United States.

Abilities[]

Ripple[]

Lisa Lisa is a Ripple master, trained by Tonpetty's successor, Straizo.

Illustrating her talent and skill, she first appears standing on an oar on a surface of the water, turning it into a high bar on charged pillars of water. It is mentioned during the events of the chariot arc that her Ripple is at least three times more powerful than Joseph's. Her ability for training others results in Caesar and Joseph's rapid growth into Ripple masters in their own rights.

Snake Muffler ( Sunekku Mafurā): Lisa Lisa's primary method of fighting involves a scarf made with the yarn of the Satiporoja beetle (サティポロジアビートルSatiporojia Bītoru), which can conduct the Ripple at 100%. She can channel her Ripple through her scarf to stand upside down, leaving the now rigid scarf the only part of her in contact with the ground. She may also use the sensitivity of the scarf to detect life signs and know the direction of incoming attacks, even when out of sight.

Trivia[]

  • Lisa Lisa's name comes from an American singer with the same name and from an American band called "Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam".
  • Lisa Lisa remarried shortly after moving to America with Suzi Q (now her daughter-in-law) with a famous Hollywood screenwriter. While his name was never revealed, in the non-canon novel, his surname is stated to be Greenberg, and that Lisa Lisa took it after marrying him.
    • In the novel Jorge Joestar, Lisa Lisa's maiden name from before she married George Joestar II is said to be "Elizabeth Straizo", taking after her adopted father. Due to the nature of the novel, it's unknown if this is canon to the actual series.
  • Lisa Lisa's fate after Battle Tendency is currently unknown, though fans do speculate and theorize that she still uses Hamon to slow down her aging even more, to the point where she could still be alive to this day.
