Lloyd Mullaney

Lloyd Mullaney is a fictional character and major protagonist in the British soap opera Coronation Street.

He is portrayed by Craig Charles, who also played Dave Lister on Red Dwarf.

Biography[]

Lloyd Mullaney became employed at Street Cars cab firm in 2005, where he worked with Steve McDonald. The pair of them developed a close friendship and were often used for comic relief. Lloyd became a partner at the company. Lloyd, Steve and switchboard worker Eileen Grimshaw enjoyed having a banter with each other in the cab office.

In 2009 when Steve's new wife Becky was set up for possession of drugs, Lloyd assisted Steve in tracking down the culprit, which was her ex-boyfriend Slug. Slug was under orders of Becky's nemesis DC Hooch, who wanted revenge on Becky. They convinced Slug to stand up to DC Hooch which he did, and DC Hooch backed down when realising he could be exposed for the set up.

In 2010 Lloyd met Cheryl Gray, an abused wife who worked as a stripper. Lloyd managed to get Cheryl and her son Russ to leave her abusive husband Chris Gray, and they went to live with Lloyd at his flat above the cab office. Lloyd truly loved Cheryl and the pair of them made their relationship official. Whilst Chris was still connected to the street due to working at the local builder's yard, Lloyd had to tolerate his presence. When a tram crashed into the street in December 2010, Lloyd saved Chris from the rubble.

In late 2011 Chris was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He later moved into Lloyd and Cheryl's new home at No.13 Coronation Street. Unaware to them, Chris was given the all clear after treatments, but chose to lie that he was dying in an attempt to get Cheryl back. This worked and she began an affair with Chris, and later left Lloyd for him. Lloyd suffered a breakdown and set fire to the sofa and pushed Chris to the ground when he tried to intervene, resulting in Chris bumping his head. In hospital when Chris received a brain scan he was exposed for his lying about his tumour. A disgusted Cheryl left Chris, but Lloyd refused to have her back and she left the street with Russ. Chris was banished from Coronation Street by the locals due to his behaviour. In December 2011 Lloyd sold his share of the taxi firm to Steve and departed the street to go travelling.

In July 2012, Lloyd returned to Weatherfield having lost his savings in a faulty investment and he began working at a new cab firm. He happened upon Steve and the latter invited him back to the cab office, which Lloyd accepted. Lloyd believed he would become a partner again but Steve wasn't interested, causing Lloyd to turn down Steve's offer and they had a falling out. Lloyd acquired a rival cab company and began stealing Steve's clients. Steve's estranged wife Tracy Barlow got a job at the firm to spy on Lloyd and attempted to sabotage his business. Lloyd confronted Steve during a children's sports day and tackled him to the ground, and they were forced to resolve their differences by the headmaster Brian Packham. Lloyd and Steve made amends and Lloyd returned to Street Cars and merged his own cab firm with them.

Lloyd later fell for Steve's college friend Andrea Clayton, and they later entered in a relationship. It turned out that Andrea was married to a man named Neil and that they had a grown up daughter together. Neil returned from working abroad and didn't approve of Andrea leaving him and began stalking the pair. Neil later climbed onto the roof of the Rovers Return and Andrea attempted to retrieve him, causing her to dangle off the edge and nearly fall. A guilty Neil decided to agree to a divorce, and he left the country to work abroad.

In September 2015, Lloyd and Andrea left the street for a new life in New Jersey. The following year Lloyd contacted Steve, revealing that Andrea gave birth to their baby girl.
