~ Lobov to Daz regarding his wish to abandon his post. |
Lobov is a minor character in the manga and anime series, Attack on Titan. He was a former commander of the Garrison who fought during the battle of Trost District. He would after the truth was revealed regarding the threat of the outside world, transfer to the Survey Corps, hoping to save his people within the Walls.
Appearance[]
Lobov was a middle-aged man of average height. He had short smooth dark brown hair that parted to the left side of his head. He had hazel eyes, thin eyebrows, and large wrinkles around his mouth. He also appeared to have gotten a heftier build after the 4 year time skip.
Lobov was initially seen wearing the standard Garrsion uniform with a grey shirt underneath. Once Lobov joined the Survey Corps after the timeskip while in Marley, Lobov wore the standard black Scout Regiment uniform with the Anti-personnel vertical maneuvering equipment strapped around his torso.
Personality[]
Lobov appeared to be an extremely dutiful man who was very devoted to his responsibilities as a soldier. He also expects others to follow these values to a fault, to the point where he threatened to execute Daz after he heard him talking about leaving his post. Despite his strict mindset, Lobov also appeared to be very humble, as he insisted that Jean would refer to him as a recruit instead of his former status of commander when he was still the Garrison. His humble demeanor was also one of the reasons for him switching branches, as he believed that after learning the truth of the outside world that the Garrison weren’t needed anymore, despite the fact that Lobov lived in a high-ranking position, which furthermore illustrates how dutiful he was towards the people inside the Walls.
Story[]
Past[]
Lobov was born on Augustus 11th in an unknown year somewhere inside the Walls. He joined the military when he was old enough and would after his graduation join the Garrison.
He would after some amount of time within his branch reach the position of commander, working under the higher-ranking territory commander, Dot Pixis.
Battle of Trost District arc[]
In the year 850, five years after Wall Maria was lost to the Titans after the Colossal and Armored Titan destroyed the gates of Shiganshina District, the Colossal Titan reappeared and kicked in the outer gate of Trost District, causing Titans to enter the city. The Garrison and Training Corps members would be deployed into the city to fight off the Titans until the civilian evacuation could be completed.
Lobov, being a commander, makes it questionable if he got deployed during the early onset of the battle, or if he strategically worked away from the frontlines.
Hours later, the citizens have successfully evacuated yet the Titans are still wandering around in the city, with more spilling in from the broken gate by the minute. Lobov stands among all other Garrison and Training Corps soldiers, awaiting their orders from Pixis.
Suddenly, Lobov overhears a terrified trainee who plans on leaving the battlefield. This greatly angers Lobov, asking him if he’s truly thinking of abandoning his post. The Trainee, Daz, states that sending them out into the city to fight again is essentially mass suicide. Lobov responds by declaring their duty to humanity, he draws his blade and states that he’s allowed to execute him on the spot if he decides to desert his post. Daz answers by drawing his own blade, tearfully asserting that death by execution is much better than being devoured by a Titan, just before Lobov can do anything drastic, Daz’s fellow Trainee, Marco Bott, attempts to calm him down.
Lobov and Daz’s angry dispute continues for a short while until Dot Pixis appears on top of the Wall and yells for everyone’s attention, causing Lobov and Daz, including all other soldiers present to become immediately quiet.
Pixis lays out the plan how they will seal the gate, by having Eren Yeager transform into a Titan and grab the large boulder present in the district to plug the hole in the gate. Lobov, while confused, is slightly hopeful of the idea that humanity now has some sort of secret weapon. Only for Daz to shout that it’s complete nonsense simply made up as a hopeful lie for the soldiers to stay present and keep on fighting. Many other soldiers agree that Dot Pixis’ plan is false, causing many of them to leave. Lobov notices Daz leaving as well, he once again warns him that deserters will be executed, but Daz shouts in sorrow that he will spend the final days of humanity with his family. As more and more soldiers begin to leave, Pixis declares that he will pardon every single soldier who wishes to leave. Still, he also reminds the troops that by doing so they are leaving the possibility open of their families inevitably being devoured alive by the Titans, while also reminding them about the death of the majority of the population in Wall Maria, together with the idea of a civil war between the humans of Wall Rose and Wall Sina breaking out. Therefore, if they will all die anyway, he asks them to “DIE HERE!!” The situation between Lobov and Daz disapates, as Daz and the deserters decide to stay and rejoin the troops.
It is unknown what Lobov would do during after the operation afterwards, only that he would survive the battle.
Marley arc[]
After the truth surrounding the outside world became known to the public, Lobov transferred to the Survey Corps, believing that the Garrison aren’t as important anymore as they once were. Lobov’s rank would also change from Garrison commander to Survey Corps recruit.
In 853, Eren Yeager abandoned his comrades during the veterans' infiltration mission in Marley. In 854, following Zeke Yeager's plan, Eren committed an attack in the city of Liberio. Lobov, together with his comrades, was part of the attack, presumably having fought. At the end of the battle, Lobov managed to make it in the retreat stolen airship piloted by Onyankopon to get the Survey Corps back to Paradis Island. Lobov stayed close to the zeppelin, shooting towards any Marleyan soldiers that attempted to damage it. The Survey Corps successfully got Eren back, causing all squads to travel out of Liberio's Eldian interment zone and regroup into the airship to depart back to Paradis. Lobov tells Jean Kirschtein that he can go back inside as well, affirming that he will take over the defense of the rear. Jean puts his faith in him, referring to him as “commander”, but Lobov reinstates that he’s just a recruit and that the Garrison has gotten redundant, referring to his past self as a “overpaid geezer”.
Lobov continued to defend the airship up to the point when he saw the final group, Squad Lima, returning to the airship. He then tells them to report that everyone has made it back and that they can start the return to Paradis Island. Lobov remained outside for a short while until he suddenly noticed someone with a gun coming out of an allyway and began running towards him. Lobov quickly aims his gun towards the person, only for him to then realise that the person is a young girl, causing Lobov to hesitate. The girl shoots the gun resulting in a bullet hitting Lobov between his right cheek and eyes, killing him instantly. His lifeless body falls to the ground with his wire still attached to the airship. The young girl, Gabi, would use Lobov’s gear to travel into the inside airship and attempt to kill as many enemy soldiers as she can. She grabs onto Lobov’s corpse and flies towards the airship after pulling the ODM Gear’s trigger, with Falco Grice following her, keeping hold onto Lobov’s waist. They crash into the lower deck of the airship and Gabi eventually lets go of the trigger, causing Lobov’s corpse to crash-land onto the ground near Colt Grice.
Lobov's death is confirmed and reported to Jean by Floch Forster.
