Hero overview

Not fit to be a spy? No. The mistake was endangering that child in the first place. How did I not see that? Making a world where kids don’t need to cry... That was the whole reason... I became a spy in the first place.
~ Loid Forger
I didn't know the real reason the war had started. I thought there wouldn't be a war at all... I hated the enemy without knowing why. I picked up a gun without knowing why. I obeyed my country without knowing why. Ignorance isn't bliss. Ignorance is weakness. Ignorance is a sin.
~ Loid discussing why he wants to stay on top on things between the two nations.
For years afterward... ... I scuttled through life like a rat in the gutter. I'd lost everything I ever cared about. The only things left in my world were the things I despised. And that was reason enough to pick up a gun.
~ Loid reflects on why he joined the army after surviving an air raid attack on his home.

Background[]

Twilight's past is largely a mystery as he has decided to discard about it. It is known that his parents raised him at Luwen, Eastern Westalis and he was orphaned at his early life during a war and at some point in time in his adulthood, he joined the W.I.S.E. and became an undercover agent working for them.

Appearance[]

Loid Forger is a tall man with slicked blonde hair and blue eyes and a slender yet muscular physique. He is noted by many characters as a very handsome man. His usual attire is a green three-piece suit and pants along with a dagger-shaped lapel, red necktie, a pair of black gloves, and shoes.

Personality[]

Twilight is often calm, collective, exceptionally intelligent and discreet when he's on the job. He is very efficient, doing everything to complete his missions such as raising a family, infiltrating terrorist groups, and so on. Despite this, Loid may have shown a caring side by rescuing his own adoptive daughter even at the cost of disclosing his own true identity as a spy or expressing anger after Murdoch Swan humiliated her.

As one of the best spies is Westalis, Loid is exceptionally intelligent, a phenomenal actor and a brilliant polymath. He has had to play a variety of roles over the course of his career, and as a result is highly skilled and knowledgeable in a vast variety of fields. He can virtually become anything or anyone.

He is usually highly perceptive, being able to understand the emotions, intentions, and sometimes history of a person he encounters. The only exceptions are those with sincere feelings for him, as he underestimates Yor's desire for nuptial advancement, frequently mistakes Anya's moods, and is oblivious to Fiona Frost's passionate infatuation with him - although, the latter is mainly since he trained her so well that he can't see her feelings beneath her stoic façade; even so, her repeated attempts to replace Yor as his pseudo-wife in Operation Strix are always believed by him as simply Fiona's own career ambitions.

Due to his life as a spy, he sometimes becomes incapable of actual sincerity, and some of his own emotions, and reasons behind them, become a mystery to him. While most of his outward expressions are logical decisions, he does have admiration for his colleagues, and his family Yor and Anya, even if they were brought together for the sake of the mission.

While he has a strong moral compass and sense of justice - significantly influenced from his horrific childhood trauma during the war - he can occasionally bend his morality, since a lot of his work involves not just deception, but also manipulation; not every person he encounters during an assignment is a villain, but he will find a weakness to exploit all the same. He doesn't feel enjoyment out of it, rather a cold calculation that still suggests at least an adherence to an amoral outlook on occasion.

He normally executes his missions with complete detachment, as he simply emotionlessly undertakes step by step, until completing the mission. However, his unintended bond with Anya as his daughter began to form a sense of real parental love; so much so, that he, while uncommonly, can sabotage the mission by accident as his protectiveness of Anya makes him break his calm demeanor to argue or even attack those who threaten or insult her.

Abilities[]

Loid fighting

Loid's fighting skills.

A renown spy, Twilight's intellect and physical prowess are (almost) unparalleled.

  • Peak Physical Attributes: Twilight has shown peak level of physique. His brute strength is above average to the point he is shown throwing a grown men at a few meters away, destroying a wooden table with a single precise punch, and unplugging a lead pipe to use as melee weapon. Twilight has demonstrated peak durability and reflexes by withstanding and blocking Yor Forger's nimble attacks, surviving a car crash, performing swift parkour maneuvers, and dodging bullets at a relative ease.
  • Genius-Level Intellect: A disciplined spy, his intelligence is undoubtedly his greatest weapon. He can analyze of a perfect strategy to fulfill his goals, decipher the codes for his mission objective hidden in random objects, outsmart his enemies by disguising as them, and even learning many personal information about Edgar's daughter, Karen. His spatial skills are extremely high where he can easily count the total number of enemies in his mission, analyze the hidden examiners at the Eden Academy along with the numerous tests they've subtlety placed, easily identify a fake ID, and tracking down a burglar who blends with the crowd with only his body movements. By interacting with his main target, Donovan, Twilight shows his unfathomable photographic memory, effortlessly learning of Donovan's personality and security guards, the layout of the Eden Academy which is crucial to figure out the security, and remembering the names of 200 penguins by simply skimming through their dietary habits. He was also able to easily identify Yuri Briar's true identity while on the other hand, Yuri still has difficulties to find Loid Forger's true identity as a counterintelligence agent.
  • Eidetic Memory: Even the briefest gaze of text, faces, or anything, Loid is able to recall with perfect clarity at any moment.
  • Skilled Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Twilight is a master of martial arts and has shown to have dispatched numerous groups of enemies all by himself although he can keep up against Yor's excellent combat prowess and immense physical attributes who was alcoholic during the "Spy Wars" play.
  • Expert Marksman: He is particularly skilled in handguns and has easily thrown a lead pipe to knock down a thug precisely.
  • Various Weapons and Gadgetry: He utilize various weapons and gadgetry including a handgun, grenade, binoculars, radio transmitter, and masks for disguise.
  • Honey Pot: Loid is able to seduce almost any woman for a mission, although fails in exceptions like Yor, who is so bashful and innocent that any "acted" seduction simply makes her so embarrassed that she inadvertently reacts with violence.
Spy × Family Code - White movie Loid Forger's piloting skills2

Loid evading shots fired by several firearms of the Military Intelligence.

  • Master of Disguise: He is able to create and don the appearance of anyone, and is able to emulate their mannerisms and speech so perfectly that even the disguise's loved ones would be unable to detect a difference. The only weakness is that those with heightened senses, such as smell or touch, can possibly see passed the deception.
  • Skilled Pilot: He is highly adept at driving a plane, even allowing him to evade every projectiles fired at him from several firearms of the ship of the Military Intelligence during his mission at Frigis.
  • Alcohol Tolerance: Loid's spy training has enabled him to develop a high level of tolerance to alcohol. He can intake immense amounts of it without suffering from its notable effects. Because of this, Yuri's attempt to inebriate Loid with the wine he purchased in order to have him expose any secret he is confining has completely backfired as Yuri ends up getting intoxicated instead.
  • Intimidation: Twilight is capable of instilling great fear into his targets. During his final shot against the Campbells in their tennis match, Carrol Campbell was so intimidated by Loid and his skills that he was frozen with fear as the ball was slammed under him. He is also able to inculcate fear into people with threats and the information he has on them. This was demonstrated when he held Edgar at gunpoint from behind and browbeaten him with the life of his daughter. He has once been able to intimidate Franky with just a single glare after the informant threatened to sell him out to the SSS.

Quotes[]

Hopes of marriage? The joys of an ordinary life? Those joined my I.D. papers in the rubbish bin on the day I became a spy.
~ Loid to himself about his thoughts on marriage.
To endure such a harsh job... for the sake of another, for the sake of something greater than oneself... That isn't something that just anyone would do. I truly admire that.
~ Loid defending Yor after Camilla tried to embarrass her.
I take thee, Yor... for better or for worse... for richer or poorer... in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health... I pledge myself to you.
~ Loid's marriga vows to Yor.
If belittling the feelings of children is a part of Eden Academy's educational philosophy...then I have chosen the wrong school.
~ Loid's respond to Murdoch Swan after he belitted Anya's feelings.
Scars are like medals of valour. Sure, Agent Penguin got hurt, but they're honourable injuries he received in the line of duty.
~ Loid to Anya.
I never expected she would earn a Stella that way. As far as the mission goes, it's an ideal outcome. It's strange though, I can't help but think of the time I foiled that terrorist attack... I feel that same pride today.
~ Loid's reaction after Anya saved a kid from drowning and earned a Stella Star.
It may be arrogant to think that we can understand others at all. What's important is meeting them in the middle, in spite of that. Very little of what my daughter says and does makes any sense to me. But by acknowledging her, even when I don't understand, I can at least create an opportunity for dialogue. Sometimes that works out, and sometimes not. And I imagine, Mr. Chairman... that's why you took the time out of your busy schedule to meet with your son today.
~ Loid to Donovan.
But it brought you closer to Damian, right? Well, that's a good thing, don't you think? Friends are important. Cherish them.
~ Loid to Anya.
But the thing is, Yor... I've become painfully aware of my weaknesses. And when I looked into Wheeler's eyes, I remembered... I live in a world which only the perfect survive.
~ Loid reminds himself of the danger of his job after his fight against Winston, and for the first time he doubts his feelings for Yor.

Trivia[]

  • In the original pitch of the series, Twilight's codename was going to be "Mirage" in order to reflect his mysterious nature. According to Tatsuya Endo, "Twilight" was a placeholder name that ended up sticking.
    • Additionally, it was originally intended for his current alias to be "Oscar". In the development draft, he would also take the job of a magician during the war and make children smile.
  • Loid was based off the character A4 from Tatsuya Endo's previous one-shot, I SPY, with both characters being stoic secret agents who take on different aliases throughout the story. He also shares resemblances to Gath Nigrette, the main protagonist from Endo's one-shot Ishi ni Usubeni, Tetsu ni Hoshi.
  • When choosing his aliases, Loid has the tendency to opt for names that start with an "L" or "R" (which have no distinction in japanese). Examples include "Loid", "Lionel", "Robert", "Roland".
    • His name was originally romanized as "Lloyd" until Chapter 10. Which makes him the second character to undergo a name change after Anya, whose name was originally spelled as "Ania" with an "i".
    • The only current exception for this was in the Campbelldon Tennis Arc, in which he adopted the first name "Twain."
    • During his backstory in the anime, his "Roland Spoofy" identity is changed to "Lorand Spoofy."
  • His Campbelldon Tennis alias "Twain" is a reference to his codename "Twilight". In the original japanese version, his name is "Garesso" (ガレッソ), as a reference to his Japanese codename "Tasogare" (黄昏).
  • Loid and Yor were added to the video game Street Fighter 6 as downloadable costumes for character creator in the game's Spy × Family collaboration.
  • The chair he appears sitting in the cover of Volume 1 is a Grand Confort LC2 Petit Modèle designed by Le Corbusier, which Endo chose as he felt its squarish and refined design was fitting with Loid's rational and collected personality.
    • Underneath the chair, Loid's spy equipment and bullet shells can be seen, which might be a metaphor for how he hides his secret double life as a spy from people beneath his domestic persona.
    • Aditionally, it's worth noting that the Forger household also appears to have a set of Grand Confort chairs and couch in their own living room.
  • Loid is currently the only character in the series that has appeared in more than one volume cover (1 and 10) as well as the first character to not appear sitting in a designer chair, with Volume 10's cover showcasing his child self sitting on a pile of debris.
