Longneck is a major character in the 2024 DreamWorks Animations film The Wild Robot, based on the book series of the same.
He is an old and wise barnacle goose who is the leader of the Island Flock and is one of the few animals that is kind and supportive towards both Roz and her adopted son Brightbill. He offers Brightbill to be part of his flock on the condition that Roz teaches how to fly.
He is voiced by Bill Nighy, who also played Grandsanta in Arthur Christmas and Thomas Jerome Newton in the 2022 The Man Who Fell to Earth .
Biography[]
Longneck was first seen telling Roz to not give up on Brightbill when she took him to the geese and agreed to train him as his successor, holding no sign of hostility to Roz. This will lead her to hire the peregrine falcon Thunderbolt to teach Brightbill how to fly. Just as the geese leave for migration, Brightbill finally gets a hold of flying and departs with the rest including Longneck, who makes him the next leader of the flock, as Roz bids them farewell.
A thunderstorm then threatened the flock, forcing them to shelter at a Universal Dynamics greenhouse, where they braved attacks from the hostile RECO robots. Since Brightbill was no longer scared of the robots, Longneck tells him to lead the rest of the flock to safety and create an opening for them to exit before he sacrificed himself to a bullet aimed at Brightbill to hold off the robots, allowing Brightbill’s efforts to be finally recognized by some of his fellow geese posthumously, while the goose bullies still see him as a freak and simply wish to overthrow him as Flock leader.
