Biography[]

Background[]

Lord Terrance Hood is an experienced UNSC Navy veteran of British nobility. Prior to the year 2530, long before his tenure as Fleet Admiral, Hood was originally deployed aboard the UNSC Spirit of Fire, serving as Captain Cutter's Executive Officer. Later, in the year 2530, he was given command of a light battle cruiser: the UNSC Roman Blue.

In 2531, during the early stages of the Human-Covenant war, Lord and his crew participated in the doomed defense of Arcadia, a human world settled in the Outer Colonies. As human defenses fell to the Covenant onslaught, the Spirit of Fire assisted in evacuating the human population of Arcadia, dropping a log beacon in the process. Hood was later tasked to recover the log buoy from the planet's surface, but was also ordered to avoid direct combat with Covenant forces. However, Hood, enraged by the Covenant's massacre on Arcadia's populace, disobeyed and ordered his crew aboard the UNSC Roman Blue to attack a Covenant heavy cruiser. Heavily outclassed and outgunned by the Covenant's superior firepower, the lone human cruiser eventually retreated. Hood himself expressed guilt and regret over his actions as he was forced to abandon the log and, with it, any hopes of rescue for the UNSC Spirit of Fire.

For his failure in the mission, Hood was reassigned to a lesser support role on another UNSC ship named Burlington, and command of the Roman Blue was given to another captain. By the year 2552, as the war dragged on, Hood became a decorated navy officer who was promoted to Fleet Admiral of the UNSC Naval Command. At some point before his ascension, Hood met with the Master Chief shortly before the Fall of Reach. Afterwards, he expressed interest in learning the fate of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn, as well as searching for potential survivors on Reach.

Battle of Earth[]

In October 2552, after the events of Halo: Combat Evolved, Fleet Admiral Hood convened an awards ceremony aboard the Cairo Station, where he presented medals for the Master Chief, Sergeant Avery Johnson, and the late Captain Jacob Keyes for their heroism in the Battle of Installation 04; the posthumous award for Captain Keyes was given to his daughter, Commander Miranda Keyes. While presiding over the ceremony, they were interrupted by the sudden arrival of a Covenant's fleet near Earth's orbit. Recognizing the fleet's rather unusually small presence compared to the events in Reach, Hood ordered the Master Chief to defend the station from Covenant boarders, while Hood himself assumed command of the station's orbital defenses to stop the Covenant from breaking through and reaching Earth.

Late into the battle, the Covenant, now under the sole leadership of the Prophet of Truth and the Jiralhanae admist the Great Schism, managed to establish a presence in the Kenyan city of Voi. With the Forerunner Dreadnought stationed close by, the Covenant launched excavation efforts to unearth a portal they believe will lead them to the Ark. With Hood's permission, Commander Keyes, along with the Master Chief and the Arbiter, launched a counter-offensive to disable the Covenant's anti-air defenses. After the last Covenant anti-air battery was disabled, Lord Hood led a formation of frigates and Longsword fighters towards the Keyship, launching multiple strikes on the Dreadnought. Despite this, the Forerunner ship withstood the onslaught of MAC rounds and made its escape from Earth through the portal.

Immediately following the Covenant's departure, a Flood-controlled Covenant battlecruiser crash-landed at the edge of Voi, beginning the Flood outbreak on Earth. With the combined arms of the UNSC and the Sangheili-led Shadow of Intent, they successfully contained the Flood from spreading outside of Voi. The city itself, however, was lost to the infestation. The Separatist fleet glassed Voi and its outskirts as an act of quarantine. Afterwards, Hood watched a recording by Cortana recovered during the Flood onslaught, warning him and the others of an overwhelming Flood invasion by the Gravemind. Skeptical of Cortana's words due to her damaged state, Hood proposed to hold ground and fight the Flood of Earth. Rtas 'Vadum rebutted Hood's suggestion, believing it to be an act of suicide. He instead suggested to listen to Cortana's plea and go through the portal, where the AI claimed a solution to the Flood can be found. Hood ultimately relented, allowing the Master Chief and the crews of Forward Unto Dawn to accompany the Sangheili to the Ark. Hood himself would remain on Earth.

The UNSC-Sangheili alliance's expedition into the Ark proved ultimately successful, defeating both the Covenant and the Flood. After the end of the war, Lord Hood conducted a memorial service near the ruined city of Voi, honoring those who lost their lives in the war. Hood remarked to the Arbiter that while he could never forgive the Sangheili for their campaign against humanity, he was nonetheless grateful for their efforts to make peace with humanity and for fighting alongside them against the Covenant. He also expressed grief for the Master Chief's presumed death, who was missing in action after failing to return through the portal before it collapsed. The Arbiter replied to Hood with the words, "Were it so easy".
