~ Lucatiel of Mirrah |
Lucatiel of Mirrah is a character of the video game Dark Souls II. She is a warrior from the land of Mirrah who came to Drangleic to find her brother. She also often helps the Bearer of the Curse in fighting many bosses as a White Phantom.
She is voiced by Sarah Beck Mather.
Biography[]
Lucatiel was born into a peasant family in the land of Mirrah, which was an underprivileged part of society throughout the kingdom. To ensure the well-being of the family, Lucatiel and her brother joined the army. In her youth, Lucatiel took up swordsmanship with her brother, and eventually her skills on the battlefield allowed her to become a knight of the Order.
Although Lucatiel was a skilled warrior, she was no match for her brother. She claims that he was a much better swordsman than her because she was never able to defeat him. At some point, her brother disappeared without a trace. Lucatiel thought he was a victim of an curse of the undead.
She headed towards Drangleic because apparently the cure could be found there. Over time, she became sure that her brother had come here too. Lucatiel later confides in the main character, saying that she feels like a curse is slowly taking over her and her memories, first the oldest ones, are starting to fade away.
During the first meeting, Lucatiel will introduce himself and explain her reason for staying in Drangleic. She will also offer help to the player during the journey.
During the second encounter, Lucatiel will tell the player about her past in Mirrah. She will then remove her mask, revealing her half-hollow face, and give the player an human effigy.
The third time, she tells the player how she is slowly losing memories of her brother. Lucatiel explains that he is a better swordsman than her and confesses that her brother, who is another victim of the undead curse, may be somewhere in Drangleic. She then gives the player a Ring of Steel Protection +1.
On the fourth encounter, when the player finds Lucatiel, she is very confused and embarrassed by the curse and says that she will do anything to get rid of it, even if it means killing us. After exhausting the dialogue, player will be able to summon her for another boss fight and she will move to the next location.
Lucatiel can last be found in a small hut with a bonfire, in front of Aldia's Keep. She will become distraught if the player has not summoned her and kept her wraith alive throughout the three boss fights, and begs the player to remember her name as she may not be able to. Lucatiel will then disappear for the rest of the game. And if the player summoned Lucatiel and kept her wraith alive for three of the four major boss fights in the base game, she will thank the player for keeping her sane and give her armor and sword. This is necessary to unlock one of the achievements.
After meeting her in Aldia's Keep, she will disappear for the rest of the game, and her ultimate fate is left unknown, leaving interpretation by the player.
Trivia[]
- Initially, when the first renders and screenshots of Lucatiel were revealed, many fans believed Lucatiel to be male. Her actual gender wasn't known until her voice was heard in-game.
- Despite her weapon being classified as a Greatsword, Lucatiel wields her weapon like a straight sword.
- Director Yui Tanimura revealed in an interview that Lucatiel was supposed to be a Don Quixote-like character and used to be accompanied by the Bell Keeper of Alken who originally had the role of his Sancho Panza. The idea was scrapped and the original face was repurposed as the iconic mask she now wears.
