“ | YOU COME AT ME AND MY DAUGHTER?! DON'T FORGET! YOU'RE IN MY HOUSE, B**CH! | „ |
~ Lucifer's breakdown as he savagely beats down Adam for almost killing Charlie. |
King Lucifer Morningstar (originally known as Lucifer Magne) is the overarching protagonist of the Hellaverse franchise.
He is the King of Hell, the Sin of Pride, the Leader of the Seven Deadly Sins, and a Fallen Seraph Angel. He spends his life as a recluse who rarely steps outside his home. He is also the estranged husband of Lilith and the father of Charlie Morningstar. He is also Alastor's arch-rival and Adam's arch-nemesis.
He is voiced by Jeremy Jordan, who also portrayed Winn Schott in Supergirl and Varian in Tangled: the Series.
Personality[]
“ | Charlie! You don't understand, Heaven never listens! They didn't listen to me, they won't listen to you. | „ |
~ Lucifer explaining why he doubts Charlie's plan. |
Lucifer is a very frivolous, kind, fun-loving, inventive, charismatic, and theatrical individual, who deeply cares for his ex-wife and daughter. He is a bit overprotective of his daughter, seen during Hell's Greatest Dad, where he gets into a feud with Alastor because he believes that Alastor is trying to take Charlie as his own. Deep down, Lucifer is a genuinely earnest and sweet soul who believes in freedom and doesn't want people to be constricted by strict rules.
However, following his fall for giving humanity free will as well as witnessing Hell's atmosphere, Lucifer grew rather cynical and depressed due to only being able to seeing the worst of it and grew distant from his wife and daughter, becoming a recluse and developed a superiority complex to mask his depression, insecurities and vulnerability, hence his title as the Sin of Pride. He has a very low opinion on sinners and discourages Charlie from trying to redeem them, wanting to protect her from Heaven crushing her dreams like they did with him. But once Charlie soberly asks why he doesn't have faith in her, he's able to set aside his pride and open up to her about his failings, grow closer with her, and get her a meeting with Heaven, showing that even if he isn't totally convinced of her plan, he's willing to support her even if her accomplishments will be a long shot, and slowly regains his old dreamer and idealistic self.
While he's quite neglectful of his duties as the ruler of Hell and dislikes Sinners, Lucifer does somewhat care about the Hellborn denizens, as he was willing to make a deal with Heaven that would spare all Hellborn demons from the exterminations.
When forced into a combat situation (as with Adam), he is a snarky, cheeky type, cajoling his foe with taunts and insults. Should an enemy threaten Charlie, however, he drops this attitude and shows true rage.
Appearance[]
Lucifer is a slender-figured fallen angel who sports a near-resemblance to his daughter; having her white skin with rosy-cheeks, blonde hair with thin light coral streaks on the thicker, paler-blonde highlights, and eyes with light yellow sclera and red pupils.
The difference between the two is that his mouth is full of sharp teeth, his hair is short-cut and has been slicked-back with one tuft sticking out, his pupils are slit like a snake, and his cheeks are somewhat a paler shade of red. In addition, he also sported sharp eyebrows which are black in color, and his eyelids are colored light purple.
Lucifer's white-red clothing is somewhat like a circus ringmaster; he wears a wide-brimmed white top hat with a golden snake and a red apple over golden spikes which resemble a crown, and a red-lined and red-trimmed white popped-collared suit with several golden buttons - his coat worn over a light red-and-white striped dress-shirt with two golden buttons and a small, accessorized black bow-tie.
He also wore a set of heeled black knee-high boots, and black leather gloves which covers the majority of his hands. On his left pinkie, he sports a golden ring which is presumably his wedding ring.
Lucifer carries an apple-topped black cane that matches his hat. As a former angel, he possesses three pairs of white wings with red feathers, which he can extend from his coat. He is shorter than his daughter, Charlie,[1] and his wife, Lilith.
Much like Charlie, when he becomes truly angry, his face becomes demonic in appearance, with fiery eyes and flames shrouding his head.
Biography[]
Backstory[]
Lucifer was born in Heaven created by God. He was an immensely powerful angel and a big dreamer with the desire to create and bring joy and happiness through his dreams for all creation, but his father refused to let him carry them out (perhaps because they were too dangerous for the balance of Good and Evil in Creation). Beginning to question his father, Lucifer began to be seen as a "troublemaker" by everyone else, and they turned their backs on him. In the end, Lucifer was forced to watch as God and the other angels created the universe their way.
When Heaven created earth, from its dust they created the first humans Adam and Lilith, but she left the Garden of Eden when Adam demanded more control. Watching all this happen, Lucifer sneaks out of Heaven and finds her outside to comfort her. Attracted by their respective independence, he and Lilith fell deeply in love and became a couple.
Eventually, Lucifer finally decided to spread his dreams for the Creation on his own without asking the Creator for anything (perhaps he hoped to prove something to Him). He began by giving Adam's new wife Eve, who also was treated unfairly by Adam, the Apple of Knowledge, which gave humanity free will. However, by having this ability, humanity was also given the ability to commit terrible sins, and evil was introduced into all of creation, as well as giving rise to a realm of darkness that would become known as Hell, destroying the balance that Heaven had worked so hard to maintain.
When God found out about this, he threw Lucifer and Lilith into the dark void that he had accidentally created as punishment, where they would reign over the evil that they had released with their recklessness and govern over every evil soul regardless of how minor their evil deed was, although sinners and demons show little to no respect towards their ruler (or any form of respect for that matter), they do fear the power he possesses. During his reign, he separated Hell into seven different rings with him being master of the ring that would be called the Pride ring while handing over control of the other six to a band of secondary powerful demons and together, they became Hell's ruling government known as the Seven Deadly Sins with Lucifer as their leader.
As evil continued to grow on Earth, Heaven grew extremely fearful of Hell's overpopulation and enacted a heartless decision that every year they would send down an army of angels to cull it down, something Lucifer willingly played along with which would endure to the present day.
However feeling completely ashamed over accidentally giving birth to evil, Lucifer fell into a deep depression, never being able to see the good he had given humanity and became a depressed recluse and completely gave up on his will to dream altogether, especially now that he could never return to the place he used to call home. Eventually, he and Lilith started a family when the latter gave birth to a daughter they named Charlotte, or Charlie, but while Lucifer had a loving family life with them, he had a distant relationship with Charlie and Lilith due to his depression; seven years before the start of the main story, the two separated. Lucifer was, however, able to negotiate a "pardon" that would ensure Charlie (and Hellborn demons) was spared the annual purges.
Charlie eventually moved out of her home and grew up with practically nothing but her status which very few people cared about (as shown in the pilot by Katie Killjoy) all the while Lucifer would rarely call her, but it would only be when if he was bored or wants her to do something. Three years previous to the start of the main story during one of the Exterminations, she had found Vaggie (an exorcist who had been attacked and dismembered as punishment for sparing a demon child) horribly wounded out in the alleyway. Believing Vaggie to be a surviving victim of an Exorcist's attack, (technically true) she treated the wounds, putting a bandage on her eye (soon becoming the X-shaped eye-patch she would always wear). The two became close friends and soon began dating. However, Lucifer would not know this until years later[2]
Hazbin Hotel[]
That's Entertainment[]
In the opening song of the pilot, during which Charlie had launched the signal showed that the recent Extermination had come to an end. Carmilla, Zestial, and Zeezi are seen watching from a window along with a red-eyed silhouetted figure that strongly resembles Lucifer.
Overture[]
While Lucifer himself didn't make an actual appearance other than the flashbacks, his actions he did in the past still play colossal and dangerous actions for his realm's living system for the present day as well as the life of his family. A week after the recent Extermination, Lucifer does make an off-screen one when he hears that Adam, now the leader of the Exorcists: the angels in charge of killing sinners (as well as the one who came up with the idea in the first place), wants to meet with him.
However, unwilling to confront his wife's ex-husband again, he instead asks Charlie to go to his place. Unbeknownst to him at the time, Charlie had grown tired of the yearly Exterminations and with one their family's old manors, had decided to convert into a hotel she calls the "Happy Hotel" (later renamed to "HAZBIN Hotel") with the goal of redeeming sinners so they can ascend into Heaven as a more humane way to solve the overpopulation, which was quite obviously seen as a joke by everyone and later by Adam who also admits to her that he loves the Exterminations. Though he isn't seen reacting to this, it is heavily implied that he too is shocked to find out that Adam (secretly afraid of discovering that one of the Exorcists have been killed) decided to move up the next Extermination to 6 months.
Dad Beat Dad[]
5 months later Lucifer, having since become a rubber duck-loving recluse after Lilith and Charlie left him, gets an unexpected call from Charlie (having gone slightly crazy when she realizes that her hotel isn't working) who wants to ask him something, after a rather awkward greeting on the phone, Lucifer quickly learns that the favor in question she wants from him is a meeting with the one in charge of Heaven to show them her ideas. Once he realizes what her daughter wants, Lucifer initially tries to cancel out on it, but Charlie (with Vaggie holding her hand) begs him to try and do it, but when he still says no to that, she at least convinces him to check the hotel out to see why it's a good idea, to which Lucifer excitedly takes it as a form of inviting him over and happily accepts.
After getting himself ready in an hour, Lucifer teleports to the front of the hotel where he swiftly wraps Charlie into a bear-hug before greeting the family cat KeeKee and the twin dragons Razzle & Dazzle he gave Charlie to act as her butlers, but he immediately gets into a rivalry with the hotel's host and longtime overlord Alastor. Fortunately Charlie manages to put it out for a while before properly introducing Vaggie to her dad, which he happily welcomes (while mistaking her name for "Maggie"), and the rest of the residence like the hotel's guests Angel Dust and Sir Pentious and the staff like Husk and Niffty, but seeing the poor-state the hotel's in, Lucifer offers his services to improve the place which swiftly turns into an almost fight when Alastor mocks him due to his insecurities of being a dad, which doesn't fortunately happen when Mimzy, an old friend of Alastor shows up and gets everyone's attention.
With that dispute settled, Charlie gives him an official tour around the Hotel as well as explaining it's goals once she gets that meeting with Heaven, though once she asks his thoughts about it, he can't help but admit that while he loves that she tries to see the best in people, he shows absolute disgust in the demons their family (quite ironically) rule over and views them as a lost cause. This statement he makes is proven immediately true when a gang of literal loan sharks who Mimzy angered start attacking the hotel, which Lucifer tries to use as a point that his daughter's plan being pointless, though once Alastor goes full-demon mode and massacres the loan sharks, Charlie points out that while he can be ruthless he at least shows faith in her and shows sadness over the fact that others (particularly her girlfriend) have faith in her while her own dad doesn't, which leaves him in question.
After Alastor devours the last gang member and sends Mimzy packing, Charlie begs him to answer why he won't get her that meeting, to which he admits it's because Heaven never listens to him and is sure they won't listen to her, but when Charlie tries to tell him he doesn't know that, he reveals it's because he tried it before, hinting that he tried to redeem sinners too before Charlie was born and failed terribly, and after Lilith left he sees his daughter as the one thing left that's worth protecting. When she tries assuring her she doesn't need protecting, Lucifer admits he just doesn't want her dreams to be crushed by them like him, but it then that Charlie reveals that it was the tales about his dreams of creation that made her the happy woman she is today, telling him that she's still willing to save their people no matter what happens, which is enough to convince a happy Lucifer to arrange that meeting for her before disappearing, though he says he won't be with her when it comes but is confident in her regardless.
The Show Must Go On[]
Sadly, Lucifer's warning about the higher-ups in Heaven never listening (mainly out of fear of ending up just like him if they go against the order they have grown fine with) are proven true to Charlie and they refuse to see her visions of redemption for demons being true despite the valid evidence she has, and like every year he is forced to watch as Adam and his Exorcist band come to his kingdom to cull down the population. Unfortunately, when Charlie (and another angel who is genuinely on her side of redemption for demons) called him out for being the monstrous hypocrite that he is and the court unfairly ruled in his favor, Adam made the stupid mistake of targeting the hotel and slaughtering every demon their first, unaware that doing so he broke the promise of never killing any Hellborn demon during the Extermination, and since Charlie is a Hellborn (but it's mainly because he loves his kid) it's all the reason for him to get involved.
Once he witnesses Adam almost chocking his kid to death, Lucifer races to the hotel just in time to sucker-punch Adam away an send him crashing to the ground, while also causing him to lose his grip on Charlie and save his daughter as she lands directly into his arms, landing & putting her on the ground just as a now-angry Adam climbs back up with half his mask broken. Just as Adam wonders if he's gonna fight both members of his ex-wife's new family, a bold Lucifer steps up and clarifies it's only him he's gotta worry about as he confidently confronts Adam for the first time in eons as he pretty-much tags his daughter out of it, but Adam is to furious over his previous action to him and charges at him.
Unfortunately for Adam, Lucifer shows him the absolute embarrassing way on his foolish decision of picking a fight with him as he flies circles around him and pretty much taunts him both for being the terrible husband that he is and that he's an awful excuse for a "righteous" angel, all the while shapeshifting into various creatures and evading every pathetic attack Adam throws at him. However, Lucifer really gets serious when Adam fires a holy laser that splits the entire hotel in-half and causes Charlie to fall down the hole, fortunately Lucifer is able to catch her just before she hits the ground but when Adam tries to strike them in the back, Charlie blocks his punch just before he hits them which causes a now pissed-off Lucifer to send a now-shocked Adam crashing to the ground before going full-demon and giving him a well-deserved no-holds-barred-beatdown, all the while reminding him why he's the "King of Hell".
Though just before he is about to blast Adam with an all-powerful fireball, his daughter stops him from doing so because she thinks he's taken enough of a beatdown, but he can't help but mock him over the fact that he straight-up blown up his pride, which is quite fitting for his sin title. However Adam, now with his mask completely destroyed, has a complete breakdown over being humbled for the first time in his eternity which Lucifer pays no mind to, but is surprised when Niffty stabs him in the back simply because his daughter told her to stab any angel she sees, which she proceeds to do multiple times before it satisfyingly kills him, and with Adam dead and the promise of not killing Hellborns broken because of him, Lucifer then boldly orders his heartbroken and crazy lieutenant Lute to take all the remaining Exorcists back to Heaven, something which she reluctantly does.
With Adam now gone and with the knowledge of Exorcists being killable made real, Lucifer then forces Heaven's higher-ups to ultimately cancel Extermination Day due to his reckless choice, with him even getting more respect from his subjects, but despite their victory, he sees that the total destruction of the hotel (as well as Sir Pentious' sacrifice prior to his arrival) absolutely broke his daughter's heart as she thought she could've done better with her dream and feels like giving up like he did. But to Charlie's surprise Lucifer, with his will to dream now restored, cheers his daughter up by reminding her that that she has changed things for the better and along with Vaggie and the rest encourage her that she can "fulfill her destiny" which is completely enough to restore Charlie's hope, with that settled, Lucifer then proceeds to help his daughter and the others (which is remedial effort for him), Alastor among them much to his annoyance, remake Charlie's hotel bigger and better than ever before.
Abilities[]
- Seraphim Physiology/Nigh-Omnipotence (Formerly): Lucifer was a High-Ranking Angel (Seraphim) and thus had nearly limitless power as they effortfully created Earth, Adam, Lilith, and Eve. However Lucifer gave them Knowledge and Free Will, thus causing Darkness to spread upon the Earth, so they made a decision to throw away the darkness they could take from Earth and throw Lucifer and Lilith into it. The darkness that remained went into Humans which if they spent their lives dong selfish and evil acts, to ensure safety and order: would be thrown into the Dark Dimension accidentally created by Lucifer, which would now be known as Hell. However, Lucifer decided to grant them free will, but then regretted it as they saw what Sinners and Hellborn did with it. However despite losing his Godlike abilities, he was still so powerful that he is at the top of the official rankings even above Charlie and Lilith.
- Angelic/Demonic Magic: Despite being a Fallen Angel, he still was able to use Angelic Magic at amazing levels, it was even confirmed that his Angelic Magic was even stronger than his Demonic Magic as he had so little of it, and as the only being with Angelic Magic he is the most powerful Being that resides in Hell. He has shown that he can still open portals to Heaven, and was also shown making a Golden Ball of Fire in "More Than Anything". However it is possible that he can use Voodoo Magic as he is seen making a duck that can breathe fire and flip, he is also shown in "Hell's Greatest Dad" bringing up three hand puppets that appear alive (but it is also possible that he was just moving them normally) he is also shown demonstrating the use of pyrokinesis (not the Angelic Flame) briefly while sitting on the throne in "Hell's Greatest Dad". In the same episode he is shown producing objects seemingly from nowhere, including an accordion and violin. In "The Show Must Go On", he is shown producing a ball of fire to use as a projectile; seeing as the one time he did so (in the fight with Adam) Charlie stopped him, it is as-yet unknown how powerful this is.
- Dimensional/Hell Manipulation: He was able to control the darkness he was cast into and built an empire easily, and it was thus renamed Hell. We also see in "More Than Anything" he can manipulate small Light Dimensions that he can travel through and control at will (however it is unlike Heaven)
- Divine/Demonic Authority: As a Seraphim/High-Ranking Angel, he had immense power over angels, and people like Adam claim to have ¨Divine Ordainment¨ however he lost this ability when he became a fallen angel, however as the creator and ruler of hell, also being the boss of the Seven Deadly Sins, he gains immense authority over demons, but not many people respect him. This is also shown by how people hate Charlie for being annoying and taking on Lucifer's dreams (A specific example of this is Katie Killjoy in the Pilot as she said she did not care that she was royalty and only wanted her for news content)
- Super Strength: He is shown effortlessly taking out the Chandelier with his Staff before singing "Hell's Greatest Dad". He is also strong enough to injure Adam with his bare fists. Indeed, much of the "battle" between the two at the climax of "The Show Must Go On" consisted of Lucifer slinging insults at Adam, and when Lucifer truly became angry, floored his foe with a single punch.
- Self-Duplication/Replication: He is able to duplicate himself, he demonstrated this in "Hell's Greatest Dad" when the trumpets are seen being blown by copies of him, multiple versions of him are also seen in the restaurant when cooking Alastor with a frying pan.
- Shapeshifting: He can turn into several animals; in episode seven, he is shown transforming into a bird, snake, horse, goat, and octopus, doing so in rapid succession. Each form includes his regular face and hat, and he retains his ability to fly.
- Musical Talent: He is shown during his musical duel with Alastor if he is exceptionally well with playing both the violin and the accordion.
- Creativity and Inventing: Although abruptly and briefly, Lucifer can create and modify inanimate Rubber Ducks with abilities that grant them flight and shoot fire, there were also seen in his flashbacks prior to becoming a king of hell, having wild ideas during Earth’s creation which led to some trouble with the elders of Heaven.
- Hand-to-Hand Combat: While he does not use a weapon, he is a potent fighter, incorporating his shapeshifting abilities and ability to fly into a unique fighting style. His bare fists are capable of badly hurting Adam (who is normally impervious to most weapons) only one punch needed to knock him out of the sky and effectively end the fight.
- Portal Creation: As seen in "Dad Beat Dad", he is able to create portals that goes from one destination to another.
- Soul Manipulation: He is able to manipulate all the souls that reside in Hell, and he allowed free will into the dimension, and can presumably take it away at any time.
- Creation: He is able to create whatever he desires by only using his hands, hence why he has so many rubber ducks in his room. He seems able to create life, much like he did with Razzle and Dazzle.
- Nigh-Immortality: Lucifer is nigh-immortal. Being one of the first creations of God, he has been alive since nearly the beginning of time and life itself, almost before the creation of the Universe.
- High Intellect And Strategic Mind: Despite being goofy and cheerful father, he is quite very strategic and intelligent individual such as he doing some planning on fighting Adam with his powers and fighting skills as well being entertaining of his job as King of Hell.

Trivia[]
- Contrary to popular belief, Lucifer is a complete 180 from most depictions of the Devil, being among the kindest and most truly good people in hell and, despite their initially estranged relationship, truly loves his daughter. By his - and Charlie's account - motive for tempting Eve with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge was to grant free will to humanity, which resulted in the spread of Evil, a failure he has regretted ever since.
- Similarly the live action version may be a hedonist but is only violent when people he cares for are harmed or killed. He even outright says he isn't evil, but the one who punishes evil.
- He has an odd obsession with rubber ducks. Which is possibly a reference to the ugly duckling, where he couldn't fit in. Therefore, he was cast out, and is trying to find his home.
- Another object he seems associated with are apples, having one on both his hat and cane, a reference to how in the past he offered Eve the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, commonly portrayed in pop culture as having been an apple.
- So far, he's the only character who's managed to provoke Alastor to the point of swearing out loud, though the latter also swore twice while fighting Adam, first unprovoked, later out of worry when his cane was destroyed.
- It is unknown why he and Lilith separated, though he still wears what seems to be a wedding ring in episode 5.
- As one of the Seraphim, Lucifer may have very well represented the Virtue of Charity. Considering that he did nothing but seek to give others happiness before his fall, something Charlie embodies as well, it may mean there are only six left.
- As shown during the song "Hell's Greatest Dad", he plays both the accordion and violin, the latter a likely reference to "The Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band.
- His last name, Morningstar is likely based on a passage in Isiah 14 where said title is given to the king of Babylon, the passage later being misinterpreted by scholars as being a reference to the Devil.
- Said last name could also be a reference to the depiction of the Devil in The Sandman. Much like that depiction, the character here has six luminous wings.
- His outfit is similar to that of Willy Wonka, a character whom Vivziepop has compared him to.
- Despite many seeing Satan and the Devil as the same entity, it is confirmed that Satan and Lucifer are entirely different beings in Hellaverse, this could contribute somewhat to how Lucifer's image has often been muddied at best in many stories (the idea of Lucifer and Satan being different entities is also found in some religious works like demonology).
- Satan is the Sin of Wrath and runs the Wrath Ring directly under the Pride Ring.
- Jeremy Jordan stated that he took inspiration from Robin Williams’ portrayal of the Genie from Disney’s Aladdin when playing Lucifer.
- He is left-handed, given how he holds his violin in “Dad Beat Dad”. This is a reference to how, at the time the Bible was written, left-handed people were considered “of the devil”, the original meaning of “sinister” being “left-handed”.
- Furthermore, the golden violin Lucifer wields in the song is a reference to the song "The Devil Went Down To Georgia", in which the Devil challenges a man named Johnny to a fiddle-playing contest, wagering Johnny's soul against the golden fiddle he plays.
