Hero Overview

I'm-a Luigi, number one!
~ Luigi in Mario Kart 64
Mario!
~ Luigi calling out for Mario in Luigi's Mansion
Big bro... it's your choice... Luigi... will follow you... We're all here for you, bro. Always.
~ Luigi's subconscious to Mario in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team

Luigi is the deuteragonist of Nintendo's Super Mario franchise and the titular main protagonist of its spin-off series Luigi's Mansion.

He is the younger, yet taller twin brother of Mario, who constantly lives in the latter's shadow and, by comparison, is unappreciated by many residents of the Mushroom Kingdom. Nevertheless, Luigi is just as heroic as his brother, and frequently aids him on his many adventures, while also going on quests of his own. He is the apparent love interest of Princess Daisy, the ruler of Sarasaland, and the archenemy of King Boo, the evil and vengeful ruler of the Boos, who seeks to destroy Luigi at any cost.

Like Mario, Wario and Waluigi, he was voiced by Charles Martinet throughout the series up, with the exception of the Japan version of Mario Kart 64, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and in the first two Mario Party games, he was voiced by Julien Bardakoff. As of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, he is currently voiced by Kevin Afghani.

Appearance

Luigi is thinner and slightly taller than his brother. As a twin, he wears the same clothes that Mario wears, but generally wears darker blue overalls, although that's not always the case such as in the Mario & Luigi series, while he also wears a green cap with the letter L printed on it and a clover-green long-sleeve shirt and brown shoes. Like Mario, Luigi has brown hair, blue eyes, and has a mustache that's much smoother compared to Mario's.

In the Mario TV series, Luigi wore green overhauls, a blue long-sleeve shirt, and had green eyes and black hair.

In the Anime Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach, Luigi wore blue overalls, with a yellow shirt, and a blue hat with a yellow letter 'L' on it.

Personality

Luigi is usually described as a coward and Mario's shadow. He is always in Mario's shadow and doesn't always get recognized by people easily, usually being referred to as Mario's brother or Green Stache, though despite that, he still has a fanbase as shown in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. While normally timid, clumsy, well-mannered, polite, calm, shy, and sometimes silly, Luigi always manages to summon up the courage to fight his enemies and help his brother out, particularly when he or anyone else is in need. When fighting or confronting his enemies though, Luigi hardly ever shows aggressiveness like Princess Peach and often treats his enemies like Waluigi and Bowser Jr. with kindness. On that note, he is often shown to be kind to anyone who isn't actively antagonizing him and those he cares about. He has a bit of a sibling rivalry with Mario from time to time, but the two have a close bond with each other and will do anything to help one another.

Despite his negative traits, Luigi is sweet, brave, optimistic, smart, cheery, and pure good. It's also hinted that Luigi has a crush on Princess Daisy, as the two are always paired when not with their respective partners.

Biography

Mario Bros.

Mario and Luigi do some plumbing work in New York. It is also Luigi's first appearance.

Super Mario Bros.

While not part of the main story, Luigi is used by the second player in this game's multiplayer mode, and within it, assumes the same plot role and functionality as Mario, travelling through the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Peach from Bowser and his army of Koopa Troopas, who have invaded it.

Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels

Luigi retains his role from the previous game. However, he now must traverse through a new set of difficult levels and avoid new hazards to save Princess Peach from Bowser. He also has lower traction than Mario

Super Mario Bros. 2

Luigi serves as one of 4 playable characters in this game, alongside Mario, Princess Peach and Toad. He is first seen after Mario suddenly wakes up from a dream involving a staircase leading to a mysterious door to an equally mysterious place, during which a voice identifies the world as the dreamland of Subcon, and asks for Mario's help in defeating the villainous frog named Wart, a tyrant who has cursed Subcon and its people, after which he decides to tell Luigi, Toad and Princess Peach about it, who all admit to having the same dream. The group goes on a picnic, but discovers a cave with a long staircase. Through a door at the top, they are transported to Subcon, revealing their dreams to have been real. After defeating Wart, the people of Subcon are freed and everyone celebrates. However, Mario is shown suddenly waking up in his bed afterwards, calling into question if all of this really happened or if it was just part of his own dream.

Super Mario Bros. 3

The plot of this game kicks off with Bowser's seven children (later reconned as his elite henchmen), the Koopalings, invading the Mushroom Kingdom, with each of them going to one of the seven kingdoms within it, stealing the respective king's magic wand and turning them into an animal. Upon hearing this, Peach sends Mario and Luigi to travel to each of the kingdoms, retrieve the wands from them and turn the kings back to normal. Throughout the game, the brothers receive notes and special items from her after rescuing each of the first six kings, but after they rescue the seventh, they receive a note from Bowser instead, boasting that he has kidnapped her imprisoned her within the castle of his own realm, Dark Land. The brothers travel there, enter his castle, defeat Bowser in a battle and free her as a result.

Super Mario World

After the events of Super Mario Bros. 3, Mario and Luigi decide to go on vacation with Princess Peach to a place called Dinosaur Land, a prehistoric-themed world swarming with dinosaurs and other enemies. However, while resting on the beach, Peach is captured by Bowser. When Mario and Luigi wake up, they try to find her and, after hours of searching, come across a giant egg in the forest. It suddenly hatches and out of it comes a young dinosaur named Yoshi, who tells them his dinosaur friends have also been imprisoned in eggs by evil Koopalings. Mario and Luigi soon realize it must be the evil King Bowser and his Koopalings, so together, the 3 of them set out through Dinosaur Land to save Peach and Yoshi's dinosaur friends. To aid him, Yoshi gives Mario a cape as they begin their journey. Mario and Luigi continue to follow Bowser, defeating the Koopalings in the process, and saving Yoshi's friends in the process. They eventually arrive at Bowser's Castle, where they fight him in a final battle. They send Bowser flying into the sky and save Princess Peach, restoring peace to Dinosaur Land.

Super Mario Galaxy

In the main part of the game, Luigi appears in a few specific galaxies for certain missions where he's found a Power Star, but has also gotten himself stuck, so Mario needs to make his way to where Luigi is located so that he can rescue him and retrieve the star that he found. He can also be seen with the Toads on the Comet Observatory between accessing different galaxies taking a break. However, after all 120 Power Stars are found, they can be replayed with Luigi, which is designed to be a little harder since while as usual, Luigi can jump a little higher, his grip to the ground isn't as good, so if you're walking or running and stop, he'll slide to an extent, making certain areas with narrow footing more precarious. The cosmic clones he races on certain levels are also noticeably tougher.

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Luigi isn't involved directly in the game's story, but throughout the game, Luigi will appear at the very beginning of certain missions in some of the galaxies, and if Mario talks to him, he will offer to switch with him and take over finding the Power Star on that mission, something he is shown to be happy and eager to help with, in contrast to his more cowardly behavior in other games.

Super Mario 3D Land

Luigi doesn’t play a major role in the first half of the game, only appearing as an Easter Egg in the fourth letter sent by Peach to Mario. He however has a more important role in the second half of the game, where he’s abducted and imprisoned in the Special Worlds by Dry Bowser to lure Mario. Luigi sends a letter to his twin brother to warn him about what happened. He appears in the castle of the first Special World, where he calls Mario for help. When Dry Bowser is defeated, Luigi thanks Mario for coming to his rescue. He then becomes playable, and helps Mario rescue Peach when Bowser kidnaps her again.

Super Mario 3D World

At the beginning of 3D World, he, along with Luigi, Peach and Blue Toad, are watching fireworks show as they walk along a path leading from the castle until they find a tilted glass pipe. After Mario and Luigi fix it, a green fairy-like Sprixie princess appears and tells them that Bowser has kidnapped and trapped the rest of the Sprixie princesses in jars. However, they then witness him arrive through the pipe and capture her in a jar before escaping through it. Peach is the first one to jump into the pipe after them, with Mario quickly going in after her and the other two following suit. They find themselves in a realm known as "The Sprixie Kingdom" and set off to find the Sprixies. Throughout the game, he can be selected to play with on any of the levels and can use all the usual power-up items, as well as the new Super Bell, which allows them to don a Cat Suit that allows them to utilize new cat-like abilities, namely running faster on all fours, performing unique scratch attacks, and climbing up walls to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. After the heroes save the final Sprixie, Bowser recaptures all seven and heads to his amusement park fortress.

After they make their way through all the amusement park levels, defeat his minions and reach him in his fortress, Bowser uses the Super Bell to transform into a cat form called Meowser. The group proceeds to climb the tallest tower by utilizing the Super Bell and defeat Meowser. The heroes then say goodbye to the freed Sprixies and travel home through the pipe back to the Mushroom Kingdom. After the end credits, the Sprixies build a rocket ship in World 1 so that when they return, they can play extra levels in outer space and collect more Green Stars.

Super Mario Odyssey

Luigi runs the Balloon World mini game, a free mini game released in a free update in February 2018, which is based on either Mario hiding balloons on the map for others to find, or finding balloons other players hid. Luigi's outfit can also be purchased by Mario at the Crazy Cap shop.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder

Luigi appears as a playable character alongside Mario and others. He was present at an event held by Prince Florian when Bowser began terrorizing the Flower Kingdom.

Other Media

Mario & Wario

Luigi appears in Mario & Wario as the goal of a level, he removes the object from the heads of Mario, Peach and Yoshi.

Luigi's Mansion series

Luigi is the titular protagonist in the Luigi's Mansion series. He has to save Mario from the clutches of King Boo, who trapped the former in a painting.

Luigi's Mansion

One day, Luigi receives word that he won a mansion in a contest he did not even enter. Mario decides to check out this new mansion for anything suspicious, but when does not return, Luigi is forced to find the mansion himself and locate his missing brother. Using a map, he arrives at a large rundown building that was supposedly his luxurious mansion and soon discovers the location to be haunted when he is cornered by a ghost. Luckily, he is rescued by Professor E. Gadd, who tries and fails to catch the specter with his Poltigust 3000. They retreat to E. Gadd's laboratory nearby where Luigi explains his situation to the professor and learns that Mario could be in terrible danger without the proper equipment to combat the mansion's ghosts that have escaped from portraits in E. Gadd's Gallery. Luigi is given a Poltigust 3000 of his own to use and a Game Boy Horror to stay in contact with E. Gadd before entering the mansion again to continue his search for Mario.

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon

Luigi is relaxing in his house when he is suddenly startled by Professor E. Gadd contacting him through his television. He is teleported to the professor's bunker in Evershade Valley where E. Gadd informs him the Valley's friendly ghosts have suddenly gone hostile because a malevolent force has shattered the Dark Moon that previously hung in the sky above. Luigi must help reassemble the Dark Moon by gathering its shards before the ghosts start causing havoc outside Evershade Valley.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Mario Party

Super Mario Party Jamboree

Luigi is one of the playable characters in the game and can be unlocked as an ally in Party-Planner Trek. He is found at Rainbow Galleria and the player must win a single puzzle-themed minigame to have him help fight against the board's boss. If the player is already using Luigi in Party-Planner Trek, a doppelgänger of Luigi created by Kamek's magic will fill his role instead. As a Jamboree Buddy, Luigi will make it easier to role big numbers.

Super Smash Bros.

Luigi appears as a playable character in the Super Smash Bros. games, where he is unlockable in every entry except for Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U. In Melee's Adventure Mode, he can be fought instead of Mario if the player reaches the flagpole and gets a number 2 alongside Princess Peach.

In The Subspace Emissary, which is the adventure mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he is seen transformed into a trophy by King Dedede. He later gets a badge pinned to his nose when in trophy form by Dedede, which transforms him back to his normal self, and he, along with Ness and Dedede, go on and save the other fighters turned into trophies by Tabuu and convince Wario to join them.

In World of Light, the single-player story mode of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he is captured by Galeem alongside the other fighters, before getting recaptured by Dharkon and thus must be found on the map and defeated to be unlocked.

Powers and skills

Powers

  • Superhuman Strength: Luigi is able to lift and press objects that are several times his own weight, but not as much as Mario can. The exact upper limit of his strength is great. In Super Mario 64 DS, Luigi can lift King Bob-Omb. Luigi showed an even more impressive feat of strength during the fight with Bowser. Luigi could lift him by the tail, spin him around and then throw him, but not as effectively as Mario. Luigi spins Bowser around faster and farther with more spins.
  • Enhanced Jump: Luigi is extremely good at jumping, leaping at incredible heights and crushing innumerable enemies under him. His feet have great strength and he can jump higher than his brother, making him the best jumper in Mushroom Kingdom.
  • Superhuman Durability: Luigi has significant levels of durability, being able to withstand impacts from falling off great heights or being struck by opponents with superhuman strength.
  • Superhuman Speed: Luigi is shown to be fast enough to run up walls, across bodies of water for brief periods, and even outrun sound (in Super Paper Mario).
  • Superhuman Stamina: Luigi can continue various physical activities for indefinite periods of time.
  • Pyrokinesis: Luigi, in some games, can control fire, just like his brother. His version of fire is often green.
  • Electrokinesis: In games like Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga and Mario Strikers Charged, Luigi can manipulate electricity.
  • Negative Energy: In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Luigi creates a zone of negative energy which can cause various effects such as damaging enemies and putting them into sleep.

Skills

  • Hammer Skills: Like Mario, Luigi can effectively wield a hammer as a weapon.
  • Paranormal Expertise: Luigi gained experience and knowledge to combat and detect paranormal activities, specifically ghosts with the Poltergust.

Trivia

  • In the game Nintendogs, one of the presents your dog finds on a walk is one with a green hat with an L on it inside. This is most likely Luigi's cap.
    • There is also a pink car with Peach in it on Nintendogs.
  • Luigi is found in Multiplayer as the rival in Tetris DS.
  • In the game The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Luigi is seen in a ceramic window in Hyrule Castle.
  • Like Mario, Wario, Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, and Waluigi, he was formerly voiced by Charles Martinet.
  • Luigi appears in RollerCoaster Tycoon films.
  • In Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, when Mario wears the L Emblem badge, his clothes turn into the color scheme of Luigi's. It also happens in Super Mario Odyssey, as there is a Luigi costume for Mario to wear.
  • There are rumors that Luigi is in Super Mario 64, because of the courtyard star statue's text reading "L is Real 2401", although some read it as "Eternal Star". However, these rumors are proven false, as Miyamoto stated in an interview that Luigi was originally meant to be a playable character in the game, where he and Mario would start at separate points in the castle and work their way through, but due to hardware limitations, they were forced to remove Luigi. He did appear in the DS remake as a playable character though, along with Yoshi and Wario.
    • However, on July 25th, 2020, Luigi was found in the game's source code and his model was re-established.
  • In the early games, Luigi originally wore a white cap and overalls with a green shirt and in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2 and the DIC Mario cartoons, Luigi's outfit was changed to look identical to Mario's original color scheme from his debut in Donkey Kong, except with green replacing red, but the shirt and overall colors were later reversed to reflect Mario's current outfit since Super Mario Bros. 3, but with green replacing red.
  • Luigi was created to look like a green recolor of Mario, because of being a palette swap of Mario.
  • The music of Dark Hallways from Luigi's Mansion is considered to be Luigi's theme.
  • Although Charles Martinet is no longer voicing both Luigi, Wario and Mario in games such as Super Mario Bros. Wonder, or WarioWare: Move It!, Martinet's voice will still be used for Luigi and Mario in the remaster of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon through re-used recordings from the original Nintendo 3DS version.
  • Mario, Luigi and Wario are the first three symbolic characters voiced by Kevin Afghani.
  • It’s unknown if Luigi tried to rescue Peach when Bowser captured her for the first time in Super Mario 3D Land.
