~ Luigi to Princess Peach when he became brave after defeating Bowser |
Luigi is the titular tritagonist of Illumination's thirteenth feature film The Super Mario Bros. Movie. He is the younger twin brother of Mario and an ally of Princess Peach, Donkey Kong and Toad.
He is voiced by Charlie Day in English, who also voiced Benny from The LEGO Movie and portrayed Charlie Kelly from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Dale Arbus from Horrible Bosses and Art from Monsters University and Tasuku Hatanaka in Japanese, who also voiced Denki Kaminari from My Hero Academia, Male Shez from Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, and Yuma Tsukumo from Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL.
Physical Appearance[]
Luigi's physical appearance resembles the video game version of himself, but in a different style of 3D animation. He has short brown hair, blue eyes, and a mustache that's much smoother compared to Mario's. He has a green cap with the letter L printed on it, a green long collared shirt with long sleeves, and brown shoes with light brown laces. He also wears white gloves and the same clothes that Mario wears, but generally wears darker blue overalls.
Personality[]
Just like his video game counterpart, Luigi tends to come off as very cowardly for most of the film, such as when he ran away from Dry Bones. He is also extremely hesitant. But during the film's climax, Luigi bravely went out to protect Mario from Bowser's flames with a manhole, proving he can be brave when those he cares about are in danger. Like his brother, he also tends to come off as optimistic, at least when not in dangerous or life-threatening situations, believing along with him that their independent plumbing business would work out, despite some of their family not believing in them (expect their mother, who supports them all the time).
Biography[]
He and his brother Mario are shown to reveal in their plumbing business being a success, but they were also bullied by their former boss, Foreman Spike, to which Mario stood up for him. Luigi showed concern for his brother and asked him why he stood up to someone taller and bigger than him before Mario stated how brothers stick together. Just then, Luigi receives a call requesting their service, much to the brothers' excitement, so they rush off to the location. Arriving at a very lavish house, they look forward to fixing the problem, but along the way, Luigi accidently steps on and breaks the bone belonging to the couples' dog, Francis, greatly angering him. Though they quickly proceed to fix the leak under the sink in the bathroom that they were called to fix, Francis confronts and viciously tries to attack them, which leads to far more damage being caused. At one point during the incident, they manage to save Francis from falling out the window, but the couple is still in shock at the state of their bathroom, presumably leading them to get blamed for it and not paid.
He is then seen at his parents' house having pasta and mushrooms for dinner. After his father unintentionally insults Mario by accusing him of always dragging Luigi down with him, Mario hurtfully storms off to his room while sarcastically thanking him for his support. This causes Luigi, along with the rest of the family to look at the father in disappointment for hurting Mario's feelings. He then visits Mario in his room and brings him a plate of pasta, while reassuring him that he isn't bringing him down. He and his brother then witness an urgent broadcast on TV about a major pipe bursting downtown and flooding the surrounding area, which Mario think is a good chance to prove themselves. He joined his brother in venturing underground to fix it, and although they manage to reach the pipe and fix it, they almost immediately come across a Warp Pipe afterwards and get sucked into it.
After Mario gets sucked into it, he ends up in a cosmic warp hole and reached for Luigi while he was yelling in horror. Mario told Luigi that the two will stick together no matter what, but at a point where the pipe splits in two direction, Luigi gets pulled away from his brother and goes down one route while his brother is pulled in the other one. He subsequently ends up in a graveyard where Dry Bones emerge from the ground and begin chasing Luigi. He runs all the way to an abandoned castle to shut the doors on the rampaging army of Dry Bones. Thinking that he was safe from harm, he fell into trouble as a bunch of Shy Guys kidnap Luigi and bring him to Bowser.
While chained and held against his will, he meets Bowser while Kamek used his magic to keep Luigi frozen in midair while Bowser asks Luigi if he knows anything about Mario and Princess Peach, during which he gets his mustache pulled and part of it even getting torn out even when he gave answers to him. He was then put in a cage as one of Bowser's prisoners, who were all being kept by him to later be used as "sacrifices" for his planned wedding with Princess Peach.
When Mario and Donkey Kong show up in the climax to stop Bowser from marrying Princess Peach and killing his own prisoners, Luigi tries avoiding the lava he was going to be sunk into by climbing the chain attached to the cage, only to lose his grip, resulting in him nearly falling into the lava before Mario (in his flying Tanooki Suit) saves him from certain death.
He gets more screentime when he and Mario end up back in Brooklyn when Mario mistakably used a giant Bullet Bill to make it explode in the space of cosmic warp holes. As he, Donkey Kong, and Princess Peach play a more active role in fighting Bowser so he doesn't get the Super Star, Luigi, as a epic moment, used the lid of a sewage container from the road to protect Mario from getting burned alive from Bowser's weaponized flamethrowing mouth, he and Mario then get the Super Star themselves, and the two charge through the Koopa Army Bowser has sent to eliminate the Mario Bros.. Single-handedly overpowering Bowser's minions, and defeat Bowser himself, destroying his castle in the process. Too tired to continue fighting, Princess Peach then forces him to eat a Mini Mushroom to shrink him and put him in a jar as punishment for his crimes. Meanwhile, the Mario Bros. are hailed as heroes by the people of Brooklyn, including their parents, Spike and Francis.
He and Mario are later revealed to have moved into a house in the Mushroom Kingdom where they work as the town's heroes and plumbers and use the Warp Pipe to travel back to Brooklyn anytime they want.
Powers and Abilities[]
- Normal Form: Luigi, without any enhancements or extra abilities from Power-Ups, possesses the physical attributes and capabilities of the average human, though there is a strong possibility that he is very athletic and inhumanly durable just like his brother.
- Super Star: When Luigi obtained the Super Stars power along with Mario, his physical capabilities were not only drastically increased, but he gained the power of invincibility, though this major boost in power only lasted for a short amount of time.
- Invincibility: With its power, Luigi became completely impervious to any and all attacks, as seen when him and Mario withstood Bowsers attacks effortlessly.
- Superhuman Strength: Luigi's strength was vastly enhanced by the Super Stars power, as seen when he and Mario sent Bowser flying with a single punch from both brothers and then also seen when he flung a Shy Guy with a flick of his finger.
- Superhuman Speed: His speed had also been enhanced far beyond normal human levels, as seen when he and Mario rammed through Bowser's army at high speeds.
