Luis Navarro is the overarching protagonist of the Netflix teen drama series Control Z.
He is a shy, artistic student who had no friends and was bullied on a daily basis by Gerry and his goons, Darío and Ernesto, which came to a boiling point after the hacker indirectly had Luis hospitalized after arranging a fight between him and his bully.
He is portrayed by Luis Curiel.
Biography[]
Background[]
Luis is shown to be a lonely student who often seeks solace through his drawings (mostly of his classmates and teachers), as stated by Sofía, and sort of had a close friendship with Alex, an openly, yet socially distant lesbian student. He had a crush on Gerry, who was completely oblivious of this. They were also sort of friends when, at one point, Luis helped Gerry retrieve a can of soda from a vending machine, something that Gerry was grateful for. One day, Luis showed Alex a drawing he made of her, then one he made of Gerry. Despite some hesitation, Luis showed the drawing to Gerry, after encouragement from Alex, and was amazed by his talent. However, this short-lived friendship would come to an end after Gerry showed it to his parents, resulting in Gerry being put off by a homophobic comment made by his abusive father, who mistakenly assumed his son was gay. The following day, Gerry gave back the drawing to Luis before Darío and Ernesto showed up, making fun of Luis and Gerry does not hesitate to join in and keep on bully him day by day, with Sofía sticking up for Luis whenever he is being intimidated. Angered that Alex was at fault for this, Luis distanced himself from her and drew her as well like the rest of the students.
Season One[]
Luis was being bullied by Gerry and his friends, Darío and Ernesto. Sofía witnessed this when they got in the middle of her locker and easily handled the situation by using her deduction skills to teasingly humiliate the trio and get them to let Luis go. Nevertheless, aside from Sofía, Luis is unable to stand up for himself given his fearful nature. They stalk him again on the parking lot, daring him to fight back, which Luis doesn't. Then, Gerry starts ripping up one of Luis's drawings and that's when Luis snaps but simply pleads for him to stop while Darío and Ernesto hold him back, to which Gerry says Luis is proving his point: that he has to stand up for himself rather than wait for the first person to do so. Gerry then urinates on Luis's backpack before Raúl sends them away and gives Luis some money to buy himself another backpack. During a presentation hosted by the principal to teach the students how to properly use their cellphones, Luis was the last one to show up late (due to the previous situation), with Quintanilla telling him to quickly have a seat as they were about to begin, while being laughed at by some students. However, instead of the topic itself, a video regarding Isabela is shown instead, thus revealing her secret to the entire school and causing her to run out of the auditorium in tears and humiliation. All of the students then leave the auditorium as well, except for Luis. After his mother Martha picks him up, she asks him where his backpack is, but Luis can only respond with silence and Martha intends to complain to Quintanilla, but Luis stops her from doing so, promising to explain everything when they get home.
The following day, after Gerry, Natalia, Raúl (the trio having partook in revealing Isabela's secret) and Pablo's secrets are all leaked at Isabela's request to get back at them, Luis is present in the Biology class when these incidents incite a fight between them and Javier, the new kid who enrolled mid-year to the school (and tries to break them up), which results in all of them being summoned to Quintanilla's office to sort out their issues, including Sofía who got herself sent there deliberately to investigate more. Luis is one of the few students, alongside Alex, Rosita, María, Darío and Ernesto who did not get in the middle of the fight and were not punished for this, although the duo still mocked Isabela. Later on, Gerry, Darío and Ernesto bully Luis again when he accidentally bumps into Gerry and Ernesto pushes him against a wall. Gerry starts poking fun at Luis after Gerry's secret (that he watches gay porn) is leaked (calls him a "f--") and criticizing him for not doing his part in standing up for himself the more he tries to encourage him into doing so, then leading to Gerry spitting on Luis's face. When he notices Martha complaining to Quintanilla about the unfair mistreatment his son has been receiving, Luis, fed up with these injustices and in a bid to stop the trio from bullying him ever again, suddenly interjects and falsely admits to being the hacker to the shocked student body.
However, Luis made a big mistake in doing this: Gerry, believing this confession to be true, wishes for nothing more than getting revenge on his tormented classmate, but Darío and Ernesto insist he is not worth the trouble anymore because he got expelled. Overhearing them, Alex defends Luis by blaming Gerry for pushing him so far at that point. Gerry snaps by snathcing her cellphone, but Javier comes to her defense and gives it back to her. He later spots them forcing Pablo to drive them over to Luis's house to presumably beat him up and informs Sofía, who is unable to pick up her phone after Susana caught her texting the hacker, hinting what Luis did, and confiscated it. Nevertheless, Sofía manages to get his address, but Luis isn't there. After catching up to Luis walking his dog, Sofía tells him she knows that he lied about being the hacker and not to let some bullies hold him back, before they are spotted by Gerry, Darío and Ernesto who are in hot pursuit of the duo until at the last minute Javier saves them by crashing his car, buying Luis some time to escape and forcing the trio to retreat back to Pablo's car when a police officer who is friends with Luis approaches them. Still, the situation is worsened when the hacker, pretending to be Luis, arranges a fight between him and Gerry. When Quintanilla finds out, he locks Gerry up until everyone is sent home. While this is happening, the students are gathered outside to watch the fight, with Luis showing up and provoking them (including those with their secrets revealed), due to the hacker sending him lines for him to speak. As Gerry repeatedly pleads to be let out, Alex inexplicably releases him (on the hacker's orders so her secret won't be leaked) and the fight is resumed. Luis is quickly overwhelmed by Gerry, whom Pablo and Raúl attempt to stop, to no avail as they are held back by Darío and Ernesto. Sofía and Javier try to escape with Luis on Javier's car, but are foiled as Gerry smashes the window and drags Luis out. Luis vainly tries to run for his life until Gerry catches up to him and punches him hardly enough for Luis to fall and hit the pavement, much to everyone's shock, resulting in Luis being hospitalized. Furious about this, Luis's mother understandably blames Quintanilla for the situation and Gerry is expelled for almost murdering his tormented classmate, despite his father's objections that Gerry did nothing wrong, arguing that it was Luis who started the fight, thus refusing to acknowledge the fact that an innocent student could've been killed. He and Pablo blame Dario and Ernesto for Gerry's behaviour, although the latters take their friend's side, arguing that the hard punch didn't happen until the end. Raúl and Pablo disagree. Sofía then finds a video Luis recorded for his mother, explaining in tears the truth about why he lied about being the hacker as he didn't know what else to do. She uploads it so everyone can see it.
For the rest of the season, Luis remains at the hospital lying in a comatose state, with Martha by his side. Sofía starts visiting Luis frequently to check on him, as does Gerry, who feels genuinely remorseful for his actions. Initially wary of him, Martha eventually gets used to his presence and allows him to keep visiting his son. Sofía and Gerry cross paths with each other at the hospital, but when Gerry states that the will kill the hacker himself when their identity is revealed, she calls him out for his hypocrisy in not learning anything of his mistakes before walking out. During the NONA party, Gerry again shows up to visit Luis, who is still unconscious, and tragically died from the sustained injuries, leaving Gerry saddened and silently apologizing to Martha before leaving. Out of guilt, Gerry contemplates on suicide by shooting himself, but quickly changes his mind after being tipped off by Darío about Raúl, who had confessed to being the hacker to Sofía. Fueled with grief and anger to avenge his former bullying victim, Gerry takes the gun and goes to confront Raúl, blaming him for Luis's death and demanding an explanation for his actions, while Sofía and Javier try to talk him down. However, proud of what he has done, Raúl instead spills the beans about Luis having a crush on Gerry. Feeling provoked about this, Gerry tries to shoot Raúl, but instead shoots Javier trying to intervene, much to his and the shock of Sofía and the other students. Thus, with Luis now dead, he was unable to be informed about Raúl's exposure as the hacker, the other person indirectly responsible for his death.
Season Two[]
Despite his death, Luis played a pivotal role for the second season as it had a major impact for the entire National School. Gerry has been on the run from the police after accidentally shooting Javier. He hides in a motel where he is found by Raúl who convinces him to hide at his place. During a ceremony hosted by Quintanilla to honor his memory, another hacker known as The Avenger launches a threatening message to the students, demanding Gerry's surrender and warning them "You can't bury the past". So, this Avenger starts terrorizing each and one of the students into meeting their demands in order to avenge Luis's death.
However, most of the students, particularly Rosita, don't seem to be concerned about this and try to move on with their lives, save for obviously Sofía who stops at nothing to investigate the culprit. Even during Quintanilla's farewell party, after falling victim to the Avenger, he lashed out at the students for refusing to acknoweldge the hard work he has done so far to keep the school afloat and that he only wanted to keep Luis safe. Sofía is wrongfully accused by Pablo for being an accomplice to Raúl in harboring Gerry, turning most of the student body against her for still sticking up for him, including the disappointed Alex, who was feeling guilty for Luis's death as she had previously freed Gerry, albeit on the hacker's orders to keep her secret safe. Gerry, emotionally affected by Luis's death and regretting his past bullying (the origins of their feud shown above), starts changing for the good, first visiting Luis's grave and leaving behind his dog tags as a way to honor him and apologize for his previous behaviour, then having a heart-to-heart conversation with Luis's mother to inform her that he is turning himself in. However, before he can do so, The Avenger, revealed to be Alex threatens him into jumping off the roof as a way to pay for what he did to Luis (after most of the student body choose through a poll that he deserves death), as she wanted everyone to feel guilty as she was for Luis's death, angered at their injustice after they did nothing about it. Sofía and Javier arrive in time to stop Gerry from jumping and Sofía manages to convince Alex to abandon her revenge plans. The aftermath of this and Gerry's fate, however, is left in the air as a fight erupts between Sofía, Javier, Raúl, María, Claudia and Susana over a money bag stolen from Raúl (which María and Claudia needed to save Natalia's life), ending with Susana falling off (or someone pushing her) to her apparent death.
Season Three[]
Luis does not appear in this season due to him being long dead, but is mentioned several times by Gerry, who had turned himself in to the police and spends his days at a reformatory to fulfill his sentence. Gerry makes friends with Bernardo, a harmless inmate who is bullied by ruthless ones, which makes him relive his past as a bully towards Luis and how all of this led to him reaching his breaking point, as Bernardo is also unable to stand up for himself and has to endure all of the mistreatment he's receiving. However, this time Gerry saves him from the bullies through a distraction. To repay him, Bernardo saves him on two ocassions: the first one, is when the hacker spray-paints some walls exposing his homosexuality, which Bernardo quickly throws paint at so the other inmates won't make fun of Gerry, and another is when they are being inspected; coincidentally Raúl calls Gerry's phone for him to assist the group in dealing with the return of @allyoursecrets. Bernardo hides it and frames one of the inmates for the phone. Later on, after the hacker makes Sofía expose all of her friends' secrets, including Gerry's, he is viciously attacked and injured by the inmates when he proudly admits to being gay. Then, the other inmates force Bernardo assist in the fight, a moment in which Gerry imagines that he turns into Luis doing so, which symbolizes his 'revenge' against him. Gerry is released from the reformatory but doesn't intend to return to his parents, leaving him homeless. As a last minute decision, Luis' mother decides to adopt him and lets him sleep in her son's old bedroom, which he happily accepts.
