Lysander Gryphonheart or King Lysander is the main protagonist from Heroes of Might and Magic IV, The True Blade campaign. He was the eldest of the three children of Nicolas Gryphonheart and Iduna, the commander and general of the armies of Erathia, and later the king of the kingdom of Palaedra in the world of Axeoth.

Personality[]

Lysander had a typical military personality. He was strict, cold, tough and decisive, even in peacetime he never abandoned what he had learned in the army and was constantly prepared for any serious or dangerous situation. He was different from most knights and nobles. He was not arrogant or greedy, he strictly adhered to some of the principles of chivalry, but he did not want to be fanatical and had a healthy skepticism within him. What made him very different from other knights and nobles was that he had an extremely strong sense of justice and willpower, and he hated necromancers. He loved life, respected the lives of others, and had a deep hatred for injustice, lies, manipulation, treasons and unnecessary death. His hatred for necromancers was the greatest, as he believed they only caused death everywhere, leaving nothing behind them but the undead, suffering, endless pain, and he lost his family because of them.

Powers and abilities[]

Even at a young age, Lysander proved to both the kingdom of Erathia and his enemies that he was a strong, talented, smart, and very persistent man. By the end of his quest, Lysander had become a brutally strong knight, capable of practically single-handedly destroying groups or hordes of up to several hundred people, and with the real Gryphonheart Blade, almost no one stood a chance against him. He was extremely persistent, his strength and stamina were far above average, and he proved on many occasions that he could single-handedly destroy even dangerous monsters attacking in large numbers. In addition to his excellent physical strength, Lysander was a master strategist and an intelligent man. In all his wars and battles, he carried out successful operations, tactics, and maneuvers, perfectly knowing how battles work, how to properly fend off aggressive attacks, and how to test the enemy's willpower. In the war against Worton, he also tried to use his wits, intelligence, and knowledge of the enemy, so that he did not exist for the worst moment in his battles, as he almost always fought with unprecedented preparedness, and without exception, he took his opponents seriously.

Quotes[]

Lysander: Because I don't believe he is a Gryphonheart.
Milton: He drew the Gryphonheart Blade!
Lysander: Yes. There is something about Worton that doesn't seem right. For instance, he says he got the Gryphonheart Blade from the King's Swordbearer who brought it here from Erathia, but where is this Swordbearer? If Worton were truly a Gryphonheart, wouldn't he have presented this Swordbearer as evidence too?
Milton: What if you're wrong, my lord?
Lysander: I'm not, Milton. I know it!
~ Lysander and Milton discussing if Worton is a Gryphonheart.
Milton: You're just going to leave them alone?
Lysander: Oh, believe me, if they're foolish enough to march an army against me, I'll teach them a lesson! I just can't touch their towns. Not yet!
~ Milton and Lysander about the nobles of Palaedra.
What kind of guard are you, Proetho, sitting around here eating and drinking all the time?
~ Lysander disgusted at Proetho's gluttony.
Messenger: I represent the barons of the Wheel. Until now, we thought Palaedra had agreed to leave us alone. Now you trespass on our land! We demand that you turn back immediately and never return!
Lysander: Take these words back to the barons of the Wheel. I am Lysander, Lord of Palaedra. I have no interest in the Wheel and no interest in their land, but neither will I leave. I have come here on a quest that I must complete. I give you my word of honor that I will pass through peacefully and leave as soon as my task is complete.
Messenger: That is unacceptable! Do you expect me to take the word of every man who enters our land with an army?
Lysander: I do not ask you to take every man's word, just mine! I'm trying to avoid a war here.
Messenger: Then you never should have stepped foot on Wheel soil! Go back, if you truly want to avoid a war!
Lysander: I cannot do that!
Messenger: Then there is nothing else to say, is there? You will regret the day you crossed the Wheel, Lord Lysander. Soon, Palaedra will be looking for a new king! (rides away)
Lysander: Is there no reasonable person in all the Wheel?
Adamus: Remember, we all come from the same world, the same country even. Their homes were taken away from them, they have lost family members to war and apocalypse. Their behavior may not be sensible, but it is understandable at least.
Lysander: Either way, blood is going to be spilled when it doesn't have to.
~ Lysander's meeting with representatives of the Wheel.
Of course, it makes sense now! The Swordbearer's son! Worton didn't draw the Gryphonheart Blade. He drew a fake!
~ Lysander concluding that Worton drew a false Gryphonheart Blade.
I promise you, that when the time comes, I will do my best to spare your son's life. People such as yourselves should never feel the loss of two sons!
~ Lysander promising Kentaine and Desette to not kill Worton, their son.
Worton's power has been crushed. He's running scared! I cannot leave him out there or Palaedra will never be safe. (to Kentaine and Desette) Nor can I leave him to some over-zealous knight who might bring his head back to me on a lance. Worton must face proper justice!
~ Lysander deciding to capture Worton.
Milton: I am thinking about retiring, my lord.
Lysander: You're still young, Milton. Why?
Milton: I'm not so young anymore. Being your squire has been the greatest honor a man could have, but I feel like settling down for a while, maybe having a child or two.
Lysander: Having you as my squire has been my greatest honor, Milton. But, I can't allow you to leave my service. I need you too much! I am in need of a new seneschal, Milton. My former one turned out to be loyal to Worton, so I need someone I can trust. Of course, it will require thankless hours of hard work. You'll have to deal with a lot of people, I am sure. One of the drawbacks of the position is that you'll have to talk to a lot of pretty women, including the new head of my kitchen, Porsha. Oh, and I'll probably never allow you to leave the city limits of Paledon either. Are you daring enough to accept such a position?
Milton: You told a joke, my lord?
Lysander: Contrary to what people may believe, I am not entirely without humor, Milton. So, will you be my Seneschal?
Milton: Yes. It would be my honor!
~ Milton and Lysander about the former's future.
Lysander: Come out, Sir Worton! There is nowhere else to run. Come out, and I'll give you my word of honor you'll be treated fairly!
Worton: Ha! You'll lock me away for good!
Lysander: Only if the courts find you guilty!
Worton: And they will! Thanks to my own mother and father, everyone knows I'm not a Gryphonheart. No court will find me innocent!
Lysander: That is probably true. But you can at least show some courage for once and step forward to accept your punishment. Many innocent people have died because of you!
Worton: No! I won't rot in your jail or dangle from the end of a rope! I have another way.
Lysander: And what would that be?
~ Lysander demanding Worton to surrender.
My brothers and sisters are still out there somewhere, Milton. I wonder if they know what a dangerous name they bear.
~ Lysander thinking of his siblings.

Trivia[]

  • Lysander was 6'2 tall and 225 lbs. Originally, he had black hair and brown eyes, but this was changed to brown hair and green eyes.
  • Lysander was one of the very few people who knew about the Reckoning before it happened and what he needed to do in advance to save as many people as possible.
  • Ironically and somewhat humorously that he became Queen Catherine Ironfist's loyal soldier and champion, with neither of them knowing that she was his half-sister and the same person as their father.
  • Ironically, Lysander fought the battles he had gained the most experience in before the Reckoning against a barbarian tyrant and hated necromancers for what they had done to his family, while in Axeoth one of his brothers became the unifier of the barbarian clans, and the other one became one of the greatest and wisest necromancers, saving them and the world from the plans of Kalibarr and the God of Death.
  • The story of Lysander and the True Gryphonheart Blade bears many similarities to the legend of King Arthur and the Excalibur.
