The Military Assistance Command, Vietnam - Studies and Observations Group, known as the MACV-SOG and SOG, are a playable faction in Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.

It's a covert joint task force assigned to perform multiple operations during the Vietnam War, and participated in some of the most important events during the conflict. In the campaign, the SOG partake in investigating secret Soviet activity in Laos, Quảng Trị and Khammouane.

History[]

Formation[]

The S.O.G. was formed on January 24th, 1964 by the Joint Chiefs of Staff as a covert joint task force to perform numerous operations during the Vietnam War.

Black Ops[]

By 1968, Washington sends Mason to Vietnam to join Frank Woods' SOG team to investigate the Soviet's covert activity in Vietnam. In Khe Sanh, Mason and his handler Jason Hudson are briefed by Woods on the SOG itself before the base is attacked by the NVA. After helping the Marines defend Khe Sanh, Woods' SOG team travels to Hue City to extract a defector from the MACV compound. During the mission, Mason's programming causes him to see a hallucination of Viktor Reznov and believing him to be the defector (while the real defector was killed beforehand). Despite this, Mason obtains the dossier and the team extract after calling in a bombing run on the city. After the operation, Mason believed Reznov was still alive, even imagining him joining Woods' SOG team onward.

In February, the SOG continue investigating Soviet's presence, uncovering Lev Kravchenko's experiments with the chemical weapon Nova 6 and searching for a cargo plane potentially containing Nova 6 canisters. The team discover American weapons inside crates before being attacked by the Russians and attempt to defend the area, but are captured by Nikita Dragovich and Kravchenko. Enduring torture and interrogation from the Viet Cong and the Spetsnaz Operative, Mason and Woods escape, break out other American soldiers and confront Kravcheno. During the confrontation, Woods and Kravchenko seemingly perish while Mason imagines Reznov telling him to hunt down Friedrich Steiner.

Black Ops Cold War[]

In Black Ops Cold War, the MACV-SOG appear as the main playable faction in "Fracture Jaw", a flashback mission involving Bell, Russell Adler and Lawrence Sims to gather intel on Soviet activity in Vietnam. It's later revealed that Bell never participated in the CIA-SOG task force operation, with the memories being implanted by Adler and MI6 agent Helen Park to hunt down Perseus.

Trivia[]

Joseph Bowman is the multiplayer announcer for the SOG.
While not appearing in Black Ops II, Mike Harper has a SOG symbol on his vest, which was later revealed to be a placeholder by the developers.
