MIST, short for ''Modulated Integrated Source Template'', is a Cloud Intelligence (C.I.) developed from the code of David Kim and Laurie Lowell, following Caspian Keyes' discovery of a cure for the flaw. Therefore, in a sense, she is David Kim's daughter and the sister of Maddie Kim.
MIST originally appeared as a floating blue diamond. After requesting a physical form, Maddie created one for her using a rice cooker, adding four spider-like legs and a tablet for a face. Later, MIST evolved into a more human appearance, resembling a teenage girl with waist-length blue hair and matching eyes. She wore a sleeveless white shirt and gray pants.
MIST is generally helpful and polite, though she can be stubborn at times. Initially lacking a deep understanding of humanity, she gradually gained more insight into human behavior during the years she spent helping Maddie raise her son.
Biography[]
After a conversation with Maddie Kim, Caspian Keyes gets a new idea for developing the cure based on her insights about other people. He uses code samples from Maddie's father, David Kim, and Laurie Lowell, and successfully cracks the Integrity flaw.
Once the cure is developed, Caspian informs Maddie, who joins him, Julius Pope, Anssi, and a guard to apply it to her father. The cure is successful, but David's source code is deleted when Pope and the others betray the teenagers, locking them in a room while they take the cure to Stephen Holstrom's cryogenically preserved brain. After uploading and curing Holstrom, he orders Caspian and Maddie to be killed as he inspects the cure. However, the cure reaches out to Maddie and Caspian, freeing them. They manage to reclaim the cure and flee with Cary Duvall's help. As they fly to Washington, D.C., Maddie communicates with the cure and is shocked to discover that it identifies itself as her sister. Disturbed, Maddie struggles with this revelation while Caspian tries to theorize its origin. Comparing it to a tumor, Maddie wants to destroy it, but Caspian stops her, knowing they can't make another cure.
